Guest Reviews

- budi santosa (8/5): - the environment was excellent need renewal

- Kathryn (9/5): Forest hotel with lovely breakfasts. - Beautifully presented breakfasts, lots of care taken over them to showcase different Japanese dishes. A quiet hotel with spacious rooms. The onsen was spotless and quiet- really relaxing. No complaints. You would benefit from having a car due to the hotel's location but a shuttle service to/from the station is provided.
- Frans55 (8/5): - Iedere avond top gastronomisch dinner
Gratis shuttle service smorgens en ‘s avonds
Vriendelijk personeel Geen brood smorgens

- Barbara (10/5): A quiet, convenient and lovely hotel. - A lovely hotel with exceptional staff. They were very helpful and attentive to our needs. The meals that we reserved ahead of time were delicious and beautifully presented. The shuttle service was perfect for our needs from the Kiso-Fukushima station to the hotel.
We were hiking the Nakasendo Trail, and it was great to stay here. We left our luggage at the station lockers , as we were heading to Kyoto after our hike. It was perfect for our needs.
- lesley (9/5): Staff were lovely and very helpful - Lovely location in the forest a few km out of town.
Japanese dinner and breakfast were great. Important to either book dinner in the hotel or eat before arrival as no other food available if not pre booked and you are a long way from any other restaurant.
- Jennifer (8/5): Great food. Location out of the way - The food was the standout win here. Dinner was an amazing 6 course plus of just stunning food and breakfast was the same. And the entire map came with a drawing of what everything was etc. excellent quality Hotel is a little dated and location is not the best as it’s a good way from the station. If these don’t matter to you then you will appreciate the great food offering here
- TheoGardner (8/5): - Sauna and onsen were amazing, rooms were very comfortable and overall the hotel had a lot of old school charm. Dinner is expensive and they dont allow you to bring food back, plus they only offer shuttles from kiso fukushima as late as 5.30, meaning you are forced to have a very early dinner if you dont want to have theirs.

- Jan (7/5): A bit more run down than retro, but enjoyed our stay, especially the food and forest sauna. - Great location, loved the forest sauna, lovely staff, great food. Stained carpet in hallways, bit run down.
- Cheang (10/5): Very nice - Very nice outdoor sauna. Great experience of the traditional Japanese meals. Nothing
- Julia (8/5): -
- Daniel (8/5): - They could benefit from adding another matress, as well as well as insulate the windows a bit more as it got very cold during night time.
- Martin (7/5): Fun place to stay if you are walking the Nakasendo. - Very good set dinner and breakfast. Public area was a bit Cold
- Shai (8/5): - Bathhouse especially the outside was amazing. The restaurant was not very good. Both dinner and breakfast were not as we expected.
- Raymond (6/5): Overall a good stay, having bought our own dinner and breakfast after the first day - The hotel was good and staff were excellent but prior to arrival, we were rather put off by their curt responses with regard to some questions that we had. Located 20mins drive away from the Kiso-Fukushima station, the hotel capitalises on its remote location to charge exorbitantly for its dinner (¥6,600 no selection of menu) and breakfast (¥2,200). We suggest you buy dinner from the friendly elderly couple running a restaurant directly across from the train station before heading back to the hotel.
- Stella (7/5): -
- John (9/5): - We stayed for 2 nights. The Hotel provides great facilities, very relieving to have the onset. Pick up and drop off to the railway station is provided free on charge. The staff are extremely helpful particularly the manager and Naoko and Akane in the restaurant. The rooms are large and comfortable. Meals were traditional in style and size. I would certainly stay again and recommend for travellers in Kiso-Fukushima or Nakasando trail to stay. There is nothing we would say we did not like.
- Adam (9/5): - Sauna
Onsen
- Robert (9/5): Fantastic place! - Amazing sauna experience! Very fun games to pass the time in the lobby, traditional layout very nice. Very authentic! Morning breakfast was also incredible!
- pini (6/5): - Room size
- serenag91 (10/5): 5 star service - we didn’t get to experience their amazing Japanese only breakfast as we were trying to leave early to catch the bus ride to another place. Hotel managed to make amazing changes for our meals and very accommodative and definitely would come back again.
Even when we left in the morning, our car screen was frozen, we got hot water from the hotel staff!
Exceptional service. Maybe towels to be provided at the onset would be ideal
- Lauren (8/5): - Sauna was delightful in the afternoon. The bath was clean and large. We enjoyed our stay here very much. Dinner was particularly good (the shabu shabu meat was high quality). The place is a bit older but it adds to the charm. Sauna hours very limited during daylight so you don't have much time to enjoy before the sun sets (missing out on the forest view). The optipn to sauna in the morning would have been very nice. Bath also very limited hour in the morning (before breakfast only for about an hour) so use the facilities the night before. Very limited outdoor furniture, there was a mouldy hammock (one only) and 4 plastic chairs so sitting outside to enjoy the night sky not really a great option. Not exactly like the pictures.
- Vivian (7/5): A nice place in this category - Considering that it’s a traditional Japanese inn, we liked the place very much, especially for the staff and the onsen The futons are not really comfortable for westerners. I had to pile 2 together in order to sleep more comfortably.
- Rihards (9/5): -

