Guest Reviews
- Christopher (6/5): - The internet was not very good. Did not work in my room. I did find
- Hector (10/5): - Is good
- RAQUEL (10/5): - Friendly staff.
- Luis (10/5): - Bastante bien la verdad céntrica y personal amable
- nazario (8/5): - Good service
- CHRISTIAN (8/5): - No comment
- Adam (6/5): - Decent for the price. Nothing special about this property.
- ruben dario (8/5): - Propiedad bien ubicada y tranquila. Aunque sus instalaciones lucen viejas, creo que podrían darle más vista y luz a las habitaciones, pero en general para el propósito de dormir bien
- Arthur (2/5): - This is a 1 star hotel, definitely not a 3 star. As you enter, the lobby and elevator can pass for a 2/3 star hotel. Once you get to the hallways to the rooms, it is barely a 2 star.
I took pictures of the ceiling in the living area that show pealing paint on 1/2 of the ceiling and an air conditioner from Y2K.
- Kenbrownie (8/5): A very simple value hotel. - We were aware that this was not a 5 star by any means so our expectations were in check. We knew that we were paying a very budget price for a very budget hotel.
The area directly where the hotel is located is old but it gives you a real Panama City experience. The room was very small and old but the bed was clean and did the job. A two night stay was plenty however as the bed was less than plush. There was very little sound insulation for the room so anyone in the hallway or adjacent rooms could be heard with ease. There were children running about at times making noise which was a bit of a nuisance.
The shower was a bit like using a garden hose but the water was hot enough and the pressure was incredible. Bars of soap are provided but don’t expect any shampoo or lotions.
The location is great for exploring the nearby Malecon and old town Panama City. There are also many great local restaurants to choose from to get some real local flavours.
All in all it was a good budget hotel for a one or two night stay but you have to have very realistic and minimal luxury expectations.
- Erick (8/5): - Cold AC..good.
- michael (2/5): - They are not courteous , not friendly at all
- Viktor (10/5): - A
- Vladimir (8/5): - Like the staff professionalism!
- Verified traveler (4/5): no me gustó - ¡No me gustó! Me sentí muy mal por el mal olor de las sábanas, fundas y almohadas. Me quejé, pero no sirvió de nada, lo encontré sucio y dormí muy mal por el olor.
- Roberto (10/5): - Buen servicio
- Orayvon Marvin zigaro (10/5): - Good
- Lavern (10/5): - In the city. Everything is near. Everything in walking distance. $5 on yellow taxi to hotel, $3 in uber. Price is great. Hot water need to be better though. Would be nicer if the was a small fridge and microwave in room
- James (8/5): - Nice place basic in amenities but can’t beat the price and everyone is helpful and nice
- Anecia (8/5): - It was my first time at the hotel and it was ok and very clean they clean my room everyday and its cheap and affordble so i will say 8 out of 10
- Rhina (8/5): - Cómodas instalaciones
- Frederick (8/5): Nice budget hotel - This is a nice cheap hotel. Everything works and it is clean. It is very close to a metro station. If you are looking for a budget hotel, this one is very nice for what you pay.
As for hotels.com (expedia), big fail. I accidently booked the wrong dates. I tried to change the dates, and they said the hotel wouldn't do it. I called the hotel, and they said they would, but since it was done by expedia, I had to go through expedia. I called expeia back, and they had someone look into it. 3 days later, they said they could not get a refund, when all I wanted to do was change dates. So I show up when I needed to be there, and the hotel changed the dates for me.
- Marceen (6/5): - Property was ok except we had to ask for clean towels every morning because they don’t clean the rooms in the days
- MONICA (10/5): - location is convenient
- Yolanda (6/5): - Hotel económico sino te importa mucho la comodidad y ahorrar algún dinero te sirve, lo bueno es que está cerca de una estación de metro
- timothy (8/5): Inexpensive clean hotel - Inexpensive hotel , clean. Good restaurant. They did charge me $15 to wash one of their old sheets which was slightly soiled.
- Cedide (2/5): Cheaper than what you pay - This is a cheap place and there is an understanding that you get what you pay for. But not in this case here. This place feels very much like a place one would rent by the hour.
