Guest Reviews
- Ove (10/5): Superb hotell - Fint hotell, super service og god mat.
- shaun (9/5): Lovely. Will return - Lovely location. Comfortable lounge. Friendly staff. Great wine. Bedroom was very cosy but nice for one night.
- Giuseppe (4/5): Nice staff , however we had no hot water and the way this has been handled was unacceptable in my view way - Beautiful No hot water
Dinner had burnt veg tha had to be returned
- Rosalind (10/5): -
- Redford (10/5): -
- SMarlor (8/5): - The location is picture postcard stuff, beautiful surroundings and a lovely venue. The shared lounge room was very nice and cosy with the fire. The food in the restaurant was excellent. Staff were great. The room was a little basic, no wardrobe just a hanging space, no fridge, small en-suite, and the room took a while to get warm with the heater (no air con).
- Rosemary (10/5): Really enjoyed it a big treat ! - Lovely food .. dinner & breakfast Sadly the wine wasn’t to my taste too dry but I was pleased alternative was available
- Susie (7/5): Beautiful location, lovely breakfast - Beautiful location, fantastic breakfast and the room we were eventually moved to was very nice. Pleasant downstairs lounge area. We did a lovely walk around the vineyard which has beautiful views over the Downs. Upon check in a dog was barking non stop in the room next to us. After establishing that it wasn't going to stop we reported this to reception. Thankfully we were able to move rooms. However we were surprised that the couple had been allowed to leave the dog in the room whilst they went out for the afternoon. Had there been no other rooms available this would have hugely impacted our stay. I'm afraid I did not rate the comfort of the bed.
- Cheryl (10/5): -
- Rita (9/5): Lovely peaceful vineyard accomodation. - Sympathetically restored barn accomodation in beautiful setting near Alfriston. The room was small but comfortable, but it would have been tight for more than one person. Loved the courtyard garden with some of my favourite plants. The resident’s lounge was also very stylish. Very tasty and plentiful breakfast. Staff really helpful. It was very hot during my stay and the Flint Barns Dining Room had no air conditioning, just a rather feeble fan.
- Claudia (9/5): -
- Marie (9/5): - Setting is stunning. Lovely to be surrounded by the vineyard. Only issue was the room temp. 27 degrees. But a fan was provided which we kept on full all night. A bit noisy, so pleased I remembered my ear plugs!
- Siv Ellen (9/5): - Fantastisk sted, hyggelig personale, god mat og rom med særpreg. På varme dager hadde det vært bra med aircondition.
- Anastasija (10/5): Exceptional -
- Naomi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stephen (8/5): Very good -
- Jason (10/5): Amazing, fantastic, would love to go back. - Beautiful barn rooms situated in a stunning area. Room did smell a little musty due to the wetroom and no ventilation other than a window.
- Stephanie (9/5): Superb -
- Craig (10/5): Exceptional -
- Del (8/5): Nice stay, good wine, quiet - The location was quite remote, fine if you are driving less so when walking like I was. Breakfast was great, as was the evening meal. Room was a little small, OK for me travelling alone but would have been a squeeze for 2 people. Room was small for a double
- Henrietta (10/5): A wonderful weekend discovering the Sussex countryside and vineyards as well as a family wedding - Very good Bedroom perhaps a little small
- Rosemary (9/5): All in all a great stay - Really lovely area with beautiful scenery, Did a lovely walk, drank good wine, Room all clean and good size. Good drawing room to have your pre drinks in. Beds were quite small
- Angela (9/5): Lovely stay on a beautiful vineyard - The accommodation is nestled in the Rathfinny wine estate. It has great views and the building looks very well kept. The breakfast was excellent and able to accommodate allergies. The staff were very attentive. The bed was super comfy too.
