Hotel Carmel

We had a lovely one-night stay that left us feeling quite content. The staff was incredibly friendly, making us feel welcomed from the moment we arrived. It was great to find the pier just a short walk away, allowing us to enjoy some beautiful time by the water. Plus, the nearby restaurant, which offers a nice discount to guests for breakfast, surprised us with its delicious food. Overall, it was a delightful experience!

I’ve never been to a hotel that does not have a refrigerator. I guess I didn’t read the fine print. I saw many asking for ice. I would think there would be an ice machine area

First - I would never normally book a hotel with low 3/5 ratings across most platforms, but the more I read, the more I felt they were just plain unfair. And I'm glad I trusted my gut. This place is great. Honestly, its hard to find a hotel anywhere nice in LA for less than 400-500, as a starting point (prices in CAD). I paid $200 for this hotel. Right there, you need to lower your expectations - you have perfect location already, so you hope for clean and quit rooms and good service. And they get top marks in those categories. The first Thursday afternoon we arrived, I thought our AC wasn't working and the room was hot. I talked to reception (this receptionist was outstanding, incredibly efficient young woman) and she was doing all she could. Promised to send maintenance to our room and look for a new room. Maintenance arrived about 30 seconds after I got back and explained how to work the AC (oops 😉, my bad). Worked perfectly. Reception called 5 minutes later to double check we were OK. The rooms have nice keurig coffee (4 pods regular, 2 decaf & 2 tea). Body wash and a shampoo/conditioner combination in shower (which I can't stand but is totally normal in hotels, unfortunately!). You're right in downtown Santa Monica - we walked to and from Venice Beach (a beautiful 44min walk) yesterday. In the evening we went to the celebrity favourite restaurant Giorgio Baldi in Malibu and walked back (43min). Or stay in downtown Santa Monica! We tried Beef and The Lobster (meh, fine - former better than the latter), around the corner. Tons of football fans (real football, not America football) staying at the hotel, because of the World Cup of Clubs (which is why we were there), but definitely not a rowdy or party atmosphere. Seriously, take a chance and ignore the silly and completely unfair reviews. You're not walking into a 5 star hotel, but it checks all the boxes, and in my view is under-priced.

Clean room, amazing location! Rooms were updated but the hallway and lobby were dingy and definitely looked like they’ve never been updated.

My family of 2 adults and 2 kids stayed at 8 hotels over the course of a 17 day CA road trip ranging from budget to high end. Hotel Carmel was the most expensive with fees and my least favorite. Location was good near pier and room was clean but the AC didn't work, few outlets in the room. Lacked features of even budget hotels and nothing special to justify cost. $35 plus tax for parking, $23 resort fee but no amenities. Way overpriced for what it was. Only hotel on trip that I wouldn't book again.

Was pleasantly surprised by the property. Such a short walk to the beach for the price you absolutely can't Beat It. The only thing is parking is an extra charge but for $35 you get valet and they get your car for you whenever you need it. I'll stay again and I do recommend