First sign was that they handed the remotes for the TV and AC at the reception. Lights were off in the corridors we had to use our phones to see the room numbers.
We rented 2 rooms. They were nothing like the photos. dark, small and claustrophobic, wires hanging and broken fixtures.. But worse was the sanitation. One room was made but sheets had body hair and stains on it, mold in the shower, air conditioner which was full of dust, dirty curtains... And be warned don't ever remove the sheets and look at the mattress.
We did not check the other room as it was not the kind that we wanted. A room with single beds rather than the room with a queen size bed we wanted.
Things broke down after that. The receptionist did not understand any English nor showed any interest in trying, She asked for more money but we could not understand why. At one point she said we have to call Hotels.com and cut us off. We did and they called the reception but failed to communicate and resolve the issue as well.
As there was nothing else to do we moved to different hotel although we had booked for 4 nights. Forget the comfort, we did not feel safe getting into bed.
So our suggestion is to avoid this place there much better around, or at least book for single night first. You can always extend but won't get money back.
- Cedide (2/5): Not worth it - This is a cheap place and generally you get what you pay for. Not here. This place feels like a place one would rent by the hour.
They handed the remotes for the TV and AC at the reception. Lights were off in the corridors we had to use our phones to see the room numbers.
And the rooms. We rented 2 rooms. They were nothing like the photos. dark, small and claustrophobic. Sanitation was worse. One room was made but sheets had body hair and stains on it, mold in the shower, dust blower as an air conditioner and so on.

At the end we had to abandon although we had booked for 4 nights. Just did not feel safe getting into bed anymore.
We traveled a lot in the America's, For us hotel is a place to crash to get ready for the next day. Our only real expectation is to not share bodily fluids and hairs and not to have issues. This did not meet it. So our advice would be to skip the place, or at least do not book for multiple nights initially. You wont get your money back.
- Mark (8/5): - Our stay was pleasant. The hotel is very basic but clean. The water does not get hot, but somewhat warm is fine in a tropical country. The area outside the hotel gets a bit noisy at times. The restaurant next door was convenient and we ate breakfast there routinely.
- Alex Joel (4/5): - Bastante accesible.
Mala calidad de la cama, mala calidad de las sabanas, cucarachas pequeñas dentro de la habitación.
- Scott (10/5): - We stayed for a month and found everything to be great except for the loud music that would sometimes occur from 10PM to 2PM at a business next door. The staff was very friendly, helpful and attentive at all times.
- Hector (10/5): - very quiet and relaxing
- Anthony (8/5): - Clean, basic accommodations for a good price.
- Rachelle (2/5): Don’t stay there. - The room had a bed that was the same size as to what was advertised and the condition of the room was not too good. There was painter’s tape on the doorframe, walls were so thin that you could hear the construction in the room next at night. Rusty water came out of the tiny shower. The neighborhood was not good, sewage in the street and garbage everywhere.
- Carlton (8/5): - The food was very good
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Peacefull and quiet.
- Domingos (10/5): Amazing - They’re extremely friendly and awesome internet
Also good restaurant at the hotel
- Stephan (4/5): Nowhere near a 3 star - There is no way that is is a 3 star hotel. The rooms are the size of large closets. The window are the old louvre type you have to crank open. The air conditioner is from the 70’s. The beds are very small and worn out. There is nothing in the bathroom but soap and towel. I had to move sideways to get in and out of the shower. The whole building is in bad need of renovation. This place is 1 star or 1.5 star at best.
- 787marilync (6/5): Cheap hotel in a sketchy area - I stayed here my first 2 nights in Panama City. My initial impression was that it looked like a place that charged by the hour, and I immediately wanted to turn around and leave. However, I was tired from an 8-hour bus ride from San Jose, Costa Rica so I decided to stay and deal with it in the morning. After a shower and good night's sleep, the hotel looked a little better than the night before.
I had a double room with a balcony. The balcony is the smallest I have seen, only about 3 feet wide and 1 foot deep. Not big enough for a chair, only big enough to stand on. Nonetheless, it was nice to open the door and get some outside air. I also was able to hand wash a few things and hang them on the balcony door to dry overnight.
