Guest Reviews
- Louis (9/5): Cosy Kanazawa Homestay - Super friendly and helpful host! Spotlessly clean room and facilities. Location is in downtown Kanazawa, but no more than a twenty minute stroll to all the sights or 2 mins to share bike parking. Supermarket and convenience stores 5 minutes away, and izakayas just round the corner. You are living in someone's house, so the accomodation is intimate and on the smaller size, but considering price and location, this is great value for money, especially if you are a solo traveller looking to experience Kanazawa as it really is. This is basic accommodation, don't be fooled,, but it is done really well. Nothing! I have had traditional futons at home so find them comfy, but first timers might struggle with sleeping on a firmer surface.

- Ana (10/5): Felt like home - Oh my this was the highlight of my Japan trip. I felt like at home. I remember when I booked it I was already excited haha. Soku-san is very very kind and his wife as well. I arrive in Kanazawa at 6 in the morning and he said it was fine and I could do the check in soon so I arrive before 8 and he already had my room prepared. I love GAO so much I miss him everyday!
The room was very big and comfortable, very beautiful house. Also it was just 7 minutes walking from the Higashi Chaya District and 20 minutes from the station and the castle and garden. The location is perfect, super calm neighborhood. I loved Kanazawa a lot as well.
Thank you so so much for taking care of me and being so kind! I would love to come again next time I visit!

- Ishikawa (10/5): -
- Sergey (10/5): - A small, cozy place in a peaceful location near Kanazawa's main tourist attractions. It's only a two-minute walk from the Right Loop bus stop. The host is kind, and there's an adorable, friendly dog. While it is not ideal for those seeking classic hotel-type amenities, it's perfect for experiencing the traditional Japanese way of life. The toilet and shower are shared but clean, modern, and comfortable.

- Huet (10/5): -
- Ricco (7/5): Good - - sweet and kind host and dog
- clean - the futon bed was rather thin and not too comfortable
- the dog was kept in a cage for most of the times. he let Gao out from time to time and also went for a walk with him, but it still weirded me out and and made me uncomfortable.
- Sophia (10/5): Exceptional - i loved how friendly Soka was! And the place was so nice and accommodating
- Iikka (10/5): Exceptional - Great place to stay. The room was clean and comfy with traditional tatami flooring and a futon. Tried the breakfast once, it was tasty and only 300 yen. The coin washing machine and dryer were handy. The owners are very friendly. Also quite close to the Higashi Chaya teahouse district and a walking distance from the city centre. There was also a bus stop nearby. Quite thin walls, but this wasn't really an issue during the night.
- Vinh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alliah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rachel (10/5): Exceptional - I really enjoyed my stay here! The couple hosting were so kind and welcoming, and their dog Gao was absolutely adorable. The location was convenient for getting around, and overall it was a great experience. Would definitely recommend!
- Kathryn (10/5): Lovely Japanese home stay - Wonderful location - we walked everywhere: geisha district, restaurants train station etc. Lovely simple breakfast. Very kind hosts. And GAoo the doggo was very well behaved. Nothing - it was an older style home. Accomodation on 2nd floor. Homestay experience. Tatami mat was a bit uncomfortable- but my grandson gave me his 2nd layer and ended up perfect and snug.
- Jan (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing stay in Kanazawa - super friendly owner, great location and Gao is super cute.
- Dominik (10/5): Great - The owner was super nice
Location was great
Everything was clean
And the dog Gao is super cute
- Amanda (10/5): Exceptional - This is a great place If you want to experience staying in a Japanese family home! The owners are very nice and helpful, also everything is clean and there is arconditioning in the room. Gaao is lovely! Location is great, you can reach everything by foot. I recommend it!
- Jane (9/5): Great stay near to Kanazawa Geisha district - Hosts were super friendly. Location for RL3 bus stop was perfect! Breakfast was great VFM. Tatami beds very comfortable. Gao the dog was gorgeous! Stairs were rather steep.
- Gergely (9/5): Superb -
- Kersten (9/5): Fantastic hosts and location - Phenomenal location. The hosts were great and the twin room was comfortable. Breakfast was simple but tasty. It was really pleasant! The house only has one bathroom so you can be sharing with up to 6 people. We never had to wait too long. The people in the room next to us always came home pretty late (1-2am) and the walls were thin so it woke us up.
