Hostal Katari

Hostal Katari was clean, tidy and friendly. The staff were patient with my lack of Spanish! Very nice location close enough to town to be easy to access but not noisy at night.

Please put a better sign on the front, I struggled to find it!

Comfortable, some lovely dogs and cats and relaxing furniture with a good view of mountains

The staff really, I turned up very exhausted to check in and having to go into their restaurant looking for their hostel as they don’t have a sign for some reason. I had my friend with me who helped me check I with her spanish and the older woman there made me pay more money as my friend came to my room for a couple hours before her bus later. As we left reception she yelled at her worker to ‘make sure she leaves in two hours!’ Quite rude really, the place is nice and relaxing other than that.

Rooms were tidy and comfy and all facilities (kitchen, shared bathrooms) were spotless. There’s a mini mart across the street to buy necessities and a great produce market next door. It’s a little away from the tourist throngs in the center and felt more relaxed.

The address in booking.com is incorrect—find it on Google maps instead. It’s a little outside the center of San Pedro (7-10 minute walk). For me, it was nice to be out of the throngs of tourists in the center (the on-site restaurant and nearby markets serve locals and it’s really nice), but plan to walk a little in the heat of the day and at night to reach/leave the center. I also just have to mention that the host was very rude to my local friend (a tourist guide) who came to pick me up for a tour one morning. The situation was born out of a misunderstanding but made for a very awkward and uncomfortable situation for me. The host shouted at and scolded my guide and asked him to leave, while never addressing me as the paying guest, which felt disrespectful. The whole thing was unnecessarily awkward and tense for everyone involved.

Good location, far enough away from busy area to cut down on noise but with 5 min walk. Large rooms with comfortable warm beds. Great staff, super friendly, helpful, nice, patient with my lack of Spanish (they don’t speak English). Awesome dogs and cats that you will just fall in love with. Great view of mountains and volcano. Good common areas, kitchen area, outside seating, etc.

No restaurant on location. Looks like there used to be but not open now (?) But many restaurants very close. No heating in rooms, or space heaters, and it gets very cold at night in winter. But beds are very warm. No English speakers. But I don’t speak good Spanish, so I can’t hold that against them. Plus they are so nice, that more than makes up for it. A little loud in morning with roosters crowing and dogs barking in distance, but I got used to it by 2nd night. Showers had good flow and hot water but it was difficult to get the temp just right. It takes a lot of adjusting the cold knob and the hot knob.
