Guest Reviews
- Penny (8/5): Friendly place to stay - Friendly, helpful staff.
Pleasant, quiet room.
Good location
Comfortable bed. No towel rail or hook for towel in the bathroom.
Bar closed earlier than expected, but we were the only customers, so not really surprising.
- Robert (8/5): Excellent and would recommend it - Really homely and down to earth environment Happy and chilled

- Chris (10/5): GREAT STAY WILL RETURN AGAIN - WAS VERY COMFY HAD JUST WHAT I NEEDED FOR MY VISIT, AND TO BE ABLE TO RUN DOWNSTAIRS FOR FOOD AND EVEN BETTER A BEER WAS A DEF PLUS
- Robert (9/5): - Very friendly reception from Guy and appreciated his help later.
Also appreciated Nigel not waking me when I had not heard my phone!
Quiet location, clean room and value for what I paid.
- Martha (8/5): - Clean and comfortable room. The owner of the pub was excellent and very helpful. The location is nice and quite. There was no desk to work but that wasn't expected to be honest.

- John (2/5): I would say it was satisfactory for our needs. - It was clean the staff were helpful and in a good location from where we needed to be. The only fault I would say was not very good was the breakfast where we had to. Cook certain things in a microwave which we thought unusual.
- chris (1/5): -
- Sharon (7/5): - Friendly staff.. Lack of cooked breakfast.
- Osborne (8/5): Not the best. - Location. Very tired in need of a good refurbishment,
- Martin (9/5): Nice room, friendly helpful.staff, convenient location - The Rifle Volunteer is a great mix of traditional historic English pub and modern sports bar, the room had everything we needed and lovely comfortable bed a short walk from Ware town centre No complaints
- Ikechukwu (9/5): Awesome Experience - Customer care and location Nothing
- jane (10/5): - Really good value for money. Staff were really lovely.
- morrow (7/5): -
- julie (7/5): good value, clean and comfortable, friendly staff - excellent choice at breakfast you have to microwave your own eggs!
- james (9/5): Had a great stay would definitely stay again. Great choice at breakfast. - Good traditional public house with comfortable accommodation.
- Gillies (10/5): - The staff
- Tom (5/5): Needs urgent refurbishment - * The personnel is friendly and responsive
* The location is close to the centre of Ware * WiFi not working (owner will take action to add booster)
* TV defect (owner will buy new one)
* Cleanliness of the room (dust, fungusâŠ)
* Towels (just 1)
* Breakfast (instant coffee, food not refrigerated)
* Noise from the parking and street next to the room
You pay a relative low price, but still too much for what you get.
- Gaynor (7/5): Perfect for mape for a short stay as I have relatives who live nearby. - Location perfect for me, perfectly adequate accommodation. Pub car park illumination to show entrance cleared.
- Josephine (6/5): Generally Good as before But I hadn't realised My Daughter had already paid for My stay so it was pa - Not being able to properly lock my door!
- Dom Eatherden (9/5): - Great welcoming pub, great owner
- Joe (6/5): The rooms and facilities were as expected from the description and pictures on the booking site. - Noisy water heater in the bedroom
- Rosalind (9/5): -
- Nick (7/5): -
- Bruce (7/5): Covered my needs well - Location is in a one way system that is strange for those not local. Not the fault of the place itself tho. Available was very limited. Covered my needs.
- John (8/5): -
- denise (1/5): Needs refurb and noisy generator or loud machine blasting all night - A generator of some kind was vibrating and loud all night through from the room above. Bathroom shower fit tin broke, wallpaper peeling, fan full of dust
- John (8/5): A very enjoyable stay - The breakfast was excellent with a wide range of choice of beverages and food. The room was a little noisy once sunrise
had taken occurred owing to passing traffic but this was a very minor problem,. I would recommend The Rifle Volunteer to others and may try book a room there on future occasions. Nothing comes to mind
- Ben (9/5): Good value for money. Will definitely stay again when i'm in the area. - Location is good and only a short walk from the train station.
- Claire (9/5): - Super friendly staff. Very comfortable bed.
Nice to have tea and coffee facilities in the room.
Not too far to walk into the main shops in Ware. There could have been toiletries in the shower (shampoo, shower gel etc).
It's a shame that there weren't any pizzas available as we were looking forward to pizzas.