- Poppy (10/5): Lovely hosts, thank you for your kindness -
- Hannah (10/5): Warm and hospitable share house is a perfect base for exploring beautiful historic Kanazawa. - My sister and I really enjoyed our stay at the share house! It was perfect as a base for exploring Kanazawa. The immediate area around the house was fascinating, with beautiful old houses and shrines around every corner.
The room we were provided was spacious and the amenities clean and convenient. We really appreciated the warmth and hospitality of our hosts throughout our short stay. And of course, Gao was super cute!
We would definitely return to Share House Gaooo and beautiful Kanazawa! We liked everything, no complaints.
- Joss (9/5): I really enjoyed my stay - The location was within 15-20 minutes walking distance of main sights and close to the bus stop from Kanazawa station
The couple are very warm and welcoming and helpful.
There’s a lovely family atmosphere.
- Joss (9/5): I would recommend GAOoo to anyone provided they didn’t have mobility issues people - Breakfast was simple. I ate a 2nd breakfast an hour later.
The couple who own and run Gaooo are warm, hospitable, helpful and kind.
The guesthouse is homely and a lovely place to stay.
The room was lovely, large and decorated with traditional furniture The stairs are very steep to the bedroom and Shoku kindly took my heavy suitcase up for me.
- Agneta (10/5): Wonderful, comfortable, authentic, and truly memorable guesthouse run by the best Japanese couple - Absolutely fantastic stay in an authentic and local home of a wonderful Japanese couple. Great location to explore Kanazawa. The room was spacious and had everything one could need. It was one of the cleanest places I have ever stayed at, and it had literally everything, it would be impossible to find a thing this guesthouse didn’t have. The hosts are the sweetest and kindest people, you can feel how much effort they have poured into this lovely guesthouse. Master Gao is the perfect host as well. It was cold and rainy during my stay but I had super warm and cozy blankets and even if it was not needed while sleeping, the heater worked perfectly. I loved sleeping on a futon on tatami flooring, it was a totally new and memorable experience and in the morning I woke up very well rested. The price quality ratio is out of balance, meaning, this is a fantastic stay. Thank you so much and I hope many more travellers will make their Kanazawa visit special by staying in this guesthouse.
- Tyler (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hailyu (10/5): Exceptional - all perfect, the host, the room, the district, and the dog. nothing
- Elianna (9/5): Local experience in a traditional family house - It felt very family-like and comforting. There is a shared guest area where you can get tea and sit down for a break. The hosts offer breakfast for very little cost. Everything is kept very clean and tidy, and the towels were cleaned and changed daily. The beds were futons on tatamis, which was very comfortable. We were warm even in the middle of winter! Daily amenities were provided.
We stayed upstairs where we had two rooms for four people (one large room and one smaller room). The large room was big enough to lay out all our luggages while the futons were laid out.
There are several bus stops nearby with the RL Kanazawa sight seeing bus stop (runs daily every 15mins) just outside.
The host gave us recommendations on a map and made sure we knew where we were going.
I would definitely come back again if I'm in Kanazawa! Stairs were a little steep. If you find it hard to carry your suitcase upstairs, maybe request the downstairs room. There's only one bathroom and shower to share. We found it no problem.
- Anja (10/5): Lovely friendly tiny guest house near Higashi Chaya - Lovely guesthouse close to Higashi Chaya. It is run by an older couple who live on site and there are two or three guest rooms and an adorable Shiba Inu living in the house. I had the smallest room on the ground floor, which was incredibly cheap. Just a few tatami, a small table, a low chair, hooks for clothes. An aircon/heater that worked very well. Natural day light. For me, who goes out sightseeing, that was more than enough. There is also a large kitchen/ living room you are free to use, laundry facilities. All bathrooms are shared and are spick-and-span. The hosts are super friendly and speak English.
Buses for the sights are close by, one bus stop basically in front of the house, another 300m away. Also, there are two really great onsen. Yamato Onsen is maybe 200m away and has muddy brown lovely onsen water. Kuwana Yu is about 500m and has fewer onsen baths but a sauna. Both are vintage Showa era public baths, basic but super clean, bring your own towel. Nothing, really, but this accommodation is simple and you need to be aware of that. Also, this is for quiet considerate travellers, not a party hostel.
