Guest Reviews
- Sandra (10/5): Excellent stay! - Superb location for the Wyeside Arts Centre, the reason for or visit. Plenty of parking at rear. Quirky building, full of character and beautifully kept. Excellent breakfast, lots of choice. Lovely welcome by our hosts Jo and Ian, delightful to chat to.
- Barbara (9/5): -
- Hall (6/5): Needs improving - The location was excellent. The quirkiness of the building was a good talking point. The passive aggressive quiet posters all over the place. The mattress was very hard which made sleeping difficult.
The breakfast quantities could have been better. The hosts while pleasant, need to not have discussions about visitors in their hearing.
The price was on the high side for the facilities on offer
- Roger (8/5): -
- Roger (8/5): Very enjoyable - Central, clean , kept in good order Rules , perhaps a little Draconial
- ALEXEY (9/5): - Хорошие номера, удобная парковка. Дом удачно расположен- все в шаговой доступности. Хороший завтрак.
Приветливые хозяева. все понравилось
- Kendrick (9/5): Very friendly hosts. - Delicious breakfast.
- Sharon (8/5): Lovely B&B centrally located with friendly hosts and a great breakfast. - Great breakfast, centrally located, onsite parking, friendly hosts, easy access to Feast - best restaurant in town. Nothing!
- Gordon (10/5): - Fantastic hosts with a lovely old quaint property. Nothing
- David (9/5): Good value stay in an interesting building hosted by nice people. - The breakfast was very good - excellent bacon too unlike some of the cardboard that you often get. Good central location and excellent private parking. Ian and Jo were very friendly and helpful as well.
- Trickett (10/5): A real home from home - Jo and Ian were fantastic hosts, friendly, helpful and excellent company. I also had the pleasure of attending a gig performed by Ian and friends in a nearby town on the last day of my stay. The Owls is in a great location and has lots of charm. Clean, comfortable and an excellent breakfast. A real gem of a traditional B and B. Nothing
- Dawn (10/5): Great little short break away. - We loved how old and quirky the building was. Being right in the town centre, you are within walking distance of cafes, pubs and restaurants, and with really nice walks along the river, and and you can join the route on the Wye Valley Walk. We normally stay in chain accommodation or Airbnb, so it was great to experience this lovely B&B and enjoy a more personable stay. Our room was comfortable and clean, the breakfasts were tasty, lots of choices on the menu that you hand in the night before, and served fresh to order. Jo and Ian were super hosts, great to chat with and very informative about things to do around the area. We would definitely stay again when visiting Builth Wells. There wasn’t anything not to like.
- Elaine (8/5): Location and building good, breakfast and staff let it down. - Location was excellent. Room was clean and comfortable. Shower was great. Breakfast was chaotic and unorganised despite ordering the previous night.
Food was a mixed quality. Porridge ands granola very poor. The cooked food was okay.
Staff were difficult with breakfast ordering.
- Kerry (8/5): Pleasant and well looked after. Thank you. - Its location, the room was comfortable and spotless. Breakfast was cooked to order and very good. Good car parking facilities. Nothing that I didn’t like.
- David (9/5): - Ian and Jo were excellent hosts and nothing is too much trouble to both of them.
- Picton (10/5): Returning again can’t wait! Aiming for July - Everything from the breakfast to comfort of the room Wouldnt change it
- Carol (10/5): -
- Matjaz (9/5): All was OK for me. - Breakfast was good, room clean.
- Lisa (9/5): -
- Rhian (4/5): Poor value for money - The property is clean Too many notices about rules an behaviour
The shower was tiny and toiletries left on shelf close to toilet
Quality of breakfast was reasonable, portions were small and no offer of extra tea or toast. Upcharge for any extra items

- sharma (9/5): Lovely place to stay in the centre of town and really nice hosts. Would recommend! - location was great - easy to find, lots of space to park and yet central. Lovely building, room and hosts - very comfortable.