If you have a chance, I would recommend tasting the wine from the shop cellar. There's no need to book the tour (unless you want to see more of the wine making facilities), and they didn't charge us for the tasting. We did buy a bottle of sparkling wine, but there was no pressure to buy. There are also walks you can do around the estate. The room has some obvious design flaws. One issue is the lack of airflow in the building. This is a real shame as it is otherwise stunning. The lack of airflow causes the room to get very hot quite quickly, even for a relatively mild month like March. The bathroom also needs an extractor fan as the steam stayed in the room after a shower, trapping hot condensation in the room and making it even hotter. We did manage to cool the room somewhat by switching off the thermostat and opening the tiny window (apparently the heating in the building is set to warm up to 21 degrees when the temperature drops to 18 degrees, which is still too hot for a good night's sleep). The room was also very small - while this was manageable for a 2 night stay this would have been quite uncomfortable for a longer duration. The luggage we had barely fit in! I also thought it was a lost opportunity for the room to have such a tiny window - the views are lovely and it would been nice to appreciate it from the room. Finally, the road is very bumpy from the tasting room to the accommodation - maintenance is much needed!
All that said for the shortcomings, we did have a lovely stay and the staff couldn't do anything about the building design flaws.
- Kathrin (9/5): Superb -
- Carolyn (8/5): Very good - Lovely staff The room was a teeny bit small
- Eamonn (8/5): Very good -
- Giselle (8/5): Exellent and memorable stay - highly recommended - Excellent services and food. The standard room is slightly smaller than usual...yet the facilities are all good no venting inside the bathroom
- Peter (6/5): Pleasant one night visit for a solo traveler. I would have been deeply disappointed if my wife had accompanied me. - Great location, beautiful buildings I had the France room in the barn. I expected it to be small but I didn’t expect the lack of sound insulation! I could hear every flush of the toilet next door, the run of the water in the basin and heard every conversation. No wonder you provided ear plugs.
- Alex (9/5): Superb -
- Brendan (10/5): Exceptional - The staff, location, style of property and food was incredible. One of the best breakfast's I have had. Staff on check in were incredibly helpful. Make sure you order a glass of wine too as their wine is incredible! Room was lovely but i definitely think it was on the smaller side which i did not realise when booking. I wouldn't have wanted more than one person in there.
- Neil (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stephanie (9/5): Superb -
- Mary (8/5): Very good -
- Caroline (9/5): Unusual special place to stay - Lovely building beautifully furnished
Very nice professional staff
Excellent breakfast!
peaceful with great views Budget Bedroom very small with double bed against the wall
Small windows open onto internal hallway, noise from people passing through with automatic lights going on and off
- Daphnella (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful location in the middle of the vineyard, so tranquil. Super cosy room, dinner and breakfast both excellent. Staff were wonderful throughout, at the barns and very knowledgeable for the wine tour and tasting. Will be back! Phone signal is patchy but wonderful if you want to escape from it all!
- Hodson (9/5): Superb - My single bed room was small, but excellently appointed. Very comfortable with all hotel facilities packed into the small space. A real coffee machine, tea matching facilities with fresh milk and modern shower. The spaceous lounge was furnished with comfortable armchairs and setees with pleasant aspects to the vineyard.
The quality of food and presentation, both evening meal and breakfast was the best I've seen in an English country hotel and not bettered since I visited that home of French gastronomy, Toulouse. Prices reasonable considering the quality of the food.
Am planning my next visit to include a tour of the winery. Being placed on a table next to the kitchen door. 25 minute wait for breakfast second course.
- Nicole (6/5): Upmarket but tiny single room - Upmarket in the country. Breakfast was good. I had a tiny single room with no view which was very hot, so thank goodness for the fan. Needs a shower mat. Bombarded with emails beforehand. No TV.
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Wright (8/5): Staff very welcoming & friendly, bedrooms are small. - Beautiful location, very quiet & peaceful. The lounge & dining area are comfortable & spacious. The bedrooms are small- 8x5 is not much room with a double bed. It’s ok for 1 night but as one side of the bed is against the wall it would not be good for further nights.
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jason (9/5): Enjoyable stay amongst a wonderful setting. - The breakfast was really tasty. The space that was used as a 'snug' was nice to relax in. Overall, very quiet and enjoyable. The room was quite bijou but that was the only drawback. The room got quite hot but we didn't realise that there was a temperature panel until the morning.
- Taro (10/5): Relaxing, beautiful and enjoyable. I’ll be back - Beautiful laid back place. The countryside is gorgeous
- Hannah (10/5): I absolutely loved it! It's such a peaceful place to stay and unwind. - I stayed at The Flint Barns B&B for 1 night whilst I was travelling. I absolutely loved it! It's such a peaceful place to stay and unwind. There's some lovely walks to go on around the Rathfinny wine estate. My room was very cozy and the breakfast was delicious! Really enjoyed my stay and I will be back.