- TASHI (8/5): -
- Johanna (6/5): - Nice onsen and shower, pickup service went well, surroundedby beautiful forest Staff barely spoke English, the building is a bit older and not maintained very well, no one was at the reception at specified time
- rosemary (9/5): -
- Ricky (7/5): Quiet but inconvenient stay - I did not reserve meals with my hotel booking, was unable to eat in the hotel restaurant and had to look for restaurants outside that is limited and some distance away.
- Michèle (10/5): Un must !
Rien !
- Bertrand (10/5): - Très bon hotel propre et bien situé. Très bon rapport qualité/prix !
- Suzanne (10/5): - A chilled space with gorgeous food and very accommodating staff.
- Pauline (8/5): Enjoyable stay - Stunning location. It is isolated but they provided a shuttle bus. The food was plentiful and authentic. The hot bath was a bonus The rooms were a bit dated but not a big deal. It would have been good to have one English Channel on the TV
- Reinhard (8/5): Very good -
- Russ (8/5): I would return in a heartbeat - Room size was rally good, on site ohnsen, quiet location in natural surroundings, full Japanese food experience, excellent staff, The futons could have been a little thicker.
- Nader (8/5): Very good -
- Shion (9/5): Superb - The staff in the hotel were all friendly and helpful. We only stayed for one night, however we were able to spend plenty of time in the bath after our arrival. The room and bathroom were very clean and well equipped. The breakfast was fantastic and we were left very full. We were happy that there was a shuttle bus to take us to and from the station as it would have been a little far to walk. Thank you :)
- Auben (4/5): Poor value for money, unclean, nice staff - The sauna was amazing and brand new, but was poorly lit at night- making it feel slightly unsafe. The shuttle bus driver was lovely and offered to drop us straight to our restaurant instead of the station. There were stains all over the carpet and walls in both the shared areas and in our room- we are not fussy people and we found it disgusting.
Additionally, the shuttle bus timing for the evening was nonsensical when considering the train timetable- the last shuttle bus is 5:30 despite the nearest train arrivals to that being 3pm and 6pm. Because dinner at the hotel is so expensive and there are no other restaurants nearby, this means that to have dinner in Kiso Fukushima at a reasonable hour (considering most restaurants only open at 5pm!!) you have to pay ¥4000 for a taxi to the hotel as the shuttle bus does not run after 5:30. Please reconsider this and provide a later shuttle bus as it seriously impacted our stay.
- Tom (7/5): Good -
- Leonard (7/5): Good -
- Rachel (8/5): - xxx
- Noga (7/5): Good -
- Ajmangubat (8/5): Surprising stay with good food. - We really liked the service, the hotel staff were really accommodating and answered many of our questions. We also enjoyed the size of the room, it was large and comfortable for a family of 3. It had all the amenities that we needed and it was a good place to stay and rest. The food was remarkable, we did not expect our dining experience to be filled with a lot of good food and the portions were generous. The hotel looks a bit dated already, having been built around the 90s so it is starting to look its age. The location is a bit way off from the main road, so something to consider, especially when traveling in the evening. Other than that, the hotel was good enough for the price that we paid for.
- Ari (8/5): Very good - Overall was nice. Nice and clean room
Was a little wierd that we couldn't order dinner at night (we checked in on 2000 and were hungry) but they do sell some candy and ramen so we were good
- Martin (10/5): Awesome Onsen - I stayed as a mid-way point through Nakasendo.
I have nothing but praise for this hotel.
They picked me up at the station due to extremely heavy rain without me giving them prior notice which was appreciated. I would’ve frozen otherwise… 😂
The room is beautifully traditional but the highlight is definitely the outdoor spa sauna complex. Amazing!
- Ilan (8/5): Very good - Breakfast was excellent! Japanese style, and perfectly made.
The room was big and spacious. The night staff did not understand English, but she was nice and explained well
The decorations in the room are very, very old fashioned. The onsen was poor.
- Mi (9/5): A great rural Japanese style stay - We stayed in the Japanese style room . Loved the super helpful staff, clean facilities in a countryside location with adequate punctual and sufficiently frequent shuttle bus options. We really enjoyed trying the onsen and the dinner and breakfasts. were great and beautifully presented. All in all a great Japanese style stay. Dinner and breakfast were a wonderful experience, however the price racks up relative to the accommodation price and this is not apparent when you book. Budget a bit more for it as it's worth it.
- Edward (7/5): Good - The staff are very helpful and kind. The shuttle bus service was good. I wish there were a few more shuttle bus time options beyond 5:30pm.
