I am writing this to share my families experience with The Fairfield Inn, Myrtle Beach North. We came here out of town for a family funeral. Reserved 1 room for 3 nights and 1 for our 2 sons for 2 nights. We have been Marriott Members about 15 years, stayed over 1500 nights in Marriott Hotels. We knew what the quality and standards are when you stay with a Marriott Hotel. This Fairfield Inn does not even come close. We never felt the need to look at reviews for staying at Marriott’s, it was always great. After staying here we will look at reviews from here on out. We would never recommend this place to anyone.
(Not much space to write, some of our complaints are briefly listed below)
*Our first impression upon arriving at the hotel, it definitely looks like an old cheap painted building, nothing like any Marriott we’ve stayed at before.
*As we walked in the Gen. Mgr. was walking out, she kicked outside a very large palmetto roach from the inside lobby door.
*The lobby is very dark, old carpets, has heavy unpleasant fragrant odors.
*2 dolly’s that were old, dirty, falling apart, and wheels are hard to push
The elevators were dirty, and had the same strong, sour, fragrant odors as the lobby and the hallways
*Open our room door and are hit with a sour, strong mold, mildew, smell. On the wall the pictures had mold spots on and in the frames.
*The AC was running but the room still felt sticky and humid
*The room was not particularly clean and on the floor carpet near the bathroom was what looked like a big blood spot.
*I have allergies and so does one of my sons, we could not breathe in mold all night for 3 nights. The smell was sickening and the strong fragrant odor obviously was to mask the mold and mildew, very ineffectively, a gross combination
*We checked out son's room (they fly in later) you are immediately hit with a mix of mold, mildew, and cat pee smells. This room was worse than ours if that is possible.
*We decided we could not sleep here and breathe in mold, etc.. in was unsafe, unhealthy to stay here, whether you had allergies or not.
*We decided to go down outside to our truck to decide what to do. As we were leaving the desk clerk (very nice) asked how was your rooms, I did not know what to say, so I just said very musty, strong odors. She said would you like your room to be re-cleaned, I said no we just checked in the room should already be cleaned.
*Once outside we decided we can’t stay here, got in truck drove down the road and in about 15 min. found another Marriott Hotel, The Courtyard. Went inside, the lobby was light, fresh and clean. We embarrassingly explained our situation. The desk clerk was sympathetic and offered us 2 rooms there. Told us to take the keys and check out the rooms first. We did, the rooms were large, clean, fresh smelling, AC on point. Felt such relief to be there.
*We hopped in our truck, drove back to Fairfield Inn, nervous and stressed. My husband grabbed a dolly and went up to get our stuff out of the room. I stayed to talk to the desk clerk, told her sorry but we can not stay in these rooms. We will need to check out. She asked why I said because the rooms are not clean, or safe to sleep in. They have a heavy horrible smell of whatever fragrance they are using to mask the underlying issues of mold and mildew. Can’t do that for 3 nights, 2 of us have allergies, and even if you didn’t it would not be fit to stay here. She got the Gen. Mgr. who told me to take another room, that all the floors do not smell, just every other one, go up and check. I told her sorry but we do not want another room. We need to check out, she said so you won’t go check another room. I said no we checked 2 rooms, neither were fit. This whole facility smells of heavy strong odors/smells. She said well you’re not gonna get your money back, our corporate office is a stickler for rules. I said we have not even stayed in the room, 10 min. to load into room and 10 min. to unload. Your management needs to know of the mold/odors in this place and that sometimes people have allergies, this place smells. I am hoping your management will work with us on this.
*I went up to help my husband with the luggage, and did as the Mgr. said and stopped on every floor, all of which looked just as unclean as my floor and had the same disgusting odors. It became clear to me that all the heavy fragrance was to try unsuccessfully to block or mask the underlying mold and mildew smells that were everywhere.
*Had we stayed longer I have no doubt we would have been sick and found even more unsavory issues with this hotel. If anyone reading this does not want to take my word for it then just take a look at "all the reviews” for this place from at least the past 3-4 years on Yelp, Google, and Tripadvisor. There has been a multitude of complaints, of many guests who were poorly treated, and few if any at all got restitution for staying in or walking out like we did from this horrible hotel that is environmentally unsafe. I am not convinced that the handful of decent reviews that are out there are not done by them or their friends, because no one can be that blind to all the problems there.
*Sadly this hotel bares the name of Marriott and is nowhere near their standards. Marriott should stop ignoring the complaints of many and not allow this hotel to continue to tarnish their good name and reputation. *Please do yourself a favor and do not book a room here. Currently we never received the bill or a receipt, very unlike a Marriott, but we were charged $794.39 for 5 nights and we never stayed 1. The manager is hard to reach and does not admit the problems and said he would give us 5000 points for our issues, which works out to about $22.00. We keep saying to ourselves this can't be a Marriott......