Nice breakfast they did for me, late as well. All great - thank you
- Liam (10/5): -
- Leslie (9/5): Good location for the showground - Good car park, room clean and bed very comfortable Very small TV
- Michael (9/5): Lovely stay and will definitely book again if i am back in the area - Very clean . The owners were very friendly . Good location in the town centre and a lovely breakfast
- Danica (3/5): Spartan and depressing. - Short walk to bus station I have been travelling for more than a month, mainly staying in BBs costing less than 75GBP per night. Most places have been beautiful and spacious, set up for guest comfort. This place was a tiny room that basically fit a bed. It was fit for sleeping, but offered zero comfort for just reading a book. The chair was a wooden chair. The view was miserable. The shower/toilet was down the hall and I literally could not fathom how to shower and then get back to the room with no bathrobe offered ( standard in other BBs with bathroom down the hall), and nowhere to put clothes and whatnot in the bathroom - which would have me wrapping myself in the only towel to move down a common hallway. There was no shelf or nightstand near the bed on which to keep my glasses and phone or a glass of water. The room felt like a gray prison cell. It wasn’t worth more than 40GBP based on what I have gotten for 50-75 elsewhere in the UK. There was no guest lounge for relaxing with a good book. I chose to abandon the place and lose 145GBP to stay elsewhere rather than stay for the nights paid for — that was how substandard it was to me, a retiree on her final walking trip to the UK. Zero charm, zero comfort, zero fitness for spending time relaxing in one’s room with a good book after a long walk.
- Elizabeth (10/5): Cozy and welcoming stay at The Owls in Builth Wells Wales - The Owls is centrally located on the picturesque high street. Five pubs, an upscale restaurant, cafes, bakery, drug store are all within a 5 minute walk of The Owls. Our room was cozy and the food was fabulous. We were treated to home made welsh cakes and homemade black current jam. Our hosts, Jo and Ian were absolutely lovely. They were very kind and very helpful. A very interesting couple. I wouldn’t change anything. The building is quirky but that is part of its charm. Jo and Ian were wonderful and so was our breakfast each morning. We arrived by train and Jo put us in touch with the gentleman who operates the local taxi.
- SistaGirl (9/5): Great location and breakfast. - Good sized rooms in a heritage building. Shops and restaurants are very close by. We had a great breakfast at The Owls. As the building is old the floors aren't level but we found that quite quirky.
- Goodall (10/5): -
- Elsa Eriksen (8/5): - Joe and Ian er veldig hyggelige. Alt var veldig rent og pent. Noe trangt rom og bratte, smale trapper gjorde koffertbæring litt utfordrende.
- Caroline (6/5): - A quaint and quirky b&b. Very central but the room was quiet at the back. Parking on site. The room had everything required for a comfy night's sleep. A very comfortable bed and pillows. Hosts very friendly and informative. The breakfast was good, catered for vegans and gluten free, freshly cooked. You do have to order the night before to ensure freshness. My bathroom was not in the room, which was not a problem, but there was no sink in the bathroom to wash hands after using the toilet
- Chris (10/5): All round excellent. - The Hosts Ian & Jo were very friendly, went out of there way to ensure everything was to our satisfaction. They knew the area so were able to help with places to visit and directions on how to get there. They also advised on places to eat in the evening.
The breakfast was excellent and deserves a special mention. Nothing
- Alyson (8/5): Very comfortable stay. All needs catered for. - Clean, friendly welcome, excellent parking, great breakfast. Nothing
- Stewart (6/5): -
- Adrian (8/5): Quirky but nice - The owners were friendly and very accommodating Nothing really, everything was very acceptable
- Rosemary (10/5): A very enjoyable experience - Centrally located in the charming town of Builth Wells, this property was quiet and peaceful. The bed was very comfortable, the room was small, but contained everything you’d need. The hosts were friendly, without being pushy. Breakfast (pre-ordered the previous night) was very nice. Nothing
- Mike (10/5): Great B&B - Don’t pass this one by. - Friendly, Welcoming, plenty of private car parking and a good breakfast to start the day of. All in a Lovely old building located in the High Street of Builth Wells.
2nd stay here and will be using again in the future.
- Doug (6/5): Quaint old bed and breakfast well located and clean and tidy with friendly owners - The location and owners were great Unfortunately we struck a very hot day/night the accommodation like most is set up for the cold so a hot night had
- Sinead (6/5): Pleasant -

- Barbara (7/5): Welcoming and helpful hosts. - Breakfast was tasty but not quite enough
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional - Very comfortable stay. Stayed for one night whilst on a motorcycle tour. Good parking at the back of the property. The owners are very welcoming and our room was extremely clean and comfortable. Excellent breakfast in the morning. Nothing to dislike.