The room was medium/large (18 sq meter/195 sq ft) with a desk, desk chair, and bedside stand. No luggage rack, room safe, coffee maker, or fridge. The furniture was old, but the room was clean. The lighting was good, and the WiFi and air conditioner worked well. There was a flat-screen TV, but no English-language channels. They use keys for the door, not key cards, and you must manually lock the door with the key when you exit. There was no ice bucket, but I requested and was given a pitcher filled with ice.
The bathroom was very small and was well-lit. No toiletries except 2 small bars of soap. The water was hot and the pressure was good, but Panama is so hot and humid that I only took cool showers. They provided 2 bath towels, but no hand towels, wash cloth, or bath mat. The shower dripped constantly. There was no fan or a/c in the bathroom, so it was very hot and humid.
The receptionists and bellman were friendly, but only one person spoke a little English. This is common in Panama and not a problem since I speak conversational Spanish. The only common areas are two small seating areas in the lobby, neither of which have air conditioning. There is no food at the hotel, but there is a 24-hour restaurant attached to the hotel. It serves very good food and is popular with locals.
Some reviewers describe the area as "authentic" or "working class." Respectfully, I think those are euphemisms. This is a poor neighborhood and it looks sketchy and unsafe. The area across the street from the hotel looks like a junkyard. The sidewalks around the hotel are raggedy, and cars park all over them so you have to walk in the street to maneuver around them.
In some ways, though, the location is better than it initially appears. There is a metro station, Estacion Loteria, down the hill about a block away. The Cinto Costero promenade is only 3 blocks down the hill from the hotel, and is a lovely place to stroll and people watch. Cinto Costero also has a nice view of the Panama City skyline. You can also walk to Casco Viejo or take an Uber for a couple dollars.
If you go up the hill from the hotel and turn left at the first street, there is a casino on the corner. Continue walking, and across the street katy-korner to the casino is a large grocery store, Machetazo. This street, Peru, looks slightly better than the street on which the hotel is located. There is also a police station around the corner from the hotel, and police sometimes hang out in front of the hotel and at the restaurant. This adds a measure of security to the hotel, and probably keeps out most of the riff-raff that frequent other low-budget hotels in the area.
If you're a male traveling alone or two men together, you might not mind the hotel or location. The area is loud and lively, and there is a popular beer garden next door to the hotel. If you're a couple, there is nothing romantic about the hotel. As a single female I kind of liked the vibrancy of the area, but I did not like its seediness.
I only paid $38 night, and it was probably worth that. (Rooms without balconies are cheaper). If you're a solo female or a family on vacation, I suggest spending a few more dollars and choosing another area and a different hotel if you can afford it. However, if your budget is super tight, and you just need a clean place to sleep with few amenities, the Hotel Acapulco seems to be one of the better low-budget hotels in Calidonia.
- Henriette (6/5): - Good location, near the Metro (subway). Hotel restaurant is convenient.
Only 1 bad thing: the receptionists are so cold and don't speak English.
They don't even want to look at you.
- Mr d (6/5): just about OK but great restaurant - arrived around 9pm and found a secure parking spot easily with help from friendly attendant. quick cheerful check in and very efficient elevator, however room disappointing as very basic wit many marks on walls and opaque window which didn't open. However apart from this th room and bathroom were very clean and bed reasonably comfortable with efficient but noisy A/C. high pressure shower with plenty of hot water. fab restaurant with good well priced food and drinks open 24 hours. five minute walk to Loteria subway and less than 10 to Cinco de Mayo station where there is a machine selling Metronis cards. To sum up the room was just about acceptable but the other plus points, restaurant and location made it a slight recommendation
- jon (8/5): I will be back. - The Acapulco is a great choice for the price. The hotel is a bit dated but it is clean and the personnel really seem to care. The only problem was a very noisy AC, which I fixed for my stay and I emailed them to tell them to to fix permanently.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - good food right next door, had some issues with the A/C but not a real ´problem
- Faith (10/5): - The property was good. Everything is within walking distance.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - I want to thank one of the hotel staffs,a young boy, named alexander ,he way so kind and helpful, the hotel has very friendly and kind staffs ,my overall conclusion -this hotel is a budget hotel which is worth spending on ,one of the best hotels in panama city costwise compare to others in this level of budget.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We would stay here again. Nice desk representative.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff were great and friendly. The hotel is okay. The police station was walking distance. You can shop for everything. Ev
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Area is not the best, but price is right. Very noisy area.
