The front porch was a favorite spot, watching boats and goings on at the marina, and enjoying the natural AC from the ocean. The hotel was quiet, ice and water plentiful, and delicious muffins for breakfast. The staff was helpful and friendly. We had connecting rooms with a shared private bath, and the only dings I would give are for the condition of the sinks and shower. Each bedroom had a small corner sink which had some drainage issues, and by the looks of accumulated patches, the shower and sinks have been fixed MANY times. All in all would highly recommend - we had an incredibly relaxing weekend at a beautiful spot.

However, we were put in the annex, one of the guest houses on the property (no view and smaller rooms). We got a free breakfast and a bottle of wine for the mistake. It was a bummer but we don’t want to give a bad review. If you booked a specific room you might want to confirm before the trip as it appears some online reservation info was lost.

We called the very next morning after booking at night and it took 5 calls, three hours to get anyone and then Expedia denied the booking or help, even though we have 5 emails from Expedia. And the Hotel then called after we booked a 2nd hotel to say they did in fact have AC! Refund our money as you are required to do, either by your mistake or the trip insurance!

• Craig (8/5): CC and MC Visit - Very quaint and original to early 1900’s Inns. The look was nostalgic and views were beautiful from a wrap-around front porch with plenty of seating. Breakfast time could be extended slightly and more variety of snacks. It could use mirrors in the room and more comfortable mattress. Overall we enjoyed the stay. The staff was very friendly and accommodating to our needs.

• Stacey (6/5): - The Inn is classic and very pretty on outside. Inside is very basic- we had a full bed, a little sitting area with a round table, and then a bathroom. The shower was extremely small- barely able to move. The windows were missing screens - so unable to open all but 2. There’s no AC in the rooms- extremely hot. If all windows were able to open it wouldn’t have been as bad. Staff was very nice. While they couldn’t give us a late check out they did allow us to use the upstairs shared bathroom to shower off when we returned from the beach at night. It’s not luxurious, but the price is one of the best on island. If you’re willing to not have an AC and no pool then you should stay here. The location is in New Harbor- not the center of town, but close to several really great restaurants. The Oar, Dead Eye Dicks, Shoals, Payne’s- breakfast.

Slightly annoying the windows wouldn’t stay up with no air conditioning (some windows did have wooden props to hold them up but not all) overall I was able to book a room on the 4th of July for the day of and it was a nice quiet place and we could see fireworks right outside our window.

Shared bathrooms are still a thing?! - Really don’t know where to start, but shame on me maybe for not reading the amenities and overall info more carefully. 1 or 2 shared toilets with the entire floor, and 1 shared shower. Whole place is very dated. How it has a 7.2 rating is perplexing. No A/C, walls and ceiling are beyond paper thin, beds just uncomfortable, staff just seems indifferent overall.

• Linford (4/5): - My wife and I travel a lot and are generally not picky. But this was disappointing. As my wife told the front desk employee, we paid a luxury price for a youth hostel experience. The walls are paper thin (thanks, dude coughing two feet away from our head across the wall all night), the entire house is super noisy (stairs, doors, etc.), the quiet hours are not enforced (so many loud drunk people coming in at 1-2 am), the bathroom on the 2nd floor was shared by 4-5 rooms and was nasty -- the shower especially, my wife had no hot water for her shower in the early evening (!!), the room was very small and the bed surely not a queen as advertised, no AC, and just a rundown joint in general. To top it off, when I reported that the ONLY outlet in the room didn’t work, she was like, oh, that always happens, here I can fix it. And came up, pulled the bed from the wall, and wiggled the adapter until the lights came on. I was like: uh, I’m an electrician, and that is a super fire hazard! She shrugged, but I insisted she get an extension cord so we could plug in to a safe outlet. I can't believe we paid over $300 per night for this hole. The only positives are: location and access to other New Harbor establishments; and the $15 buffet you have access to 1.5 miles away at the 1661 Inn (which, by the way, feels much more like a "real" hotel -- actually a nice place to stay and eat). I’d look elsewhere unless you like youth hostels and fire hazards.