- Anna (9/5): Overall a wonderful experience! - I was walking on the South Downs Way and it was a very long walk at the end of a tiring day uphill! But it was a lovely view! Just found the room a bit small and dark with a very small window!
- Ann (10/5): Feel good factor was very high. - Location, high quality, atmosphere Nothing - room was very small but absolutely fine for 2 small people and worth it for the cheaper price
- Margaret (9/5): Superb -
- Grant (10/5): Very enjoyable indeed. - Beautiful and interesting location. Friendly and helpful staff. Food excellent. Nothing.
- Frederick (10/5): Exceptional -
- Battaglio (9/5): Idilllic stay - The place is located in a beautiful vineyard. Guests have the opportunity to take a walk in the estate, following the Rathfinny Trail. I did that just before dinner, very relaxing, beautiful views. Excellent breakfast a la carte. The last few 50/60 metres of the road that leads to the hotel are not well maintained and full of potholes and gravel. Might be an issue if you're travelling by motorcycle, like I did.
- Jolanda (5/5): I was excited about our visit but I left very disappointed. - We had the cosy room, so I wasn’t expecting it to be big- it felt like a dorm room , room exactly 120cms wider than the double bed and window was internal-the photo on the website didn’t show this…. No Aircon and no air if you didn’t open the 30 cm wide window that looked into the reception/ front door -very noisy. Privacy was interesting as we looked directly into our neighbours window -the space separating us was the width of the front doors. We only had black out roller blinds. We did try to up grade to the next size- but at breakfast our neighbours in a bigger room said it wasn’t much better. The sense of school dorm furniture in the dining area and bedrooms / food was definitely the high point in regards to taste and presentation but the serves we carefully planned out to the number of beans - no sense of generosity- breakfast / no offers of seconds on anything - I felt that everything had been costed to an inch of its life.
- Alison (9/5): Very convenient to be able to stay at the wedding reception venue - Lovely views, great breakfast and friendly staff Room was quite small
- Narmin (9/5): Lovely stay in a beautiful vineyard - Lovely location. Breakfast was very nice and staff attentive and helpful. The vineyard was beautiful and amazing. I recommend taking the tour which was very informative and fun. The room was nicely decorated and clean. Slept well. The room was a bit on the small side but I kind of knew if would be and it was very cute so I was happy with it. The only thing I hadn't realised was that it did not have a TV and since there is not much to do there in the evening it would've been nice to have some entertainment for the evening and I missed having a TV. I managed to use my mobile to watch some things in the end. No view but I knew that would be case as well.
My room was just above the entrance and near the outdoor entertainment area, so when I was trying to get a nap during the afternoon (after the tour and a little bit of tasting wine) I could hear the young people who had gathered outside and were socialising, so had to close the window (which I had opened to get some air in the room as it was warm and stuffy that day). With the window closed though I think the noise didn't bother me much thankfully.
I didn't want to eat at the restaurant at the hotel as I didn't want to have a two course meal and they don't seem to have an a la carte option but unfortunately there were not many options nearby so ended up eating in Seaford, as the restaurants in Afriston seemed to be on the pricey side. One thing I have to add about the restaurant is that it was a bit claustrophobic and didn't have any windows anywhere, so to me it wasn't very inviting, which is one of the reasons I didn't want to eat there. It is a shame with such nice views outside, not to position the restaurant somewhere and somehow that there would be windows down onto the vineyard. The living room had a nice view though but because I was on my own I didn't use it that much.
- Lizzy (6/5): Pleasant - beautiful setting and lovely food. sound proofing in rooms was effective and there's a lovely walk around the estate. bed v comfy
would recommend asking for a room on level 1 or 2 ad we were ground floor and it was gloomy despite the weather being beautiful very poor value for money. bathroom far too small, with a shower that got the whole floor wet as the shower floor doesn't have a lip or indent to stop the shower flooding. extractor fan didn't work so whole room steamed up and there were hairs on the shower wall when we arrived.
