Hotel Fransiskus is housed in a former monastery, which gives the property a special atmosphere and a sense of history that sets it apart from many modern hotels. When I first arrived, I briefly wondered whether I had accidentally checked into a nursing home rather than a hotel, as the building is also connected to healthcare and social services. However, this first impression quickly disappeared once I learned more about the history of the place and experienced its calm and welcoming atmosphere. The rooms are modest rather than luxurious, but they contain everything one needs for a comfortable stay. I particularly appreciated the excellent toiletries and the small desk with a proper chair. As someone who often travels with a laptop, I always welcome a workspace where I can sit comfortably instead of having to work from the bed. The reception was exceptionally friendly and warm. Upon arrival, I was given a brief introduction to the history of the building, which added a personal touch and made the stay even more enjoyable. While the room rate may seem high considering the simplicity of the accommodation, this is largely a reflection of Iceland rather than the hotel itself. Hotel and guesthouse prices throughout the country are generally very high, and within that context Hotel Fransiskus compares well with similar accommodations. Overall, I found it a comfortable and practical place to stay.

The breakfast was somewhat disappointing for me. The selection was rather basic, consisting mainly of bread, cheese and ham slices, hard-boiled eggs, some cucumber and tomato, as well as cereals and other breakfast staples. There was not even plain skyr available, which I had rather expected in Iceland. As I have a fairly restricted diet, there was not much that I could eat. I had expected perhaps a warm egg dish or some smoked fish, which would have offered a little more variety. The coffee was served from a thermal dispenser, with only cold milk available, which made the breakfast feel rather basic overall. That said, this may simply reflect the standard breakfast typically offered in smaller hotels and guesthouses in Iceland rather than being a shortcoming of this particular property.