- Hannah (10/5): Lovely - Beautiful homestay with such kind people and of course Gao. Comfortable and clean room with easy and flexible check in. Great price and a really good walkable location. The breakfast offered is super tasty and very cheap! We enjoyed our stay here N/A
- Bernardo (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing hosts, amazing shiba inu (Gao) and very comfortable room to sleep in!
- Antonia (10/5): My favourite place to stay in Kanazawa - Amazing stay central and walkable to Higashi Chaya district, castle, gardens and train station. Soku, Chiketo, and GAO were absolutely lovely and super hospitable. I will be staying here again.
The tatami mats (with a mattress) were super comfortable to sleep on and the rooms were nice and spacious with a heater that made you warm straight away. As a solo female traveller I felt safe and welcomed in this home and in the area.
Tip: order the breakfast it is delicious Nothing to complain about they had all the amenities available for you to use
- Soumyashree (9/5): Superb -
- Cooper (8/5): Very good - Owners were lovely and room was very cute, comfortable and warm.
- Francesco (10/5): Exceptional - It was a short but amazing stay!! Owner is super friendly and always up for a talk.. room, bathroom, kitchen everything was clean and very nice.. room was available way before check in time.. and could enter before😊 was very kind.. location is good.. near public transport and Higashi Chaya district.. castle and park are not too far as well.. breakfast was delicious too.. and the presence of Gaoo the dog a plus😊 i would definetly stay here again! Thank you!!!
- Panda_roux (10/5): A warm stay with Gao, Yoneda and Soku - The most beautiful and touching experience of Japanese hospitality. At Gao’s, Yoneda and Soku’s warm welcome made us feel like we stayed with a family. Little Gao-chan was an angel, and we couldn’t get enough of him ❤️
Our room was a big 2-floor room with an AC. We were warm and slept well. The futons can be a bit unusual after western beds, but our backs were really happy with the experience and we rested really well. The guest house and the district are very quiet and allow for good rest.
The accommodation is in an excellent location if you want to visit places in Kanazawa. You can reach most places by foot easily, and during rainy days you can use bus connections, as the area is well connected.
In the end of our stay, our kind hosts gave us handmade gifts, which was incredibly touching.
- Ronda (10/5): Very friendly host in fabulous location - Great location. Very welcoming and accommodating host.
- Elena (9/5): A unique experience of stay - We had such a heartwarming stay! The hosts are very kind persons and we felt welcomed. We had everything we needed. Simple stay but filled with love. Gao boy is so adorable!
- Dalit (8/5): Very good -
- Joonho (9/5): Superb -
- Sigridur (10/5): Wonderful little share house at a great location. Easily my favourite accommodation of my whole trip - It's hard to find anything I didn't love about my stay. The owners were so welcoming and helpful. It was a pleasure to meet them. The room was very comfortable and clean, and the facilities had everything I needed.
The location is excellent, less than a 5 min walk to the Higashichaya teahouse district.
Easily my favourite accommodation of my whole trip
- Russell (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paulina (10/5): Great place with incredibly hospitable owner and a lovely little dog - Amazing host who made my stay very pleasant and comfortable. There also is a friendly and cute dog living in the house.
The place feels like home and it’s well located near main attractions of the town. -
- Marc-kevin (10/5): The most heart warming house in kanazawa! - House was super clean, the owners are one of the loveliest people I've met ever in japan. We only stayed a night but this is easily one of the highlights of our trip!
Gao chan is so cute! Definitely worth the stay just to enjoy their hospitality
Highly recommended
Location is also very convenient and are near the popular districts.
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tran (10/5): A charming stay in Kanazawa that you won't forget! - This stay was one of our highlights of our first Japan trip, even though we only stayed for one night. We felt very welcomed and the owners are so kind and sweet - you could really tell how much effort they put in to make this stay as pleasant as possible (and Gao is so cute!). We had big and heavy suitcases, but Soku even helped us carrying them to the room upstairs. Sleeping on the futon was comfy and we had everything we needed. It was a nice break from the busy big city. It's a pity that we only stayed there one night. We will definitely come back and stay for longer next time! Unfortunately we only spent one night there... it was too charming and nice to leave so soon...
See you next time! ☺️
- Kayla (10/5): Exceptional - Sweetest owners, great location, yummy breakfast, authentic stay!
