There weren’t lifts so had to take my 20kg luggage to the 3rd floor. Staff were really friendly, toilets were generally clean. The top of bunk beds were disgustingly dirty. Dust accumulated for years probably. Ventilation on the room was poor and inside the cubicle as well making it hard to sleep
McGerby (10/5): - Toilet and shower areas are always clean. Pod gives you just the amount of privacy. Storages are enough to accommodate both personal and carry on luggages. If there's one thing I would suggest is an option to rent or have an AC or Fan in the Pod it's the only uncomfy part of staying there for me but overall everything was perfect.

I highly enjoyed that. + The staff: There were all really cool, grateful to all of them. + The decoration: How cool they've made it for an urban hostel. + The price: Very convenient. + Private bathrooms + showers. + Awesome breakfast: Highly recommend to take the added option, it had a sweet selection and the cost was great too! The cons: No elevator: If you are in the third floor like I was with a luggage, get ready to do some stairs. The above pods: If you have a place in the upper parts, you will have to climb, just to be aware. Moving toilet floor: I had the impression that floor was moving, I think it was because it was the movement of the car from the street below. Thank you for having made my trip a great one!

Verified traveler (2/5): HARD NO!!! - Everything about this hostel was awful. From the experience at check in all the way until check out. They don't tell you there is no lift, so if you have a suitcase be prepared to schlep it of several lights upstairs. The guys at the front desk were rude and uncaring. Any requests were met with rolling eyes, and they acted like it was a huge imposition. The bunk beds had zero privacy. A few were up against the wall, but the rest were in the middle of the room with no curtains. You got a single duvet, and I'd be shocked if they were washed in-between guests, no sheet was offered as a barrier. ALL showers and bathrooms are co-ed, with the exception of one toilet on each floor. When i came back from dinner one evening around 9:45, everyone in my dorm was already aleep with lights out. It made it extremely difficult to get my things out of my locker with no light, and so I didn't shower or even brush my teeth that night as I didn't want to disturb anyone, because the door was ridiculously loud. And the lockers don't have locks, so if you don't have one, you'll have to buy one from the front desk. Other hostels I've been too are locked with your keycard. If you aren't checked out by 10am, they lock you out of the room, and then you have to go all the way back downstairs to get them to unlock it, again, lots more eye-rolling, and they give you a WHOPPING extra 10 minutes before you're locked out again! Stay here if you want to be treated like you're attending Summer Camp!

Verified traveler (8/5): Good place to stay - One of the best hostels we have stayed in. We had a private room, which was large and we had plenty of room. The staff were helpful and friendly. The location was fantastic, in the middle of the city centre. Unfortunately, it is an old building and sound travels around it. Our room was next to a door and we could hear it banging closed all night as others moved around the hostel. The hostel does supply free ear plugs, which helped somewhat. That being said it isna lovely old building with some clear history.

I stayed in an 8 bed dorm and it was perfect from the view to the company. Theres a lounge area and breakfast has a great selection. Very central location and in walking distance from everything youd be doing in Edinburgh. I was extremely impressed. Thankyou kick ass hostels for a great base to recharge between hiking and touring. Ill definitely be back!
Laney (8/5): - I really enjoyed my stay at this hostel. The bed was comfy and clean, the room was spacious and updated with usb plugs for each bed. The location was top notch, near a bunch of restaurants, cafes, bars, and a supermarket. The only negative was the bathroom. There was mold growing on the ceiling in the shower areas and the walls of the toilets were covered in unknown substances by other dirty guests.
craig (10/5): A great family trip in Edinburg - Next time we visit Edinburgh, this is where we will stay. Granted: this is a Hostel, not a hotel. But... it's truly great. My grandson and I shared a private room for two. the cleanliness and security of the place are excellent. Staff are friendly. The location is unbeatable. The little square that it is on directly is very nice, with a great bar / restaurant right across the street. And it is just a few hundred meters from the Royal Mile and very convenient to the Waverly rail station so it is wasy to get to and from the airport. We had an utterly fantastic time in Edinburgh and everyone at KickAss Hostel was very friendly. The breakfast is fine. It's consistent enough from day to day that there comes a point where it's not necessarily exciting, but as breakfasts included with a stay it is far better than average. We were on our first trip to Scotland and in retrospect there are two things I would do differently. Pur basic trip was start in Edinburg, train up to Inverness, train to Glasgow, and then train back to a hotel nearer the airport the night before our flight out. I would in retrospect change two things. We stayed overnight two nights in Glasgow. That was more time then Glasgow requires IMHO. If I had to do it over again we would have just had our southern part of the stay all in Edinburgh and we would have made Glasgow a day trip. The Hostel could use a couple of more washer/dryers for laundry. But on the whole: this was just fantastic.

sarah (10/5): Perfect hostel! - First time staying in a hostel, I had a pod in a room of 16 (mixed) Pod was a lil hot at times but I took a USB powered fan which helped & was perfect for what I needed. Showers & toilets were together as I was on the 3rd floor. Always clean! No matter what time of the day I used them. Cleaner came in around 10am which was perfect if you needed that little longer in bed. Location was amazing, I was a 20 minute walk from all the locations I wanted to see! The cafe down stairs was nice to go in after a long day of sight seeing, grab a drink & chill for bit before heading up to my pod. I didn’t use the chill out area so I can’t comment but lots of people were using it. The kitchen has everything you need. You can get boxes to pop your food shop in which I thought was a nice touch. Everything you need to cook, eat & store food. Also free pool table! Only down side, which isn’t the hostels fault! People aren’t courteous of others. I’m pretty sure I had an elephant sleeping in the pod above me. They stomped around, throwing their shoes down when they got into their pod. Slamming the door when they left (doors can be close quietly coming into the room but not leaving annoyingly) every time they walked around my whole bed shook haha I found it funny once I blocked them out with ear plugs! Which you can get free from reception. Warning, 3rd floor no lift but that didn’t bothered me. Gutted these guys don’t have more hostels in & around Europe as I would happily re book with them!