breakfast is only open between 8 and 9.30 and you have to agree your arrival time in advance-for us that was a little stressful as we like to give our selves the opportunity to lie in whilst we're on holiday
For the price we paid I would have expected a better functioning room and better amenities eg dressing gowns etc
- Limmerlane (9/5): Superb - Good breakfast Too far to walk to
- David (3/5): Who had the bright idea to charge twenty pounds for an hour of early check-in at 2pm instead of 3pm? - The view and surrounding countryside. The ridiculous non-welcome, having flown in that morning from the USA and driven straight there, arriving at two pm and told to go away and come back later as the small single room was "being cleaned"... when in fact, if you read the fine print, they have a 20 pound early check in charge... which we would probably have paid had we not been driving there direct from the airport,.... Allas, no flexibility at all and we were sent back down the 1 mile long driveway to kick our heels for an hour. A bizarre experience all in all. Who would have had the bright idea to charge twenty pounds extra for a check in one hour earlier anyways? Slightly bonkers way to greet tired guests.
- Rosie (9/5): Superb - Lovely feel, staff excellent, food very good . Only downside was noise of (very efficient) plumbing and I suspect I woke up neighbouring rooms when I got up and left early am due to hard floors and heavy oak doors.
- Diana (10/5): The whole experience of staying at Rathfinny was very special and we were made to feel special. - The breakfast was delicious and served in a very relaxed manner. I loved that the menu told you where they sourced all their foods from I would have liked the bedroom to have been slightly larger as my husband and I had to dance around the floor space to get dressed and undressed.
- John (9/5): Peaceful, different, comfortable, comforting, interesting, lovely wine & food, lovely staff - It was lovely to have interesting and delicious options that were not FLINGLISH for breakfast! The staff were so friendly and helpful and the setting is stunning. I went on a wonderful day in May when there was an aurora borealis! The wine is beautiful! Nothing at all
- Karsten (5/5): overall a good experience - amazing breakfast, very nice helpfull staff, breathtaking vieuws! the room was very very small it
- Anita (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful location, very comfortable room, delightful staff and delicious food. A perfect stay! N/A
- Annie (10/5): Wonderful! - Stunning location and wonderful accommodation. Helpful and friendly staff. Thank you, we’ll be back! Nothing!
- Suzanne (9/5): The Rathfinny rooms at the flint barns are a fantastic place to stay in the heart of a working vineyard. Truly stunning - This was our second stay in the cosy double at Rathfinny Wine Estate. The room is cosy, but perfect for a nights stay. We woke up to a foggy vineyard, which was quite beautiful! Nothing not to like! The Flint barns are stunning!
- Christopher (9/5): Comfortable stay in a picturesque location. - Location is stunning, the winery is very nice and the tasting room is superb. The included breakfast was great and common areas were good. Bathroom was great. The rooms we booked were pretty small.
- Az (8/5): Very good -
- Laura (9/5): Superb - Beautiful location , excellent food
- Sam (10/5): A wonderful stay enjoying a beautiful location with delicious wines and food! And looked after by lovely staff! - Our second stay at this beautiful property … location, ambiance, food and service are all second to none!
We enjoyed a great tour with Maxine - and despite it being our second visit, got to see other parts of the wine process that we didn’t see in the summer and learn a little more about Rathfinny wines … everyone on the Rathfinny team are always so welcoming and enthusiastic!
- Laura (9/5): Superb -
- Joe (9/5): Superb -
- Barrie (8/5): Hidden Gem - What a fabulous place, a real hidden gem. Rooms are very nice, compact but very nice and the restaurant is first class. Of course it would be rude not to sample their wines!
- Marjanne (8/5): Lovely weekend get a way - Beautiful winery, delicious breakfast Rooms are small
- Thomas (10/5): Delightful stay in a property managed by a fantastic team, with excellent food and wine. - Flint Barns are in a lovely, quiet spot with beautiful surroundings. Its incredibly peaceful. The room we had was small - in a positive, cosy, way with cleverly thought through amenities and smart use of space. The team working there are incredibly warm and helpful. We stayed at the property for one night and enjoyed a lovely meal, accompanied by a bottle of the superb Rathfinny Blanc de Noirs.
- Judy (10/5): A wonderful place to escape and shed the pressures of life. - Design, and the location. The quiet and the views. We like it all very much.