• Verified traveler (10/5): Great place to stay! - Great location, the staff was great, overall very convenient and accommodating. The rooms are very basic but exactly what you need. Will definitely be staying here again!
• Gary (10/5): - Based on some of the other reviews of this property, I would say if you're not familiar with old homes or you're a "fault finder" by nature, then this probably isn't the hotel for you. However, if you're a glass-half-full kind of person, then I think for the price, this is one of the best values on the island. Yes, most rooms have to share a bathroom but we never once encountered a delay in our schedule because of having to wait, etc. - it simply didn't happen. And yes, the bathrooms are original with some tile repair that wasn't the best in the world, but the water flows, the soaps and shampoos smell wonderful, and if you look at the news - it's light years better off than the people in Jackson Mississippi's water supply right now. The perfect spot in the early afternoon or late evening is on the expansive front porch, where there is always a great view and a nice breeze. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. To sum up this review, if you want AC and perfection, pay $1,000 a night and stay elsewhere. If you want the very best you can buy for your dollar and can pretend you're living at the turn of the 20th century, then I think you'll be pleased with choice. We survived - and thrived - for a whole week here.

The bathroom was shared with others on the floor and was clean with fresh towels.

• Sean (2/5): - Their website says that they provide air conditioning.When we brought that to the staff's attention, they basically shrugged and said that's not the case. We stayed in two different rooms during our stay, and both bathrooms had mold in them. The morning that we woke up in the first room, we were also welcomed by many beetles in the bathroom that joined us for our morning routine. For an inn whose main clientele visits during the sweltering summer months, the only thing that they really provide are one ineffective fan per room and some decent tasting ice water in the lobby. Although this is one of the cheaper hotels in the area, they still charge way too much to be dealing with these kinds of problems.

• John (10/5): Great place lost in time - Absolutely loved it . We have been on the Block many times, but, never to Old Harbor . Loved the people at the hotel and the ambiance. Rooms were what I expected for a 100 + year old hotel. We always book with hotels owned or managed by the 1661 house . I read reviews that were not accurate in any way before I booked . several claimed only one outlet to a room . ( we had 3) . One claimed rotten decking .( not true ) . Although you are a mile and a half from New Shorman ( the ferry landing ) . There is a great bar by the docks about 50 yards from the hotel ,and Dead Eye Dicks Restaurant is one of the best on the island and it is only about 75 yards away . Skippers does breakfast , and it is right next to Dead Eye's . If you must get into town the taxi is a cheap 14 dollars and very efficient . Your stay entitles you to brunch at 1661 running from 8 to 10 A,M. Possiblty the best breakfast buffet you will ever have , 15 dollars per poerson if staying at the Narragansett. The only drawback is the shower water was cool . Many rooms have shared bathrooms . Never found it to be a problem at any time . Going back soon as possible

It was one of the smallest rooms I have ever stayed in but it was clean and the bed was comfortable. I am fine with sharing facilities, I always wake early so I am not competing for bathroom space. The location was stunning. If it was closer to the ferry, the price would have been doubled.
• Peter (6/5): - The location was nice, but that was all. We couldn’t take showers they had just chlorinated the water- gave us coupons for breakfast but after a day at the beach we neeeded showers!! The rust in the bathroom sink was awful. My mistake, I didn’t realize it had no tv.

• Tyler (4/5): - The staff were very nice and helpful except for at around 8 am they began to play music fairly loudly while cleaning, waking me and my girlfriend up. The rooms for the most part leave a lot to be desired. No real modern amenities. Cracks in the walls and the bedside tables. I noticed doors the for some of the other rooms even had huge gaps in the doors.
• Pat (2/5): - Photos of room were misleading. Property has not been updated in decades. Old tub, broken tiles, broken soap dish, leaking sink, piles of dirty towels on floor, no lamps in room, no closet, hold windows up with sticks. Great location but facilities need an overhaul. Staff was very nice though.
• Andrew (2/5): - There was a lot of damage done to the property. It was not clean. Fire alarm went off in the middle of the night and nobody came to turn it off.
• James (10/5): Great stay - Room was clean and comfortable. Staff was excellent and courteous. Walls a little thin, but that is the standard for historic properties. Great great sunset views, plenty of seating on the lawn to see the bay and nature's vistas. Very nice comfortable rockers on the front porch to watch all the activity of new harbor.

