dirty and old room. It seem like they never clean the toilet. No hot water for the sink in our room only cold water. Owner is friendly and good location.

The owners are amazing and were willing to drive us personally to the train station. Yuko is charming and runs her quaint home like a champ. Her breakfast is a wonderful selection of traditional Japanese food. You won’t find nicer or more accommodating people in this little village.

This is all about location and Yuko, the owner. The hotel is worn around the edges (it feels like a visit to your favorite elderly relative that hasn't updated the decor), but it doesn't matter because it is clean and Yuko is an amazing host. Onsen #1 is right outside the front door, and the other 8 are just steps away. Yuko provided us with amazing service, from picking us up at the train, tracking down a bottle of sake left on the train(!), returning to the station to retrieve the sake when it arrived on the next train, driving us to the monkey park after helping us first store our luggage at the station, and then returning a glove my son left at the hotel to the luggage storage before we even realized he had left it. Then we get to the food... an amazing traditional Japanese feast for dinner. I sorely regretted eating a big lunch in Obuse before arrival. Breakfast was also delicious and multicourse, all cooked by Yuko's husband, Yuki. I have such fond memories from our brief stay that I'll carry with me because it was such a unique and truly Japanese experience. My favorite part was heading out in the light snowfall at 6:30am in the provided yukata and geta to complete the nine-onsen circuit. I had the streets to myself as I clacked along in my wooden sandals as the dawn was just breaking. It was magical. And after I finished I discovered one of the best onsens in town was the private Onsen in the hotel for guests.

The hosts were lovely and their place had a lot of heart in it. One felt really welcome. Yuko picked us up from the station. We dropped off our luggage at the ryokan, and she drove us to the snow monkey park. Giving us advice about the bus to get us back. Her husband cooked up a delicious meal.

I knew beforehand that it would be traditional Japanese bedding which is too firm for me, so I'm not going to mark the ryokan down for having firm beds. It may be important to you though.

"authentic place to visit Shibu onsen village and nearby snow monkeys"

8.0

centrally located on main street in Shibu Onsen near all the 9 public onsen, simple Japan style accommodation with friendly host who picked us up from Yudanaka station and made a lovely breakfast. Had a lovely sushi at Kozushi restaurant around corner (made a booking via our host)

the place is a little dated and sleeping on the floor was hard

Yuko san and his husband was very kind and helpful. Nice location

Price is upscale but The ryokan is in a run down.. not well maintained and dusty! I was in the annex building -quite scary to be honest.

"Lovely accommodating hosts, cozy comfortable room, delicious plentiful food"

10.0

Hosts met us at the train station to drive back to the ryokan, even with 2 cars since we were 5 people! Let us leave our luggage until check-in time. Really lovely room with a pretty view of the narrow town streets. Sink in the room, which is rare for ryokans! Comfy mats for sleeping, comfortably warm room (December!), delicious and hearty dinner and breakfast. Beautiful onsen, plus right across from one of the 9 public onsen. They drove us up to the entrance to the snow monkey park the next morning!

I really can't think of anything... It's not the most luxe ryokan in town, but it's lovely! One of our group was bugged that the only bathing facilities were in the onsen, so no private bathing/shower at all, so I guess be aware of that.
