Guest Reviews
- Kristin (8/5): Beautiful location, little outdated, quiet, clean - Beautiful location, large unit. No AC, but it wasnt uncomfortable at night. The init wasnt as nicely decorated as other places but that worked for us since we were traveling with our one year old daughter. The grounds were gorgeous though!
- Verified traveler (4/5): - It was to basic...2 bar chairs 1 bar 'table' 1 chair...no other furniture.. I do no not even remember single ply tp...But for the price..you get what you pay for
- Kristen (6/5): - If you enjoy beautiful back yard views, cold showers, wifi that doesn't work, and being 20 miles away from food services, then this is the place for you!
- Cornelius G. (6/5): Looks a lot fancier than it is. - My wife and I spent our honeymoon on Hawai'i, and this was our third stop. The place is located on a cliff with nice views of the ocean. Overall the estate must have been very luxurious at some point of time, but it appears like it hasn't been very well maintained in the last few years. It is located some 20 minutes off Hilo, which is also the closest place to find a grocery store, restaurant or bar.
We arrived in the afternoon around 4 PM and were welcomed by a full nude photo shoot in the garden. I am sure some people would pay extra for this (probably unintended) service.
Overall the place is well equipped, has a large shared kitchen with anything one might need and each apartment has its own set of microwave, fridge and coffee maker. The apartment we stayed in was huge (two bedrooms, two bathrooms, two balconies) and could have comfortably fit two families.
As an additional easter egg our last night was 'overbooked' and we had to move to another place in 'downtown' Hilo for the last night. But overall the property manager is a very nice chap.
- Greta V. (8/5): Great Villa with great view - This property is amazing with great view, just as in picture. It is a shared villa so it feels clean enough and the bed is very comfortable but there are some touch that is missing for me to give 5 stars: 1) Carpet in the room smell a little due to humidity of Hilo, it would be much better to have fake wood floors or anything different than carpet 2) kitchen supplies are very ruined and dirty, it does not make you to want cook in there 3) Walls paint in the room is little off and there is some mold due to humidity. Overall we enjoyed our stay, especially for the price the Villa is fantastic!
- David (2/5): - External glass door was broken and covered with plastic. Bathroom sink leaked
- Al (8/5): - Great Ocean View!!!! Beautiful Mansion and the natures sounds. Just remember your remotely about 12 miles from Hilo and maybe 5 miles to a small market for basic snacks. Other from that it a great place to be away from all the noise of a city.

- Catherine C. (8/5): Classic Hawaiian "Estate" - A beautiful and classic Hawaiian "Estate" and its grounds await you. Views of the ocean through palm tree silhouettes are unobstructed, meeting high expectations! Rooms are spacious and airy. Quirkiness of some facility details must be expected due to the age of the building.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - It is not a hotel. It is a house which is converted into a rental. There is no phone signal near the property. No good restaurant within 20 miles.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was Ok. Building had lots of mold on outside but none inside. View was great!
- victoria (8/5): From the outside and entryway looks elegant - Grounds & common areas beautiful. BUT. No on-site management. Carpet in the room needs replaced. Discolored & stained. Bed was ptetty comfortable but too high off the floor. Shower curtain seemed stained & smelled of mildew, noisy a.c.(although nice to have a/c) noisy fridge. Coffee: Only one packet(for the 4 cup coffee maker) No bath mat w/towels. Small quantity of shampoo/lotion. Did not replenish -we stayed 2 nights. Microwave in common kitchen did not work.
No ice in freezer, no dish towrls in the kitchen. No smoke detectors nor escape instructions or ladder from top floor. Very concerning.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The house is impressive but massively in disrepair, all the iron doors are rotting and falling apart. Bathrooms had other people’s shampoo bottles in the tub half used and just laying in the window. Shower curtain looks terribly dirty and needs replaced. Not one bathroom rug. Bathroom vanity has dirty cleaning rags left inside it. Rice cooker was dirty and still had water in it along with being scratch and missing Teflon. All the trim, baseboards, walls, light switches, windows and frames, bathtubs, toilets need cleaned they are unsanitary. White bedding has stains all over the sheets and bed protector. Carpets need replaced very stained and pattern worn. Wood floor is water damaged in several places and needs replaced. Entrance is dirty, both stair cases. No manager on duty. Kitchen had dirty silverware and plates. Had to wash everything to be able to make any attempt at food prep with only a electric skillet and no other pots, pans measuring cups or mixing bowls. No cutting board for kitchen fridge was dirty and frosted over.
No extra bedding or pillows
Walls need cleaned and painted
Ac drips on to balcony tile making it very slick. Outdoor lights for balcony have water dripping from them on to balcony.