- Isobel (8/5): Interesting and interested hosts. Would recommend! 😊 - Central location, off road parking, great shower & comfy bed/linen. Peppermint tea in room would be lovely.

Parking very good. Nothing.
- John (7/5): Good -
- Andrew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Irene (9/5): Superb - Nice friendly welcome to a clean and very homely accommodation
Assessable from the main door fronting the high street and also the convenient rear car park. Nothing not to like!
There are a few steps to accomplish which maybe a concern, however they are a shallow rise and fairly easy with plenty of handrails nearby.
- Michelle (9/5): Thank you for a lovely stay. - The Owls is in a very central location, nice and quirky, and was very comfortable. Ian and Jo made us very welcome and the breakfast was delicious. We also had parking for a touring motorcycle. Thank you for a lovely stay.
- Edward (8/5): Very good -
- Susan (6/5): Pleasant - Location. Excellent.
Staff. Outstanding
Parking. Excellent
Breakfast. Excellent
- Ro (9/5): Superb - Lovely building. Safe bike shed. Thoughtful food recommendations. Location very central but quiet. I liked the room. Friendly owners.
- Rod (9/5): Superb -
- Glynwen (10/5): Exceptional - The property had lots of character and was very comfortable. Jo and Ian were very welcoming and always had time for a chat. The parking was good, we were very pleased and looking for to visiting again in July.
- Kathryn (9/5): A gem - Very comfortable bed and great pillows! Helpful friendly owners. Fantastic sound proof windows - on the main street but no traffic noise! Personalised breakfast. Historic building with beautiful woodwork. Well loved premises with tasteful decoration and furnishings. Builth wells is looking tired now, but is still a pleasant mid Wales stop. The Owls was a delightful find.
- Deborah (8/5): A very good overnight stay experience. - Excellent breakfast cooked to order.
Small but clean and comfortable room.
Very central location with own car park. There were three flights of stairs but this can be expected in such an old house and there was a warning of these when booking.
- Gus (8/5): Very good -
- Tom (10/5): We were a group of 5 friends on motorcycles, the owners were friendly and polite, we had a good stay and will stay again - It’s an old quirky property but well maintained and clean. My bed was on a bit of a slope so I did put the pillow the opposite end and slept well. Location is great, in middle of town with plenty of pubs and restaurants about but couldn’t hear any outside noise from our room which was on the front of property. Ample safe parking.
- Scott (9/5): Classic guesthouse in the heart of the village - The Owls is a classic guesthouse right in the centre of Builth Wells. The friendly hosts were very welcoming and locked our touring bicycles in their backyard shed. Our bed was comfy, the hot water good, the wifi OK, and the included full Welsh Breakfast was excellent. We'd stay here again. It was all good.
- Jones (8/5): Very good -
- Robert (8/5): Very good - Location is perfect for the centre of town. Quirky old building which is immaculate. Very nice owners.
- Sandra (10/5): Will definitely stay again - Good old fashioned B&B lovely hosts, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Nothing
- Cloudyit (9/5): Superb -
- Christine (8/5): Very good - Good breakfast, lovely porridge, plenty of choice, central location in town Nothing
- Grant (10/5): Home from home - Beautiful breakfast and great friendly hosts. The place was so clean and felt very welcoming Nothing to dislike
- Paul (10/5): Lovely place, lovely people. - Lovely, friendly and helpful owners.
Quirky building, in a good way. Definitely not your Travel Lodge experience, in a very good way.
Fabulous breakfast. Nothing.
- Mark (10/5): Fantastic place, full of character, superb hosts Jo and Ian, pleasure to meet them, highly reccomend - Fantastic breakfast, freshly cooked, could not get a better location.
- Russell (7/5): Good - Great room with a very comfortable bed in a good location in Hay. Little dear for a solo traveller but probably paid for 2.
- Paul (8/5): Very good -
- Jillian (10/5): Will definitely be coming back! - A lovely friendly place. Such a great vibe. Absolutely spotless room, Jo and Ian were wonderfully informative.