- Sarah (8/5): Bed was very comfy and staff very helpful and friendly - Breakfast was nice and location not to far from where we had to get to. Although bit to far to walk too so got cabs I noticed the seat where breakfast was were very stained. And could smell a doggy smell
- Janet (7/5): An ideal stopover, with such a friendly warm welcome. - Great welcome and hospitality by owners! Not a fault of the owners but the heatwave made our room VERY hot and airless. perhaps a fan might of helped but as heatwaves are not too common in UK this was probably an event not thought about.
The road noise was very loud until very late - made worse by having to have the window wide open (heatwave!)
- Nicola (7/5): -
- Jamie (7/5): Just what was needed for a works stay - Very nice pub, very friendly staff and bed was really clean and comfortable Not enough shower pressure, it was like a dribble.
- Gary (8/5): -
- Larisa (10/5): The lady (I think her name was Sarah, not sure) who welcomed me on arrival was wonderful! - Location great đ Nothing
- SHAHEEN (8/5): - The location is absolutely perfect for me given its walking distance to Ware coffee shops and the station. Nothing really, except the coat hanger attached to the door fell off - just needs replacing.
- Stella Khalafalla (10/5): My honest opinion - A lovely little pub in Ware. Great location with a private carpark. The landlord and staff in the pub are lovely and friendly. Very helpful. He was a lovely host. Rooms were clean cosy and warm on a very extremely cold night when we stayed. In the morning there was a nice help your self breakfast. Good value for money. There was nothing i didn't like about my stay
- Martin (10/5): -
- Heather (10/5): - Love it always come back Nothing
- christine (6/5): A pleasant and warm room provided adequate sleeping arrangements and the breakfast was substantial - Breakfast was varied and suitable for us.
location was superb for the occasion we were attending nearby. Breakfast felt rather rushed as we were told we only had until 9am. This was 8.50 am
- Saverio (1/5): The occupants decided to sleep on a sofa bed rather than stay here - As for upsides, it was warm, quiet, and the staff lady was friendly the one time we interacted. I booked this room for my parents to stay in over the Christmas period (they don't speak the language), because some of the rooms pictured in their profile looked nice. Apparently we did not get one of the nice rooms.
The room we got was instead barely larger than the bed it held.
There was no space to hold toiletries on the tiny sink, no holder for toilet paper, no soap to shower with, and also no change of bedsheets over five nights, not that that impacted us much as my parents preferred to stay at mine for three of the five nights (they would have stayed in the room only one night, had I had the space on Christmas).
There was supposed to be breakfast -which one could describe as passable-, but that was also not provided on Boxing Day because the pub was closed. I'm not sure, but assume the same was true on Christmas Day.
Overall a stay that we won't repeat.
- Brian (8/5): - Friendliness of staff, breakfast & bar. Everything ok, thanks
- Bishop (9/5): -
- Trudy (10/5): Every thing was spot on - It was brilliant for our location for Christmas Very friendly and welcoming
- kenneth (5/5): Shall not use again. Staff were very friendly and helpful. - Basic Room heating. - poor
Cleanliness - black mould!
Stair way - grim!
Through bar to dining area - really!!
Whole place needs updating!
- Christopher (7/5): Fair - Comfortable stay. The noise from the pub below was far too loud and did not stop untine midnight.
- Colin (10/5): Absolutely loved it - The friendliness of the staff and the excellent old pub and the variety of beers available Nothing
- Malcolm (5/5): Best summed up as adequate - The location is excellent (for visiting family in our case but also for the town centre). Our room was warm and clean and the bed was very comfortable, the (electric) shower was good and such staff as we had dealings with were friendly and helpful. We expected a small room but not the limited storage. Neither did we expect that there would be no hand towels or shower gel. An otherwise good continental breakfast was spoilt by a lack of decent bread and I don't regard having to scoop spread from a communal tub as acceptable. Our first night was spoilt by very loud 'music', the base of which would probably have registered on a seismometer. We were assured that this was not the norm and, in fairness, our other two nights were undisturbed. It is also over-priced, working out cheaper than the far superior Premier Inn and Feathers Hotel only because their breakfasts are extra.
- Barry (10/5): - Bed and pillows where comfy
- Rob (8/5): -
- Martin (7/5): -
- Mark (8/5): Cheap & better than decent! - Great location & amazing value. Car park a blessing.
Friendly and welcoming staff. Only downside was my room smelt of damp
- Michelle (10/5): They did everything they could to help us - The convenience of location manager was very welcoming Unfortunately the toilet was a problem not flushing
- Martin (8/5): Good value & welcoming - Staff were friendly & accommodating
- Gillian (8/5): - Welcoming and friendly staff. Room was just what we needed. Clean and comfortable.