• Ashleigh (6/5): - Man it’s just so out of date. A room w one outlet and a dresser. No tv, fridge, closet, AC. Shower never got warm, never mind hot. It’s fine. It was clean. It served its purpose but for nearly $400/ night would not recommend. If you book early you can do much better for a similar price point.

• Peggy (6/5): - The property itself is a diamond in the rough. Needs a complete overhaul. The porch had holes in it and was roped off to prevent injury. Looks like the place hasn’t been updated in years. Shared bathrooms are doable but be prepared for the noisy doors from guests making trips to the restroom at all hours. Walls are paper thin. Biggest issue I had was the lack of quiet. I will say if you’re a heavy sleeper maybe not an issue for you. Rooms were clean and location was picturesque.
• Verified traveler (6/5): Has "Character" - Beautiful old, historic buildings which look great from afar. ... front porch rotting off the big building; annex building where we stayed had main doors which stay open all the time, old windows hard to open/close, absolutely nasty shower floor. Might've been clean but didn't look it. Drain pipe was sticking up out of the floor. Free coffee all day, but SO bad, barely worth drinking. Sheets/towels ample and clean, mattresses decent. Is it all of Block Island or just this place that thinks they can charge whatever without ever renovating/upgrading?

• Verified traveler (6/5): - The Narragansett Inn is a nice hotel. It is old and it requires a major overhaul. The exterior doors in our wing of the building wouldn’t close. One was right outside of our room. Due to the door not being able to close, it occasionally would slam from the wind blowing it closed. The location of the Narragansett Hotel is remarkable. It has a lot of potential and I would love to see the owners put some money into it to reach its potential. We came prepared for the fact that there wasn’t air conditioning. I think that money could be spent on many other upgrades before air conditioning.

• Kiley (8/5): A stay at the Inn - Cute little place, depending on the day there may or may not be breakfast but plenty of places on the island to eat. Be aware you will most likely have a shared bathroom which was not my favorite thing. Beds are comfy and service was nice for the stay. Payne's dock is right outside too and usually lots of things going on and taxi cabs always outside as well.
• Verified traveler (2/5): - The property is literally falling apart. A window in our room was held together with tape. A faulty fire alarm system went off both nights we were there. Photos of the property are deceptive. Staff and management are lovely but are on a sinking ship. The owners are not caring for the property. No amenities, no wifi, AC, TV and many rooms share bathrooms. At half the price we were charged it would have been too much.
• Verified traveler (8/5): - If you're looking for modern and chic, look elsewhere. BUT, if you're looking for hospitality and a view at an affordable price, this is the place. Staff was extremely nice and the hotel is owned by Hotel 1661 - so when we woke up, we had a very nice breakfast there for only $15 and the view was amazing. Only take away was that the rooms are dated and the private bathroom was very small, totally bearable.

• Verified traveler (8/5): Cheerful, friendly staff - We loved the location -- easy to put our kayaks in the water, easy to bike around the island and to walk everywhere, too -- especially to an excellent restaurant, Oars, just down the hill. The staff was very helpful and personable and the two rooms we stayed in were very clean and comfortable. Clearly the overall maintenance of the property is poor and we hope the building will not be allowed to deteriorate even further. Our room in the annex was overwhelmed during the day with the delicious smell of cooking bacon for Oars next door. We suppose this room may not be attractive to any vegetarians out there but we loved the smell and just wanted bacon all the time. Perhaps a ration of bacon could be included for guests staying in the back corner room of the annex. Thank you for a great visit!
• Grace (10/5): One of our world favorites!!! - I can’t say enough amazing things about this very special hidden gem! We loved that it was atop a hill surrounded by water. It feels like stepping back in time, and we felt instantly at peace. We booked room #1 as it was one of two rooms with a private bathroom. The bed was so comfortable. Restaurants within walking distance. Wrap around porch for wine at sunset. I’m so glad we opted for the “less posh” option at block island because it turned out to be one of our favorite hotels we’ve ever stayed at in the whole world! You stay here feeling like you truly know the heart of Block and got a true authentic experience. We loved that everything seemed to be preserved from over 100 years ago, but the rooms were updated with all the good things. It was a really nice break from technology not having TV or WiFi. We thought it might be hard, but there is so much natural beauty surrounding this inn that you don’t miss the tech world at all! We can’t wait to come back to this special special place.