- 937Jast (10/5): Good for the Price - Hotel Acapulco is a good budget hotel for the traveller needing a night or two near downtown Panama City. For me, the room was clean and quiet with a great shower.
The front desk was polite and helpful. And the 24 hour restaurant next door is great. The area can get a little rough at night but if you've travelled in Latin America before this shouldn't be a problem.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Our Panamian friends did not like the area so they requested we move.
- Valerie (10/5): Clean rooms daily - Not a bad location for what we wanted to see. Clean sheets, towels and room daily, great restaurants next door, friendly staff.
- Valerie (10/5): Nice - Clean, cheap accommodation. Good service, good food next door. The location worked for us.
- thomaso45 (6/5): Nice but not great - The hotel was priced within the Budget Pricing category, but was nicer than what you would have thought. The only true negative was the location. It is located in the poorer section of Panama City, but that is enough to ruin your safe stay.
- Dariusz (8/5): Good value for money - Pretty good for a budget hotel. I recommend it. Also, there's a good restaurant next door and it's opened 24h.
- Sherman A. (10/5): - Na
- Mely (10/5): - Nice hotel near the city nice area people was nice and helpful very friendly
- MLtravel_dude (4/5): Rude reception - I found the receptionists consistently rude. I thought the first one may be just having a bad day. But the second one was the same.
I don’t believe in pretentious politeness, or as if their livelihood depended on it. But I don’t expect to be treated at a hotel as if by immigration officials either. I only wish the usual courtesy like one shows to strangers, as has been the case in the rest of the country of Panama.
Well, I can’t agree with the other reviewers. Trying not to let the poor service cloud my judgement, I still think for the price, I expected more, like a Holiday Inn or similar. It definitely is not.
It’s quite far from any concentration of restaurants or bars. So take that into account.
- RastaTravelCr (10/5): Nice - Quiet - Close to the Cinta Costera - We stayed all the time when we go Panama City cause is reasonable rates, people is really nice, the metro to the Albrook Mall is right at the corner, and we felt as home away from home.
That´s a perfect place for us to go again and again.
- buxtonred (8/5): Value - We stayed here for 3 nights. Top location, can walk to the water or old town, supermarket and shops also. Nothing flash, but has everything you need. Good local neighborhood, real Panama.
If you need a taxi for the canal or airport, or anywhere else, contact joe, who hangs about in the street. He used to work at the canal, real character, with good English. 50761096433
- LJ_Can (8/5): Pleasantly Surprised - For the price this was a great find. The room wasn't the biggest but it was clean and I take that deal anytime. The staff was friendly. It is close to subway, minutes from 2 casinos and a few minute walk to the esplanade, which gives access to the rest of the city. It is also only a twenty minute walk to the Ancient City. The restaurant downstairs had really good food and is 24 hours. We were also on the 5th floor so street noise was considerably less.
- janetm23 (10/5): A working class hotel - Understand this is not a fancy place but you don't pay fancy prices, either. It is an older building but is neat and clean. The hot water is very hot so be cautious. The people are friendly if you are. Panamanians, indeed most Latin Americans, live life at high decibels. This is their custom. If noise bothers you, bring ear plugs. I bring noise-cancelling ear protectors for use when the parties go on late at night. My room overlooked the street & was noisy at times. Bus and taxi horns are freely used even during the night. Lots of traffic.
Few here speak much English. It is good to know some Spanish or use Google Translate. My Spanish improved a lot.
Panama City is hot & muggy. Air conditioners are run day and night. I was here during the rainy season and saw some spectacular lightening shows. There were fabulous firework displays for some holidays.
Next door is a restaurant that serves great food. My favorite dessert was their homemade flan. Delicious. I drank tap water and ate the salads and had no illness,
On check-out, turn in your key and the AC and TV remotes.
Here is where you meet the real people, not tourists. I loved it.
- HappyGringoMiami (10/5): Great food in the restaurant - This is a small hotel located close to the old city Panama, but has the best sancocho in town, and also all the food in its restaurant because it is almost home made.