- Sydney (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent breakfast with many options! Stairs were a little tricky inside and outside ramp to car a little slippery.
- Tom (8/5): A comfortable stay in an ideal location for high street access. - Location was perfect for accessing a restaurant on the evening for something to eat. Near to the job which was helpful too.
Comfortable rooms. It's not a case of didn't like, on the evening we were asked to request certain items for breakfasr the next morning, however, some items that were requested were missing from the breakfast. This was fine though, we didn't mind, it may bother others more.
- Duncan (9/5): Superb -
- Carolina (9/5): Comfortable stay in convenient location. - Breakfast was lovely and the location was perfect for us. Comfortable stay with great facilities
- Alison (8/5): Very good - Comfortable bed and good room soundproofing from the road No instructions provided ahead of time where to park, this would be useful for any first time visitors. We arrived shortly after 6pm to check in and the building was locked up with the lights off for the evening. Breakfast served only until 8.45am with check out by 10am at a weekend. We personally felt this was too early compared to most average check outs to be at least 11am nowadays. Whilst we would have liked to sample breakfast, the time was just too much of an early start for us on our holiday.
- Roy (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent breakfast, good location for our needs. Everything was very good.
- Michael (10/5): Brilliant - Food good Nothing
- Lindsay (8/5): Very good - The house is gorgeous. Breakfast was plentiful and served hot. I know the room was a little small but somewhere to hang my jacket and trousers would have helped
- Jones (9/5): Superb - everything. nothing
- Donald (9/5): Superb -
- David (10/5): Great people and great service - Great location in a lovely town. Good sized rooms and great welcome from the hosts, The local pubs were not great for evening meals.
- Owen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Susan (10/5): Four of us stayed for 2 nights .very friendly hosts ..will be back again soon - Fab breakfast comfortable rooms. Great location excellent parking spaces
- Roger (9/5): A very pleasant and comfortable B + B. - Location is good, bedroom was clean and compact. Ideal for one, but a bit small for 2.
Breakfast was good, and could have ordered extra if I wanted more.
Hosts were very friendly. Only a minor point is that with the small shower, a shelf for shampoo / soap would be a useful addition as bending down in the confined space was a bit difficult with a stiff back.
- Anthony (9/5): Superb -
- Stephen (8/5): Very good -
- Shane (10/5): No issues everything was perfect 👌 - Fabulous B&B very clean and tidy, friendly staff, fantastic breakfast and most of all secure bicycle parking, thank you The Owls
- Atkinson (10/5): Exceptional -
- Steve (8/5): Very good -
- James (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrew (9/5): Well located, friendly and accommodating. Recommended. - Hosts, Ian and Jo were welcoming, helpful and served an excellent breakfast. The room was clean, comfortable and had tea/coffee.
I was travelling by bike and they offered secure bike storage in a locked shed. The hotel is directly on Nation Cycle Route #8 (goes past the front door) so a great option on a trip through Wales. The hotel is within a minutes walk of pub and restaurant options. Recommended.
- Angela (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lorna (10/5): Very friendly and comfortable stay - Perfect location on high street, breakfast was lovely and happy to help with dietary requirements
- Angeline (10/5): Comfortable friendly B&B - Central convenient location, quirky building, warm hospitality, quality breakfast with homemade ingredients, really helpful with my bicycle, with storage and even facilities for washing it.
- Olaniyi (10/5): Best weekend we’ve had in a while, loved it - If you ever want a hotel that treats you like royalty, the owl is the best place to stay in Wales. The breakfast was absolutely incredible, the bed was super comfy and don’t even get me started on the shower pressure. The hosts were more than amazing, it’s 11/10 for me and my partner.
- Leighton (8/5): Warm welcome, bright and comfortable room with great breakfast. - Wonderfully quirky and very central Comfortable and quiet
- Jackie (9/5): Superb -
- Mike (10/5): Nice B&B and location - Convenient location, friendly owners, ample private parking. Great breakfast
- Deborah (9/5): A great find - would highly recommend. - Very friendly welcome from Jo & Ian. As they said their B&B is quirky, but it suited us completely. On site private parking at rear of building. The breakfast was great - local produce and excellent homemade Welsh cakes! Can't think of anything on our part! Wouldn't suit people with mobility problems - stairs.
