Hotel Villa Carlton - Adults Only

Very helpful staff. Room was very quiet and well equipped with plug points - people nowadays want to travel with and charge laptops, mobile phones, etc.. We liked the quirky and immaculate decor.

We understood a minimal breakfast was offered and were happy with that. One minor annoyance was that on the 2 days we were there, the coffee machine was broken; a sign indicated filter coffee was available, but the jugs presumably there for the purpose were empty, so there was only hot water with teabags or coffee granules. Disappointing.

A more inclusive breakfast would have been nice. Fruit isn't hard.

The hotel has a great location, and the staff were very friendly. The room was large and quiet. The bathroom was spacious, with a great walk-in shower. A big problem for me was the fact that there were no overhead light sources in the room, only a number of low-wattage lamps. The room was like a crypt at night. I did not enjoy being in the room at all in the evenings. I could not see anything. Likewise, I would have loved to have had a mini-fridge to store fresh things, but the room didn’t have one. The free breakfast included breads, but no hot items. The biggest problem with this hotel is that the reception is not manned after 7 pm. So, if you forget your key, you’re screwed. They only give you one key during check-in and that key is necessary to power the room. So, if you don’t remember to take your key from the power box, then big problems can arise, as occurred to me. I left for dinner at 8 pm one evening and forgot to take the key out of the box. There is a phone number to call in such situations. As a North American, I had never called a European number before. I tried several times, but could not connect to it. I waited nervously in the lobby for about 20 minutes before some other guests arrived. Luckily, they were Austrian and were able to get through to the emergency number. We were given instructions on how to access a master key from a lock box outside the hotel. This allowed me to get into my room and access my own room key. I suppose that an unethical person might have been able to access all of the rooms with this master key, and so I don’t consider this to be a good solution. In any case, I was only able to get back into my room due the kindness of other guests who I had to wait for patiently in the lobby to arrive and rescue me. This creates a very precarious situation for guests. Despite the hotel’s many good features, I would not stay here again due to the lock-out risk.

This is a theme hotel with lovely paintings and modern art at every turn. The staff were always keen to please and have created a happy hotel. We've been across Europe for the last 2 weeks and this is the best hotel we've stayed in 😁

Nobody mentioned the huge bier Keller across the river until our last night. 🍻
