The Monarch Resort

Location was good

Non responsive staff. We called reception several times they never picked up nor replied. Rooms were very low quality broken doors and furniture. Floor was making noise while walking

Pacific Grove has notoriously high prices, along with Carmel and Monterey. This place was reasonably priced compared to many. It is getting along in years, but seems to be pretty well maintained. We really enjoyed seeing living plants in the light wells of the corridors; a rarity in a hotel. I also liked that the layout of the hotel is quite different than typical hotels. It even has a shake roof, once popular, but also a rarity these days. And they had a elevator, which greatly helped getting our luggage to an upper floor. It is very close to the rocky shore and we could actually hear the breakers at night.

The breakfast was adequate and typical but not outstanding.

Clean room, comfortable bed

We booked the hotel through Booking.com and received confirmation for early check in at 2:00pm. When we arrived at the hotel, we were told that our room would not be ready until 3:00pm. When I showed them my early check in confirmation email from Booking.com I was given the option of rooms on the first floor but I declined them because they were close to the elevator and ice machine. When I asked if our room could be next to be cleaned since I did have early check in confirmed, I was told for an extra $30 they could accommodate me. The receptionist was firm that she had given me options and since I declined I had to wait. I was shocked that even if they had no record of my early check in confirmation from Booking.com, that she would charge me even though I had email proof. I had a headache and we were tired from traveling and needed to rest so we waited in the car until 3p. The icing on the cake was no internet at the hotel - I should've checked before I booked but still, who doesn't provide internet at hotels these days?! We will not be recommending Monarch Resort and will find other lodgings when we return to Pacific Grove, we visit regularly.

The staff was nice and the place was clean. The plants are a nice detail

The pool closes early and the room was really hot but when you open the door it’s nice.
