Henley Park Hotel

I recently stayed at the Henley Park Hotel while visiting from Virginia Beach for a basketball game at Capital One Arena on March 21st. While the overall trip was wonderful—the weather was beautiful and our team won—the hotel stay unfortunately fell far below expectations. We arrived around 1:00–1:30 PM and completed the check-in process early, fully understanding that standard check-in is at 3:00 PM. We were told we would receive a call when our rooms were ready, which seemed perfectly reasonable. We spent some time exploring the area and returned shortly after 3:00 PM, assuming our rooms would be available by then. However, we were told that neither of our two booked rooms was ready. After waiting in the lobby for about 20 minutes, we were finally given access to one room around 3:45 PM. The second room was still not ready, despite us being told it would be available “shortly.” This was particularly stressful given that we had a 5:00 PM game to attend. When we checked on the second room, housekeeping had only just begun cleaning it and estimated another 30–45 minutes. At that point, due to time constraints, we requested a different room. The staff’s response was disappointing—they were noticeably dismissive and lacked any sense of urgency or empathy. Considering we paid over $230 per room plus $50 for valet parking, the lack of professionalism was surprising. Unfortunately, the issues did not end there. The room we were given had several problems: The temperature was uncomfortably warm and humid (78°F upon entry), and despite adjusting the thermostat, it never properly cooled. The bed comforter was damp, which was extremely off-putting. The bathroom doorstop was broken and hanging off the door. The sink water continuously sputtered rather than flowing normally. While I understand this is an older hotel and can allow for some wear and tear, these issues—combined with the earlier delays—made the stay frustrating. What stood out most, however, was the lack of customer service. At no point did the staff express genuine concern or attempt to make the situation right. Additionally, there were small but telling inconveniences, such as the absence of a public trash can in the lobby. When we tried to dispose of trash before valet parking our car, we had to hand it to the front desk staff, who did so with visible annoyance. Overall, while the hotel itself has a beautiful aesthetic, the experience felt disorganized, uncomfortable, and lacking in basic hospitality. For the price paid, I do not feel we received an experience that justified the cost. I would not recommend staying here.