Christmas tree still up in main entrance in March.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Property was very pretty but far away from everything including restaurants. No staff onsite. Rooms were not as stated with air conditioning. One small window unit in the livingroom with bedrooms far away from unit.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Location and outdoor setting was great. We expected higher quality towels, wash rags, towels. No paper towels were provided.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - We really liked the location and ocean view. Close to Akaka falls, volcanoes, zip line s. We didn't like that there is not enough towels, place not really clean, a/c was working too loud.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Iove the view. It was awesome to wake up and see the ixean from my balcony.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The house was a little dirty. Bugs kept coming through the ac unit. But other than that it was a good place to crash. We were gone most the day.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was nice that we had the place to ourselves most of our time there and even when other guests showed up, we never really ever heard or saw them. The pillows were not the best but we just went to Walmart and bought a few that we left behind. Maybe the future addition of a pool would be nice since the property is away from a lot of things. Otber than that we really enjoyed our stay and the owner was very nice.
- Shane (10/5): - Great view from the rooms, friendly staff, nice place
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Gorgeous view from the lanai on second floor. It is private and quiet. Great for couples. Nice that it has air conditioning and a big comfy bed. But it only had two small pillows so we had to call for two more. We also had a little trouble finding the entrance after dark. There is a small sign on a rock wall about 14 miles west of Hilo on your right. Overall very very nice. Jade was very helpful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I liked the ease of checking in and the peaceful surrounding. Wish there were more things property.
- Laure (6/5): - Tres belle maison
Pas de rangement malgré la grandeur de la chambre
- Verified traveler (2/5): - To put my comment into context, I am a solo traveller relying on public transport or taxis to get around whilst at a destination. Unfortunately, I didn’t realise at the time of booking how remote and isolated Oceanfront Vacation Rental is if you do not have your own car. I have communicated to the owners that the property is more suited to families or groups who have their own transportation. For me, the property was completely unsuitable and wish I knew this beforehand, so I’m writing this for future solo travellers. If you fall into that category, simply do not book! Stay in Hilo instead. There is nothing at the oceanfront vacation rental (no food, drinks (apart from chilled water from the fridge), restaurants, shops...nothing!) It was difficult to get a phone signal and Uber does not come out this far. Once there, you’re stuck there if you’re not willing to pay around $50 taxi to get back into Hilo.
The rooms themselves are dated and worn. The seating is old, mouldy and ripped. The bed was comfortable enough but I don’t know why it was about 4ft high...don’t fall out! Dust on everything which suggests poor cleaning. There are fans but no air conditioning. The bathroom was fairly clean but out dated. I suffered about 15 insect bites in one night of sleeping there. The phone number to contact the management did not work. In the end, I had booked three nights but only stayed one. The management did not offer a refund.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Deceiving - I was very disappointed by this stay. The charm and cleanliness in the photos is where it stopped. The room was old and dingy. Cobwebs and dust surrounded the baseboards. There were only 2 pillows and the towels/bedding clearly hasn’t been replaced in years. The internet failed to work, but by the time we realized, it was too late to contact the off-site manager. The tv is set too low to watch comfortably from bed and there was only 1 pillow each to prop yourself up with. On another note, the walls are paper thin and you can hear absolutely every word of your neighbor’s conversation - even at 6am. This place has potential, but it is very poorly executed. The photos are quite deceiving.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful place! Highly recommended! Quite and worth the money...
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The property was dirty upon arrival. I contacted the person who sent me the directions to get into the property and she said she would refund the days I didn't use. Well it was spring break and there was little available. She said she would have it cleaned the next day. She never followed up or offered a reduction for having to stay in the room. There was mold in the bathroom, holes in the sheets, dirty pillow cases, cockroaches in the toilet, dust bunnies all over the walls and baseboards. It was beautiful house at one time but it is run down and dirty. I was disappointed.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - No one helped us checked in and we did not get any text messages in advance
- Verified traveler (8/5): - When multiple customers were there there was not enough hot water.
- Kristen (8/5): - This place is cool. It doesn't have personal touches and it could use some spiffing up. But the bed was comfy and it was quiet. It's kind of like a mansion split into units. We were in single room with only a bath. The balcony on the two rooms like this is shared. I think all of the other units are suites. We'd definitely stay there again. BTW it is about 16 miles from Hilo and Jade (the off site manager) was very responsive.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - It has a lovely ocean view when it isn't raining. It has an atmosphere of faded grandeur that is kind of charming. It is roomy, and has an extensive outdoor space. The trees and shrubs are interesting.
