"Showa shabby 昭和レトロな感じ"

6.0

To be honest, this place was the only one with room vacancies that offered breakfast for the date my friends and I wanted to visit Hakone and was within our budget. This place seems to have been frozen in time. If you've ever seen any pictures of an average Japanese onsen ryokan room from the Showa era, this is what you'd get. It's a room only with no toilets or baths in the room. The toilet is down the hall. At least they modernized the toilet so it's not a Japanese squatty potty. The beds are futons placed directly on the tatami floor. That was too hard for me to sleep comfortably, but fortunately there were extra futons and blankets in the closet so managed to make myself a comfortable enough nest to sleep in. There is no view to speak of and if you don't reserve dinner at the ryokan, make sure to come early enough to grab a bite to eat from the surrounding area since everything closes early. The shops close at 6pm and diners around 9pm. The one thing this shabby place going for it is the quality of the bath water. Pulled directly from the Owakudani hot springs, the cloudy water is soft and warms you up to the core. But, I strongly recommend that you bring your own shampoo and bath gel, especially ladies, since the stuff that's offered by the hotel isn't all that great. Breakfast is the standard Japanese fare--rice, miso soup, grilled fish, Japanese style eggs (dashimaki tamago), salad, and pickles. There was also tangerine for dessert. The quality of rice they use is good and the breakfast is filling. The hospitality was good, too. The owner was friendly and happy to be of help. I have no idea if they speak English there, tho.

"Nice ryokan with hot spring"

8.0

The owner is very friendly and help carrying the luggage. Premise has free parking and the nearby restaurant sells yummy food . We loved the sesame rice next door. For the price we paid i really strongly recommended this place as it comes with free breakfast too. Authentic Japanese breakfast. The only cons is shared bathroom and it’s does not differentiate between the genders so a bit awkward.

Stayed here for 2 nights, love this place. The onsen is nice and although the owner doesn't speak much english, he has been very welcoming and hospitable. Never short of hot green tea with surprise snacks. Will stay here again :)

"Simple but lovely"

8.0

A very sweet little Ryokan. Simple but clean and pleasant. The owner is very kind and welcoming. There are 2 small onsen (one male, one female, though they don't seem to be used communally and are rather too small to share with strangers!), which you can reserve for private use on arrival. A lovely place to stay.

"Danish couple. Very sweet host."

10.0

This is a nice, cosy place in Hakone. Close to bus stop and very easy to find. Friendly and caring host, ready with tea, local snacks and fruits. Easy treks nearby, to see Mt. Fuji on a clear day. Walking distance to very nice supermarked, 7/11 and restaurants. We highly recommend this place.

"Beautiful ryokan with nice hosts"

8.0

Ive only remembered to review it now even though I stayed here last year 2016, because when I came back to Japan, Kyoto this time, we stayed in another ryokan, and I can't help but conpare the 2 ryokans ive stayed both at. This ryokan is traditional, very homey, nice and clean, plus the hosts are really nice people. When we arrived the elderly man made an effort to befriend and ask us about our trip, and also gave us mini ice cream, they were really yum. The view from our room was beautiful, we also had a small balcony it was so calming. The bathhouse had a natural spring water, it was my first time do try, and the man was friendly enough to ask me about the experience. They even had a channel list to make our stay even more convenient. I would really love to come back to this place. It's not a big ryokan, which makes it more homey, it really felt like a home. I still have the pen souvenir they gave us when we left.

"Not in Hakone, it's an hour bus ride away"

6.0

Rustic might be the kindest description. Run by 2 older gentlemen with limited English, but try their best to be helpful. I mistakenly booked thinking this Ryokan was in Hakone but discovered using the tourist information centre at Odawara that it is another bus ride away. It took us an hour to get into Hakone on the Saturday because Hakone is very popular at the weekends & the roads are virtually at a standstill. The futons are very comfy & cosy, the parrafin heating does indeed have a strong smell as said by a previous reviewer. If you get noisy guests in adjacent rooms you will definitely hear them. The main problem for us was the lack of washing facilites in the shared bathroom, just cold water taps in the basins adjacent to the gents pissoirs, off this room are 2 toilets with lockable doors. Fine to clean your teeth but not much more. The only hot water is in the onsen downstairs where you shower before soaking & the shower is fixed at floor level with a little stool to sit on, no wall hung shower fitting. And you may or may not know that washing in the onsen is a no no. There are 2 small onsens that you can use privately. There is a nice little restaurant 2 minutes walk away & a good shop selling home cooked ribs & chicken. Probably a good place to stay if you like walking, this wasn't possible in late march when it was covered in snow. There are no views of Mount Fuji from here.

"Homely visit and awesome onsen!"

10.0

The owner was a very nice gentleman who always helped us the best he could. During our visit all buses stopped due to snow so we were at the hotell all day but still had a great time. We got complementary fruits and beer, he made sure our hot water for tea never ran out and the onsen is very very cozy and geniuine (you could reserve it for private use at the hotel). The room had two futons and a heated kotatsu (low table). Our room did smell a bit food/fishy but all in all we were still very happy with our stay.

"If you want a genuine Japanese Ryokan in Hakone, this is the one!"

8.0

A very old ryokan, all timber inside, hot baths for men and women, genuine Japanese meals eaten on the floor, and futons on the floor for sleeping. Friendly staff, although language was an occasional problem, but hey we don't speak Japanese so it all worked out. This ryokan is a little bit hard to get to by public transport so I would recommend a taxi.