- Gobby (9/5): Nice and warm family home stay - The couple owners are amiable and helpful with Gaooo! The place is perfectly clean and tidy with clear instruction! It’s only 100m to reach local onsen as well! N/A
- Aya (10/5): Comfortable, pretty accomodation - Very cozy and comfy. Our host was kind and helpful but not overbearing, sticking to his own living quarters but coming out to greet us and say bye as we came and went. If we needed anything he was happy to help. The amenities were clean and great and the rooms were really big, pretty, and comfortable. It was steps away from the old tea and samurai districts and walking distance to tue bar areas. The yakitori place down the street that was recommended is great. Gao is adorable.
- M (10/5): Experience real Japanese hospitality - Kanazawa was my favorite city on my trip and I loved staying in a traditional house for one night, wish I could have stayed longer. The hosts were so kind and the dog so cute. Every place I’ve been to in Japan has been exceptionally clean! The walls are thin, so if you have a snoring neighbor in the room next to you, bring earplugs.
- Zülal (10/5): Exceptional - It was very close to all of the main spots in Kanazawa. I never took a bus and basically walked all over the city. If I hadn’t had 2 luggage’s I would’ve walked to Kanazawa station too. The room had tatami floors and some bedding, a table and a window. There was nothing missing. The hosts were very kind and helpful with anything I asked them. Breakfast was very simple but delish. Gao is the cutest dog ever 🥹❤️ Nothing to complain about.
- Hera (8/5): Very good -
- Alice (9/5): Superb -
- Eva (8/5): Lovely stay with nice hosts. Great value - Good location , walking distance to most sites. Hosts were very kind and friendly. Futon was a bit too firm for me. Sound travels through the thin walls so you can hear it whenever doors are sliding or people are walking around, especially in the early morning or evening. If you are a light sleeper, it may bother you.
- Sarah (8/5): Very good - The hosts were v friendly. Dog v cute. Bed super comfy. Location in a lovely area of kanazawa Some sort of large unit outside bedroom window making a loud whirring noise kept me awake . The location was a bit of a challenge to get to main train station but a local resident who was outside his house saw I was having troubles working out what bus stop and went out of his way to help me actually taking me to right bus stop and helping me with times. He even asked nearby workmen for pen and paper so I could right times down
- Sarah (8/5): nice atmosphere with super cute dog, very clean house - I liked the rooms and the dog is super cute, i liked we could use the kitchen if we wanted, the house was very near an interesting part of kanazawa - with all the temples etc I did not like some sort of air conditioning huge unit right outside my bedroom window which i could hear whirring quite loudly and it kept me awake, there only seemed to be one toilet and one shower room for us all to share, the hosts and other guests, it was quite some distance from the main station, someone in the neighbourhood helped me find the correct bus stop i needed to get to my next accommodation in the evening which was so nice of him, he lived near the bus stop i was looking at which turned out to be no good, he was outside his house and offered to find the right bus stop with me
- Davide (10/5): Nice place and very kind hosts. Gaoo is adorable -
- Sabrina (9/5): Very welcoming, traditional stay in Kanazawa. - The hosts are a very friendly couple who will try to help you with anything you ask. The house is very traditional and there is a lot of attention given to details. The location is only a 7 minute walk to one of the traditional districts and everything else is easily accessible by bus.
- Andrei (10/5): Exceptional - Absolutely the best of Japanese hospitality. The traditional room is huge, clean, and nice decorated. The owners are supernice, friendly, and helpful. It's actually their home transformed into nice budget ryokan. They even gave me a small handmade present when saying goodbye, which was so touching.
The location is great, very close to the famous old district. Three local sentos (public baths) are just behind the corner. 10 minutes to a big supermarket. Everything is perfect, thank you.
- Jennifer (10/5): Relaxing and lovely. - The owners were so nice and friendly.
- Simon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Fabien (10/5): Very nice stay - The hosts were very warm and welcoming, we recommend staying at GAOoo when visiting Kanazawa!
- Ruben (9/5): Highly recommended for a nice stay in Kanazawa. - The owners are super friendly and helpful. The breakfast is simple and delicious. The location is great, next to one of the most historical neighbourhoods in Kanazawa. There is also a nice sento a couple of minutes away. And of course, Gao is a very good girl!
- Flora (10/5): Exceptional -
- Maria (9/5): Well located ,family run, cozy, i definitely will come back - Located on one of the old districts( chayas) or very very close to it
Family run by a couple very friendly and paying attention to your needs, i could leave my luggage after ch ecking out and Gao their dog is so well mannered and cute
