"Muito bom, mas tem onde melhorar"

8.0

"Pleasant stay"

Hotel Tavares Correia is very well located in the city center also perfectly secured. It is close from most of the commodities. The rooms are spacious and clean. Breakfast is ok. This is most likely the best hotel in Garanhus.

Our stay was a sad experience, returning after 20 years. Troubles began with the ludicrous booking experience. My Portuguese is not bad and I wasn't masquerading as a local, but the level of misunderstanding was beyond comprehension. They require 50% deposit and with no secure booking form they kindly sent me a paying-in slip - for their bank in Recife. I explained why I couldn't use this and asked for their IBAN codes. Numbers were sent and I tried to send the money (Barclays doesn't do $BR) in $US and £350 was lost in space for 3 weeks. This hotel is now a conference centre and has suffered for being so. The previously lush gardens are now sparse, the greatest sin being the felling of flame trees that previously surrounded the pools. Due to prolonged drought in the area no grass grows but a small army are employed for continuous leaf sweeping duties, a thankless task. The pool area has been paved over leaving one pool, which was delicious but unsheltered. When booking, I requested a chalet in which we stayed 20 years ago. As we were the only guests in this great emptiness we were, in fact, put in the "Governor's Villa" offering 8 beds for us 3. It was very well appointed, luxurious bathrooms etc, but the important facilities for travellers were lacking: TVs were useless, we needed a fresh WiFi code every time we logged on and the internet could only be accessed in reception, and the final blow was when the safe (containing our passports) locked out as we were leaving and required 1 hour of deep discussion inside the wardrobe before a call to the manufacturers revealed a very simple solution that no-one in the hotel knew about. The hotel is old-fashioned in it's management and customer care, whilst retaining a veneer of professional service. All the staff were polite and helpful but woefully underoccupied. The atmosphere is now sad, uninviting and expensive, a sharp reminder that it's not always a good thing to go back.
