Rodeway Inn Wahpeton

I have never seen a front desk like this. I looked like a dump. The clerk was able to walk in, but barely. The pool area was locked and did not look inviting, so I did not request access. The room is good enough. And having come from visiting people with tiny beds, we are grateful. If it had not been for the front desk are, I could have been more generous in the rating. They can clean that up in an hour.

We only stayed one night. Nothing special about it. It was a good rate, nothing special about breakfast, wasn't much to choose from at 9:00 a.m. No one to restock was even around. But it was a quiet motel.

There were so many things wrong with this stay. If you can get past the overwhelming smell, the rooms don't suck (for the price point), but the customer service is laughable. The highlight for me was returning after a long day (the second of a 2-night stay) and my key not working. I stood at the front desk for more than 20 minutes. First, I tried calling, hoping the phone was connected to a cordless carried by the desk clerk. Nothing. Called the number on the sign from the lobby phone, but nothing. Knocked on the glass hoping someone on the other side of the door would come out, nothing. During my wait, a second guest came who was also locked out of a 2nd-night stay. A third guest, needing to check in joined us in our wait. When the owner FINALLY returned from outside, she told me that my key was "not her problem" and said it was my fault, and she "knew" I put it next to my phone and ruined it. (the key was kept in the sleeve the entire time and most definitely not on my phone) A simple "sorry for the inconvenience, let me rekey that for you" would have been the appropriate response. The dismissal and accusations seemed to come to her so easily that I'm sure I wasn't the first to experience her stellar customer service. Yes, it's cheap, but just spend the extra $20 and stay anywhere else in town.

The bedroom was big and the beds were comfortable. The WiFi was stable and strong.

The staff were rude and hardly spoke any English. They claimed that our booking was not complete even though we had completed our booking on Booking.com and we had our confirmation with us. It looked like the couple running the place lived in the premises because we saw the gentleman who checked us in walking around in pyjamas in the morning barefoot. We found some hair on the beds sheets and pillows. And they didn't say good bye or thank you when we checked out.
