St Nicholas Hotel Colchester

Comfortable, good rooms and location

No parking, had a dirty towel in the room what looked like shit stained Check in staff wasn’t able to find my booking and it was hard to get around

Excellent location but everything else is pretty average. There are two jointly managed hotels on opposite sides of the street. The George is the old inn which has a bar and reception. The St Nicholas is over the road and just a bland anonymous sub-Premier Inn with swipe card entry and a labyrinth of corridors and rooms. It's tidy and overall pretty clean but utterly soulless. There is supposed to be someone on site at all times but the only other humans we saw were the rude housekeepers banging on our doors at 10:55 shouting "YOU HAVE TO LEAVE NOW"! Good morning to you too! There's a little bit of street noise (we were there Friday night) but you have to expect that being right in the town centre and it didn't continue late. There's a small Pay & Display car park hidden around the back of The George. You have to look for it but that's the best place to park - £12 for 24 hours and there's a slow EV charger too. If you miss the small sign for it then you have to do a go-around on the one-way system so keep a careful look out for it - on the left just after the George down a tiny side street. If you just want somewhere clean and in a central location then this is good value, but if you want somewhere with any charm at all then look elsewhere.

We stayed Saturday and Sunday night unfortunately Sunday tbe room was not refreshed or the tea coffee loo roll replenished
