I had a phenomenal experience at the Black Elephant Hostel. It quite easily is the best hostel experience I've had in the US! From start to finish, the staff were professional, warm, and willing to answer any questions. The hostel was clean and beautifully decorated. My room was cozy and spacious for a hostel. I had a great night's sleep and felt well-rested for my next day of travel. I highly recommend this hostel to travelers who are adventurous, traveling solo, open-minded, and looking to connect with other travelers while in Portland. The hostel is also conveniently located in the downtown area and there are plenty of great restaurants, cafes and supermarkets in the area (for those who want to cook in the kitchen). All in all, a wonderful experience. Highly recommend!

"The Black Elephant was super stylish, conveniently located near the old port and super clean."

The hostel is super stylish. Every floor had different beautiful wallpaper. The kitchen and living room were full of distinctive furniture, wall art and other decor. The staff was polite and helpful. The woman who checked us in suggested we might like taking a ferry to Peaks Island. We took her advice and loved it there.

Our room was tiny. The two full beds were bunk beds and there wasn't even a chair. It was still stylish, though with beautiful wallpaper on the ceiling.

The property is so cool, artistic, friendly, welcoming, and clean! PERFECT location.

Nothing - everything is great. The hostel experience isn’t for everyone, but we had a great time.