- Sagi (5/5): Passable -
- Devin (3/5): Okay for a short stay, but the food, staff and facilities were mediocre to be honest. -
- Jahn-takeshi (7/5): Good -
- Paul (9/5): Superb - Dinner and breakfast were excellent. Bath was very good.
- JaninedeP (6/5): Very disappointed. This hotel is in desperate need of a makeover. - To be honest, this was the most disappointing place we stayed in our entire time in Japan. It seemed to be a mixture of a Japanese hotel with some Barvarian touches?? Weirdly out of context! So tired and desperate in need of some sprucing up. Awful thin old brown towels. Our rooms were dark and dismal. No one made up our beds as in previous hotels. The onsen was awful. Basically just a big indoor bath instead of taking advantage of the incredible Mountain Views. The carpet was filthy and stained and all furniture was really old fashioned and worn. Desperately needed a makeover. The one positive was the food. Delicious and beautifully presented. No staff spoke English
- Ayesha (8/5): Great service and meals! - Staff were very helpful and friendly. we really appreciated the shuttle service to and from the station. The meals and service were great. beautiful location in the forest! My bed was rather uncomfortable and I think needs replacement. Otherwise, a great stay.
- Maximilian (7/5): Good - Friendly staff. Good food. Nice and clean rooms and Bath. Free Shuttle service from and to Kiso-Fukushima train station. The hotel is quite a bit outside Kiso-Fukushima. They do offer a free shuttle service (mornings to town;afternoon to hotel), but you need to plan that in as you have to reserve the shuttle in advance.
- Aidan (8/5): Very good -
- Chuang (10/5): - Free coffee and nice lobby for all guest
- Donald W (10/5): - Short comfortable stay night before climbing Ontake-san. The front desk was very helpful with providing information about taxi to the trailhead .
- SuMaJo (10/5): Relaxing hotel with wonderful Japanese food - We found this hotel when looking for somewhere to stay close to the mountains and the hiking trails along Old Nakasendo, such as Magome to Tsumago and the Torii pass.
The rooms were clean and had everything we needed, although the interior feels a bit outdated.
The lobby offered comfortable seats to relax together, some board games, and a machine with free hot and cold drinks.
Both dinner and breakfast was included and served as a Japanes style multi course menu. This was a wonderful experience and something we really enjoyed! Our host was very helpful by introducing the dishes and explaining how and in what order to eat them.
We also enjoyed the complimentary hot baths, which work similar to every other onsen we visited in Japan. This was a great way to relax in the afternoon after the hike.
The hotel is a 15 minute drive from Kiso-Fukushima station (where all local and express trains stop). The complimentary hotel shuttle bus made it easy to get to the station in the morning and back to the hotel in the afternoon.
If you already have your hiking boots on, it is also possible to walk to the hotel via a beautiful scenic road from the local train station Harano in around 60 minutes.
The hotel staff was great, very friendly, and doing everything to make our stay comfortable despite not everyone being fluent in English.
For example, on our way to the station the shuttle bus driver noticed that there was a youth sumo wrestling competition held in a large tent along the road, and stopped for a few minutes to give us a chance to enjoy it.
- Susan (3/5): Hard to believe the price they charge for a 1980s set up - This hotel would be inconvenient for any travelers without a car. Despite the room being twice the normal size, it was very dated “retro”. The AC in the room only had two speeds, full or nothing. Full sounded like there was a helicopter in the room and was impossible to sleep. Without it, it was too hot.
- Irit (10/5): great stay with an excelelnt breakfast. loved it. - great location, nice rooms, clean, loved the onsen, excellent breakfast.
We enjoyed our stay. Perfect for Kiso Valley travellers
rooms, onsen, breakfast.
Nice location in the nature.
large and generous Japanese breakfast with a special dish for children.
Loved the nice Yukata selection.
- Tung Ticiann (8/5): -
- Bruce (8/5): Very good -
- Stephen (7/5): Good -
- Rebecca (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hanne (9/5): Spacious room and excellent food - We stayed here for one night, and it was really pleasant! We were picked up by the hotel's shuttle service from the train-station, which went smoothly. The room (japanese style), was really spacious! Staff were very helpful and friendly, and dinner and breakfast were excellent. I requested gluten-free meals and they were able to accomodate, which we greatly appreciated! There isn't too much to see around the hotel grounds, but we stayed here on our way along the Nakasendo, and it was a nice stay!
- Tobias (10/5): Friendly, delicious - highly recommended! - Lovely staff, great food, comfortable room - perfect place near Kiso! Staff went above and beyond to help
- Raz (8/5): Very good -