The two guys at the reception were brilliant and very helpful. They welcomed me well, and I was provided a cup of coffee on my checkout although the breakfast time wasn't ready. Hoping to get back again.

Being in a closed pod made the heat worse and I heard other guests complaining about the heat as well. Also be aware: no elevator, altho a staff person when I arrived and another guest when I left helped me with my suitcase.
Hoi Kiu (10/5): Amazing experience - Great hostel with a beautiful common area. Staff was extremely friendly. The rooms and bathrooms are very stylish and clean. You get individual lockers, and charging port next to each bed with a little basket to store your devices while charging. Also a bed lamp for each bed. Met quite a few friends here and I really enjoyed my stay.

JAMES (10/5): Great Hostel. - I can't praise this hostel enough. They clean the rooms every day, everyone is as friendly as can be, both the staff and the guests. I was a tiny bit leert of the pods when I first heard about them but they were more comfortable than the beds at my last hostel and provide a great deal more privacy. I was very impressed and I would consider them next time I'm in Edinburgh.

Verified traveler (8/5): - It is v reasonably priced and has all that you would want or need from accommodation of this nature. However, i have a medical condition and wet the mattress. I could have kept quiet about the accident but told reception. I was then charged £95 for the mattress to be recleaned/replaced. I offered to clean it myself, move it to my new location in the hostel. To no avail. I will be pursuing this with management.
Verified traveler (8/5): Kick Ass @Grassmarket - Safe, clean and friendly reception staff. The location is easy to walk to top tourist spot like Edinburgh Castle and Royal Mile.

Jod (2/5): - Warning! Bedding is old, full of hair and dirt, staff is rude and aggogant. I’ve never seen a hostel so UNkempt and rude! Usually there’s a community vibe but NOT here - plus it’s super loud - no locks unless you pay. No towels unless you pay. No storage unless you pay- and the rate is ridiculously expensive. They forgot to add “in the” to the middle of their name.

Verified traveler (10/5): - As the name suggests, this hostel was KICK ASS! I had a few hours before an early flight out, so I booked a pod to relax and take a shower and wish I could have stayed longer! My pod was very comfortable, the lockers were easy to use, and everything was so clean. The bar downstairs was full of activity, and looked like a blast, although I did not join in given my tight travel schedule. I will definitely be looking into this hostel next time I'm in Edinburgh.
Verified traveler (8/5): - I enjoyed how the bar was exclusive for guests of the hostel, great vibe and staff. Rooms were big and clean with individual charging points for each guest. My room had a beautiful view of Edinburgh castle. The bathrooms were clean regularly, however having coed bathrooms can cause them to become messy quickly, we all know how gross some people can be. Plenty of secure luggage storage near reception to leave bags pre and post stay- only £1 after your stay. Very centrally located within walking distance to everything. Different activities ran by the hotel every night.
Simone (8/5): Best hostel I’ve stayed in, love the pods! - I’ve stayed in a few hostels in Scotland but this was by far the best. Good location with shops and bars nearby, around 10-15 minutes walk from the train station, with nice views of the castle. There’s also a lovely cat cafe nearby. Friendly staff, convenient facilities including laundry, kitchen, and luggage storage lockers, plenty of activities going on for those who want to meet other people, and as a bonus you get a discount in the hostel’s bar and restaurant. Everywhere looked very clean and tidy. I stayed in a pod which was perfect for having a bit of privacy and personal space. Between the secure storage locker and the clothes hooks and rail within the pod, I had enough space for all my stuff. The mood lighting in the pod was a nice touch, I had fun playing around with it. The toilets and showers are in individual cubicles which is also good for privacy. The only criticism I have is that the pod was warm and stuffy, even though the weather wasn’t overly hot. If there could have been a small fan or air con or something in the pod, that would have been awesome. But otherwise a great place and have already recommended it to others, and I would stay there again for sure.

Bar is lovely n plentg of organised activities. I would only suggest tgat they add a ceileigh tour as well since i hearf that other hostels do that

tien l (10/5): Nice place, will be back! - Stayed here before, like it here so I'm back again. private pod is great, spacious and give you extra privacy. Right in the city centre near the castle but please be prepared to walk some stairs to get there
Steven (10/5): Rugby Weekend - A friend and I were staying in Edinburgh for a rugby weekend. It's the second time I've stayed at Kick Ass Hostel for the same reason. Great staff, ambiance and superb location. I woke up late the day I was leaving and they were very pleasant and no fuss about late check out. Can't go wrong
Devon (10/5): Cool private pods - Awesome Pods! So much better than Bunks. Only issue is Wifi reception was spotty at my bed.
Camila (10/5): - The place is very central, with nice friendly staff, the room is quite spacious and quiet. Good size locker in the room and also for usage after checkout, if needed. Kitchen very well served and organized, bathroom was very clean too. Only 'complaint' was regarding the internet: they change passwords every day so you have to get downstairs to get the updated one even if you are staying longer in bed! :)