- Swamp_duck (7/5): -
- Stephen (10/5): - Nice place clean and comfortable,friendly staff đ
- Mark (7/5): -
- Diane (6/5): Thanks to the fact that one member of our party was unable to come we managed with two rooms and it was convenient for t - We booked two rooms, the two upstairs were clean, we had a comfortable night and the showers were good. (You need your own toiletries). Two upstairs rooms were small but adequate but the downstairs room accessed from the street wasnât fit for use due to a strong gas smell which gave us a headache after a few minutes. We couldnât use it so had to make do with the two upstairs rooms.
- mark (8/5): -
- Kevin (8/5): -
- paul (5/5): - Good location. Bed small and uncomfortable. Poor breakfast
- Thomson (7/5): Easy simple stay - Easy straight forward Breakfast slightly average but no issues
- Carlos (10/5): Good value accommodation - Very friendly and attentive staff. Room was clean, warm and comfortable. Everything you could ask for Nothing to add
- Martin (8/5): Comfortable & affordable - Location & price were very good. Staff very friendly & helpful, bed comfortable. Itâs basic accommodation but a very reasonable price, so nothing to complain about!
- Robertson (10/5): All in all. We enjoyed our stay and got a good night's sleep. - Simple room, not too big and not too small. Very cosy, clean and had all the amenities necessary. Not a cooked breakfast but continental, just as good and enjoyed it.
Also bedding and towels were clean and spotless. Definitely up to scratch when it comes to a clean hotel room.
Staff are super friendly and helpful. Shower cubical was on the small side.
- Barry (8/5): Meeting up with friends and family đ - Location All ok đ
- Aaron (1/5): Disappointing, needs a makeover - Ideal location to town. Room not clean, bedding damp, smelt of damp
- Jacqueline (10/5): Good location, friendly staff and a good nights sleep - Very comfy room, lots of selection for breakfast. Good stay I would have liked shampoo, but otherwise nothing to complain about.
- Kerry (9/5): Very enjoyable . All staff very cheerful and helpful. - The character of the building
- Karen (8/5): -
- Birgitt (10/5): -
- liam (6/5): -
- Chris (8/5): Good for the price. - Convenient, quiet and friendly. We just needed a bed for the night. Cheap and cheerful
- Els (5/5): Not as expected - Staff were friendly. The single room was not as shown on the website. The room was more a storage room changed into a bedroom. The entrance was directly on the parking lot.
- Karl (9/5): Welcoming, clean and comfortable - This is budget hotel that really delivers. Lovely staff, that made you feel really welcome. Rooms are simple and comfortable and very clean. I didn't eat the breakfast as I dont usually but It was included in the price and looked great.
A simple and honest place. Would thoroughly recommend. You know, its budget so manage your expectations accordingly and you get the positive review above.
- Mihai (8/5): -
- Aidan (10/5): -
- Danny (2/5): Very bad - The noise of the room next to us we didnât get any sleep , no toilet roll in bathroom, and to be given a 9am time for breakfast on a Sunday morning was really bad as going on a night out who wants to be there at this time , we came down at 915 and all cleared away .
- Westwood (10/5): Very nice two night stay - Location, clean, comfortable
- Nicky (5/5): Disappointing overallâŠ.. - The check -in process was easy and communication was good overall. As a single occupant, the single room assigned to me faced a car park and was next to a loud external air conditioning unit. The room itself was tired and needed a refresh; the carpet was grubby and stained. No shower products were provided either. It was disappointing tbh.
I decided not to stay the night and drove home to London.
- Paul (8/5): Useful location and comfortable room. - Quiet and comfortable room. Welcoming staff. No food available. However, I was allowed to order food in and eat in the bar area.
- Matthew (8/5): Very decent overnight stay - Recommended - The room was fairly small, and quite basic, but the price was also very reasonable considering breakfast is included. Everything was clean, and everything worked, so as purely an overnight stay on a budget it's pretty much ideal. Not noisy, even though it's over a pub. TV good, shower works fine, comfortable bed, and the breakfast in the morning was also very good. They don't do a full English (fair enough at this cost), but have hot eggs and a very good spread on the continental side. Recommended.
- Andrew (9/5): -
- aparajit (9/5): - Good location and friendly hosts. Room was very clean, great value for money.