- Suzanne (8/5): We stayed in the cosy double. Lovely decor, very clean & comfortable. Shower room had gorgeous products too! Enjoyed - Wow! Although we booked the cosy double, which was all that it says a cosy double! We had a fantastic stay at the Flint Barn! Truly stunning place to stay! Can’t recommend enough! Nothing to dislike.
- Angela (4/5): Perhaps owners should stay in rooms to be able to snag points various - Surrounded by vineyard Not luxurious. Very small room, hard chair, bed not amazing, heating noisy and couldn’t turn off, no milk for tea, shower products unable to squeeze out. Not enough storage in bathroom
- Cormac (10/5): Superb experience and well worth a visit - Stunning place with scenic and secluded location. Food and wine was excellent and staff were very helpful and friendly Nothing
- Philip (9/5): Superb -
- Rianne (9/5): Beautiful barn set in rolling hills and vineyard - Beautiful location set in rolling hills and vineyards. The lounge was super cosy and harvest dining room had lovely food. Amazing view down to cuckmere from the road into the barns. We loved the home grown and bottled wine! Our room was a little small, was a little tricky to manoeuvre but still decorated modern and super clean.
- Holmes-siedle (9/5): Great location and facilities for an overnight stay! - Great Breakfast (scrambled eggs) and beautiful location. Nothing - did everything I wanted it to
- Laurence (10/5): Relaxation - Everything was clean and tidy, breakfast was amazing and the staff were helpful
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mischka (10/5): I had an amazing experience -
- Gesa (9/5): Superb - Beautiful location and overall a great property. Outstanding food and wine and super lovely staff. The room was tiny and simply too hot. There is no aircon but a fan which didn't help massively.
- Nichola (9/5): Lovely location and excellent food and wine! What more could you ask for? - Great location and quiet environment, which is refreshing for city dwellers. Friendly, hardworking staff who are really helpful.
Good quality food and wine at reasonable prices in a great location! Bedroom a little small for 2 curvy women but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautifully restored barn.
Exceptional value for money!
And I would recommend fora short stay…
- Stephen (10/5): A very comfortable and stylish hotel, great facilities, a very welcoming young staff and set in an incredible location - Fantastic location, very stylish rooms, super clean and extremely comfortable No complaints at all
- Debbie (9/5): Excellent - Stunning location. In the middle of nowhere, so incredibly peaceful There is a marquee for the supper, which didn’t affect the quality of the meal, but slightly spoils the look of the building
- Ann (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rea (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful surroundings, helpful staff. Great breakfast.
- Scott (10/5): My purpose for visiting Rathfinny was walking, food and wine, have stayed a few times already and can’t wait to go again - Tranquil setting, beautiful views and the best S. Downs walks in every direction. Cosy, intimate, small scale with a family owned feeling. Nothing!
- Maxine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Susan (8/5): Very good - Views Hard to contact by phone
- Robert (10/5): Lovely. - There was a mix-up with the reservation between Booking.com and the hotel. I originally booked just the Saturday and later changes it to Friday and Saturday. However when we arrived there was no record of the Friday booking but the Saturday booking was in place. The hotel very kindly rang around and found us a room for the Friday. I can't speak too highly of the staff. To be honest it was a bit hot in the room. Not a problem for most of the year in the UK!
- Sam (10/5): Wonderful stay wonderful wine wonderful staff 10/10 - Beautifully done No sausages
- Judith (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (10/5): My stay at Rathfinny was just perfect. - Excellent accommodation in a beautiful location. The breakfast is great too!
- Kayvahn (7/5): Good -
- Elizabeth (10/5): Super place to stay, cannot recommend highly enough. - Superb location. Accommodation was of an extremely high standard. Very clean and comfortable. Excellent breakfast using local ingredients. All the staff were helpful and courteous.
- Thecla (10/5): Exceptional -
- Guy (9/5): excellent - lovely
- Andrea (8/5): Fair, but could/ should have been better. - The building, its character and welcoming feel. The guest sitting room was very comfortable and well-appointed. The views of the surrounding area were very attractive. The evening meal was excellent. The room was extremely small for two people, fine for one night, but not for any longer. We ate in a marquee the wind whipping up severe draughts. The tables did not befit the standard of the food being served and the chairs where very uncomfortable.
- Nicholas (10/5): Exceptional -
