- Verified traveler (4/5): Disappointing Stay – Misleading Listing and Poor F -
I booked this property expecting a private bathroom, as there was no mention of shared shower rooms at the time of booking. Only now, after revisiting the website, do I see that it’s listed as shared—something I’m certain wasn’t disclosed earlier. What’s more frustrating is that the cost was the same as rooms with attached bathrooms, which makes this feel like a poor value.
The setup resembles more of a hostel or guest house than a proper hotel. There’s no dedicated parking, and finding a spot on the street is a challenge—you may end up walking quite a distance just to park your car.
The house rules are unusually restrictive. You’re not free to come and go as you please, and the owner keeps the keys, which means you have to leave your valuables and keys with them. It felt more like being in a controlled environment than a relaxing stay—almost prison-like in terms of freedom and privacy.
For the price I paid (around ÂŁ40), I expected basic hotel-level facilities and autonomy. Unfortunately, this experience fell far short of that.
- Ian (8/5): - Previous reviewers said that the decor was tired and dated; this is true, but the welcome was excellent; the bed comfortable; a decent breakfast was provided and it was a fair price. All that is more important than the decor
- Tracey (10/5): - good experience . good price for central carmarthen
- N (10/5): Clean and well kept - Very nice and kind hearted manager.
Toilet and shower are not attached, thats the a bit uncomfortable..Other overall good experience. Room was neat and tidy.
All areas were clean and well kept.
- Ian (6/5): - Ok, the place is a bit tired but the rooms are clean and the breakfast is lovely.
For the price, you have to say good value.
- Paul (10/5): - Very clean, one of the last true character buildings left in Carmarthen. Nothing too much trouble for our excellent hosts, magnificent food, the breakfasts were outstanding. Would definitely stay here again.
- Chris (6/5): Helpful and attentive owner - Did the job; owner very helpful; extremely quiet; has seen better days
- Paul (8/5): OK hotel - Small hotel/B+B close to the centre of Carmarthen. 15 mins walk from the railway station, little/no parking at the hotel but a cheap car park nearby. Good breakfast.
I would describe it as nothing special but would use it again
- Iolo (10/5): Visit - I thought it was amazing and great expectations.
- Jack (10/5): - Loved the consistent mid-century decor, very nostalgic. Get what you pay for, clean facilities, nice atmosphere, friendly hosts. Would've liked the twin beds next to eachother as I had no option for a double, but it's what we booked so no real complaint! Decent view out the back of the hills and churchyard. Pool table and communal area was lovely and well looked after. Short walk to highstreets and pubs, not too far walking from the train station.
- Sharon (8/5): - Oldie worldie, but very welcoming, comfortable, warm and clean. Staff were very helpful. We spent a good comfortable night.
- Alex (10/5): - Excellent staff
- Verified traveler (8/5): Sat night stay Sept 24 - Friendly and helpful owner and a delicious breakfast. Could do with a bit of updating but all clean. Sink in room a good idea. Fine for a short stay.
- Iolo (10/5): - Everything was up to satisfaction.
- Karen (8/5): - I loved how friendly the gentleman was on arrival. It is an older guest house but that was the appeal for me.
- Ilina (10/5): - Friendly and helpful owner
- John (10/5): - From check in we were greeted warmly. As we were on a motorbike trip the offer of garage parking for the bikes was very much appreciated. This is a major plus for me. Breakfast was great. The retro feel of the place is all part of its natural charm. This is an individual family run guest house, not an anonymous chain. Well recommended.
- Durga (6/5): - Shared toilets which we did not know when booking - was inconvenient
- Priboianu (10/5): Great place - Very nice hosts, the free breakfast was great
Rooms are clean and cozy.
- j (10/5): 1st class - clean and fresh all over owner was very helpful and friendly
breakfast was 1st class would highly recommend this guest house to every one
- George (2/5): - As soon as we got there we was greeted with poor service and spoken to extremely rude upon seeing the roon we was absolutely disgusted as there was dust/dirt on everything the window was cracked and could easily cut someone themselfs and the room also had a fire door to escape which my four year old daughter tried to exit through. All in all was a terible experience will not go back there again.
- Ann (10/5): - Very clean. Close to town center. Hearty breakfast.
- Nilah (8/5): - Clean

- Miss (10/5): Happy customer - We stayed for one night , bed was comfortable, bathroom is seperate however i used the bath which was emaculate, staff are very plesent and breakfast was lovely. Decor is oldy worldy and dark but still lovely and clean

- Paul (8/5): - Welcoming people, excellent food.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Friendly Guest House, great for a budget stay - Very friendly and clean. A full cooked breakfast was included and as much tea/coffee as we liked. We had a nice view and it was an easy enough walk from the station except for 1 steep hill! They are well set up for social distancing. It's a little old fashioned but great value and very well kept.
- Sharon (10/5): - Staff are so friendly and accommodating. Highly recommend staying there. Breakfast is out of this world!
- Scott (8/5): - Very friendly and welcoming staff/owners. Breakfast was comprehensive and tasty. There is limited free parking outside the Guesthouse overnight. Could do with some updating, does have shared bathrooms and communal kitchen. Good value overall with a central location.
- Dave (10/5): - There is a cosy bar area and reception as you walk in to the guest house , this leads into a lovely restaurant section where the food is absolutely great and is quiet renown amongst the locals.
Going further into the Old Priory there is a party reception/dance floor doubling up as a games room with a pool table darts and other games , also a seated area with TV available.
then you come to the rooms which are laid out on two levels , these are bright and spacious rooms and over look the Towy river and gardens of the Old Prior Guest house. The rooms have a wash basin with in the room but the bath/shower and toilets are located at either end of the short corridors as is the small kitchen area for preparing teas and coffees.
The place is a lovely family run guest house and all the staff are pleasant and caring people and it was a pleasure to stay there.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - No tea facilities in room, very very dated, no b/ room facilities in room, bed very old & much to soft, iww left aftee 20 mins to find another place to stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Visiting the priory is like visiting family, we are always made very welcome. We will keep coming back.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Needs a bit of updating.
Friendly and helpful staff.
Nice breakfast.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I really like all staff members all were so helpfull
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Comfortable & quiet accommodation & good food. The landlord has a garage for motorcycles.
Good size room with sink and shared bathrooms (there are several) Small kitchenette for making tea/coffee.
Good cooked breakfast included.
Evening meal was sizeable, tasty and great value.
- Joseph (10/5): - In our way to the Fishguard ferry we needed a place to stay as we were travelling by motorcycle. I booked the Old Priory completely blind without any recommendation or having read any reviews as the day was getting late and we still had an hour to travel. We could not have chosen a more perfect place to stay. Phil and his team went beyond what was expected. As soon as they saw we were on motorbikes, we were told there was a garage we could store them in. Amazing. The Priory has an extensive menu until 8pm, a bar, pool table and a clean and nostalgic decor. It’s charming and welcoming with all amenities needed for a comfortable stay including WiFi. We will be staying again and would highly recommend it.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - No toilet in room hence we had to walk down corridor in middle of night for toilet.
Friendly staff and good cooked breakfast.