- Nancy (4/5): - House is beautiful but needs TLC. Walls were paper thin. Bed uncomfortable, BBQ very slow. Very few towels, thin blankets on bed made for cold
Nights. Bath tub was dirty. Outside pond was not working, outdoor furniture by BBQ was cracked. Never got codes before check in so the check in process was a bit of a pain.
- Sara (6/5): Strange mansion failing to reach its potential - Weird place. It could be so wonderful but the property owner/host really hasn’t tried hard enough to make it work. The fact that the Christmas tree was still up in the middle of the lobby in March paints a clear picture. Weird.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - It was down right dirty and gross bed as hard as the floor. Two people with one towel and no one to ask for additional amenities it was horrible would never stay again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The rooms are spacious... ok, huge! Bathrooms are a bit small for such a large place. Beds are super comfortable but the pillows are very thin. Wifi never really worked for us, but not a big deal.
Our room was half carpet and half hard wood. The carpet was outdated and stained but clean.
Overall the property is fine if you want to stay on the north side of the island with limited beaches and more rain. If you're going to Hawaii for the blue skies and beaches, this is not your place. This is more of the tropical area with rocy coastline, rain, and hiking.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was a really pretty home with beautiful garden and gorgeous views of the ocean.
- Xingshi (4/5): Far below expectation and does worth the money - Looks nice from outside but the room condition is far below expectation. There is no service on-site and no cell phone signal at all. To make it worse, the wifi signal is very unstable, and I was asked to reboot the wifi router by myself...
There are broken windows with taps attached to them in my room, and the bath towel and kitchen supplies don't look clean as well. Also, the location is not perfect as well and it is actually quite far from everything.
Overall, it is one of the worst experience I have for the past several years...
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This was one of the most beautiful homes I have ever seen, but needs some TLC. It wasn't that it was dirty or anything, just for such a prestigious looking home I would expect the same quality of everything in the home.
- Gregory (8/5): can't beat the view - Beautiful property on the cliffs, 15 mins from town, but it's sort of a strange mansion with private rooms. Could use some tlc, or at least new sheets, pillows, shower curtains and maybe a desk.
It's self check in/out, but depending on the room, the price beats most Hilo hotels.
- Jerry (8/5): Nice place to stay - Very beautiful property with a lot of mature palm and coconut trees. It's along side a cliff the gives way to a spectacular ocean view. The sunrise is a sight to see for sure
- Mindy (10/5): - Property is at a very private location. At a clear night, we could see the stars which is amazing.
We stay in unit 2, which has a balcony that is hidden by the trees and overlooks the expansive back lawn which extends out to the ocean. We enjoyed having breakfast on the balcony in the morning, and listening to the waves and rain.
Unit 2 has a private laundry area downstairs with very new washer and dryer, which is a big plus.
Unit 2 is also very spacious, with a large living area. Kitchen is equipped for basic needs. I would suggest adding a cutting board, and a electric kettle. The coffee maker doesnt' make water hot enough for tea.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Property run down, but beautiful location right on the ocean, very nice host, big apartment, convenient location near Akaka Falls
- Karen (2/5): - You need a code to enter the place, no management on site. Very rundown. My towel wAs very dirty, rug was dirty. No luggage rack for suitcase, instead there was a truck that is very old and worn. The bed is about 3 feet tall, difficult to get into. No internet no proper curtains on the windows. Asked for small credit as internet did not work got no response. When stating there was told to go downstairs and reset it myself. Arrive to no lighting had to use flashlight to enter the codes. Window air conditioning said need cleaning, it’s a $50 unit from Walmart. Do not stay here
- Erika (4/5): - It was very dated. The bedding was gross furniture old and dusty. There were a total of 5 lizards in our room. The code to our door was the same as the main door. So everyday we had to pack our stuff and take it with us. There we spider webs every where inside and out. I was horrified but my husband and brought cleaning supplies. The toilet had dry poo on it so gross. I really wanted to leave but did not have to additional funds to book else where. Stay at your own risk
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Loved the place, not to touristy, clean and friendly service. Definitely recommend.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Loved the view from out back. Didn’t like that the fountain was stagnant and breeding mosquitoes.
- Jessica (8/5): My husband calls it the crack palace - Very beautiful place and location with very basic dingy accommodations that could be much more luxurious with little investment.
- Jack (8/5): - The only problem is the pillows resembled flatbread and the big and very comfortable king bed had just two. They looked lost! Also, the heavy patio doors absolutely shake the building when they close so an early riser wakes up everyone. Other than those easily corrected items, the place is stunning and the backyard is beautiful overlooking the Pacific!