It is very inexpensive and people are very kind.
- HAMPTONUNIVPIRATE (10/5): Real Panama City for REAL PEOPLE! - Great place to stay if you want an authentic experience with the working class of Panama. I have been traveling to Panama twice a year for the past 16 years. I love this place the restaurant is extremely tasty, not pricey and open 24 hours - The rooms are clean, neat and the staff very helpful! This hotel is one of the "orginals" before the pricey high rises. If you can just relax and enjoy how close you are to walking many places from this hotel. No matter where you go in the world you should always think of safety, I have not ever had a problem with the location. Generally speaking you can get more bang for your buck!!!
- PuraVida2211 (10/5): Slice of Life - The hotel and especially where it was located gave me what I believe was a 1st hand look at the people and daily life for the average person in Panama. I stayed in this hotel for 7 days in the middle of April 2016. Overall the service was acceptable. The maid service was outstanding. Couldn't beat the price of about $40 per day.
The room was comfortable and clean. I especially enjoyed the balcony room they gave me fronting the hotel. Sure it was noisy most of the time, but I liked being able to peer out anytime, night or day, to see what was going on. There always was something interesting happening. The air conditioning worked great, so if I wanted to shut the world out all I needed to do was close the balcony doors. The WiFi was just acceptable.
Bars, restaurants, and other local establishments were close by so I was able to get what I needed at most any hour of the day. I met a number of kind, interesting locals during my stay. I would return to this hotel again.
- RalphvdHoek (8/5): Nice hotel - Clean hotel and friendly staff. Price is fine for the quality of the room. We had airconditioning, shower was good and clean. Beds were a bit stiff but that's how I prefer my matras. Nicely situated between the places worth visiting. I'd book again if I needed a place to stay.
- BelevingIsBezit (8/5): Good location and decent place. - We spent 2 x 1 night going to and coming from our final destination. The reception and service are allways professional. The location is good. Not far from the Boulevard, Old Town and Albrook. Free WiFi and a restaurant Benidorm inside with very nice dishes and open 24hours. Don't worry about what happens on the street, just talk with them and you will enjoy that also.
4 hours before take-off, ladies handbag was stolen from besides our table at the restaurant. Stupid and not alert enough us ! Thanks to people nereby and mostly thank to the Policia Superman in civil and other uniformed Policia de Panama-City, the bag was found with the passport. So , thanks to them all, were we able to catch our flight.
- Palsace (10/5): Hotel Acapulco, Panama City, Panama - I have stayed at the Hotel Acapulco every year for some days for at least 10 years. I think it is a terrific hotel with a great restaurant, the Benidorm. The people are friendly. United Airlines recently lost my bag for 4 days. The reception at the hotel kept phoning them. Everyone was on the lookout for my bag. I travel extensively bewteen Panama and Colombian Darien. Many of my friends from the Gulf of Uruba, also stay at the Acapulco Hotel. The rooms are clean, the bed are comfortable, the AC work well. I speak fluent Spanish and am friendly with some of the taxi drivers and the women who work in that wonderful restaurant, most for many years, and I have never heard of the hotel having prostitutes. What nonsense. And the restaurant at 8:00pm, filled with cheerful, mostly Costa Ricans, is one my pleasures. The coffee in the morning is terrific. I call it, 'The Happiest Restaurant in the World'.
- tinliz02 (6/5): It's ok - I stayed there one night before my flight home. The rooms were clean and reasonably priced. The front desk staff were helpful and the restaurant next door is good. I didn't have any issues with safety. I also didn't see any prostitutes but, like any hotel, some could've been staying there.
- VixB855 (4/5): Full of prostitutes! - We only stayed here for one night and id never go back!
The lonley planet has a great write up about this place....I can only assume they have never been!!
The room was clean, cheap and the reception staff were friendly but that's all the good stuff I can say. The area is a bit dodgy! And after 7pm the hotel is full of prostitutes.
I would not recommend!
- samsonholiday (4/5): hotel acapulco - This downtown hotel mainly comes up well because of its location .
It is situated upstairs from the 24 hour restaurant in the area.
Otherwise there's not so much going in its favour.
