- Price (1/5): Do not recommend - If location is the only thing that is important to you, than this is the place. We checked in and immediately regretted our decision and ended up booking a lovely airbnb down the road that was clean. I didn't even want to sit on the bed at the horse and jockey.

- Daniel (1/5): Do not stay here - The pub was nice. The hotel was not nice. The extremely loud music going until 1am was too much to bear. Could not even hold a conversation in our room over the booming disco music. Booking.com should not be promoting this place. It is a complete rip off. The bathrooms were not clean and had no lock. The room had no place to put your things other than the floor.
- Leigh & David (2/5): A very basic hotel room charging motel prices, would not recommend or return - Location was handy being reasonably central in town, pub was okay for drinks Room was not very clean, very old with broken bed legs the collapsed during the night and had to prop up for the remainder of the sleep. There was no hot water in the morning and very temperamental to maintain even temp in the evening. No TV in room or in any common area.

- Travis (7/5): Stayed in MATAMATA for one night so that I could catch with elderly family members the next day. - It is an old pub hotel and the facilities match what you would expect from a premises built in the early 20th Century. There were communal bathrooms etc. I was oaky with that. It was handy that the restaurant was just downstairs. Nothing of note.

Once the music from the bar stopped at around 11pm I was kept awake by a generator running on and off most of the night. Had to close the window to reduce the noise -in an already hot room.

Very tired and dated looking accommodation - both room, private bathroom and shared kitchen area. Although it looked clean superficially, it didn't 'feel' clean, particularly carpets and upholstery. Shower pressure was poor and the drainage was slow. Shower curtain not adequate to stop floor flooding. Fixtures and fittings all rusted.

The karaoke music was so loud, but I was told there would be loud music - I loved the first room I slept in, a lovely bed, clean sheets and spacious bathroom, however when I came back the second afternoon/ evening I was shocked find a young man had moved into my room and was sleeping in my bed. I was impressed with the new male manager and a delightful female staff member, who was on duty that afternoon/evening. Both staff members apologised, and went above and beyond to rectify this problem. The young guy and I met for a beer in the dining room and we saw the funny side of things. The best beer I have ever had, Thank you. When I returned the second afternoon/evening, I was shocked to find a young man had moved into my room and was sleeping in my bed, my property had been REMOVED by a staff and I was NOT informed of any of these changes by reception, I even double checked with the young man at reception in the morning and arranged to pay for extra nights. I had NO idea why this occurred, I found this very unprofessional and I was very upset that my luggage and personal items were handled by a staff member, and relocated to a smaller room up the hall without a private bathroom. I was exhausted after my flight from Brisbane to Auckland and the coach trip to Mata Mata and needed a safe and stable space to rest and recharge without all this upheaval.

- Shannon (2/5): BEDBUGS! - Centrally located. Run, dont walk, from this place. The rooms are quite uncomfortable. Extremely stuffy and not even a small table or desk to put things. Wi-Fi only works on some of the rooms. There is a small kitchenette on the end of the hallway, but I did not know until the morning as the staff didn’t tell me and there is no information in the rooms. The worst thing was my room was infected with bedbugs. When I contacted the staff on duty at 2 AM, they accused me of bringing the bedbugs in with me. He did not let me remove my things from the room as he did not want another room infected. I am traveling by bicycle and this was the first hotel on my trip. I am very sensitive to bugs while sleeping, and would have woken up immediately in an another setting if there is an issue with bedbugs. I knew immediately when I turned the light off something was crawling all over me. My arms were burning. I found many bedbugs, waiting in the sheets in the morning for me when I went back to get my things. There was black spotting on the mattress and in the sheets, which is an indication of a bedbug infestation. I did not bring these bugs in with me. The owner did not offer me a refund.

Having a band in the garden bar the 1st night & DJ 2nd night did not bother us as the place was soundproof. Undisturbed sleep. Grandaughter n mumma visited on both days. Once door was closed, we did not hear other visitors walking around down corridor. Not a biggie, but I noticed that there were no 'hand towels' although we had an extra bath towel that we used instead & bathroom window was stuck closed

- levy (10/5): If I'm ever back that way again, this where I will stay - Location was excellent in walking distance of every thing e.g shops cafe's and other bars, plus the RSA where our EME reunion was held No complaints, I enjoyed my whole 2 days stay, My accommodation was excellent, room was spotless, found no faults at all, staff very helpful and friendly, most accommodating indeed.Entertainment never bothered me as I had been pre- warned when I booked the accommodation. Awesome weekend

A Queen room with 2 beds was booked and paid for. The actual room was a box room with 2 single beds barely able to move inside. Beds were uncomfortable. Would not stay again and would not recommend

- Lily (6/5): Basic accommodation, good for one night stay if you're visiting hobbiton - Located ontop of a pub so it's easy to pop down for a drink or a bite. There's some parking behind the pub, but plenty of street parking. The rooms are basic, but I only needed a place to stay for the night so I can make an early morning trip to Hobbiton, so wasn't looking for anything fancy. The room was decent sized and had it's own private bathroom and shower. It's across the road from a super market where you can buy supplies. There is a communal kitchen you can use to make tea coffee, but they have signs saying no cooking. A fridge was available to store stuff along with everyone else staying there. This is a very basic accommodation, probably more suited to backpackers, but I opted for a private room with bathroom. With that said, the shower was blocked and wasn't draining properly. I was there for only one night, so didn't matter too much. There was no TV in the room. There's also very little support once the pub closes around 9pm. We actually had a power blackout around 11pm after the pub had closed for the night, and no one around to fix the issue until well after midnight.

- Allan (6/5): - This property's accommodation needs significant updating, whilst the bedding was clean, the general appearance of the room was shabby, the curtains were halfway down the windows, the window latches were broken, so we could not close them to block out any noise or the street lights right outside the window. The cost didn't not match the accommodation. I'm unlikely to recommend this to anyone, unless they need urgent one night accommodation and there is nothing else available.

- Verified traveler (4/5): - Did not feel safe so I didn’t end up staying. There were undesirable people and the shared bathrooms made me not want to have to walk down the hall way by myself. If my husband was there I would put up with it. I didn’t realise this particular room did not have a bathroom. It was clean enough but yeah I didn’t feel safe. My key was put back in the return within 15 minutes and I left. The staff member seemed annoyed by my checking in and I was told she’s leaving in 20 minutes so if I needed something it had to be quick. I ended up on a friends couch back in Morrinsville.
- Des (4/5): Really? - It's what you'd expect of an in modernized 1950s hotel. The room I was in cost 140 for the night. Ensuuite with leaking taps,dirty toilet brush water,no bedside lamp,no radio,no television. Over priced.
