HOSHINOYA Guguan

Hoshinoya is a very charming boutique resort; nested in the mountainous GuGuan valley, and about 1 to 1.5hrs drive from TaiChung HSR. This resort is up on a little hill; has lots of beautiful landscapes, and sits behind the Shaolai trial (about 900m to first elevated level; entrance is conveniently located next to resort). We are a family of 4. Room comes with 2 luxurious king size beds, a huge family living hall, 1 resting balcony, 2 toilets, 1 shower room (which extends to an onsen and overlooking the MaLun mountain. Functional design of our room was above our expectations. Enjoyed our stay with their yugata, jap footwear, and phone pouch! Garden setting is beautiful for strolls. Impressive menu for AM and PM, and food is fresh. Love the resort in-house activities. Ranging from walk to town, night yoga, morning green tea, afternoon cocktails, etc. Staff here is a big plus to the resort branding, and they can multitask very well! Very friendly, attentive to our needs, and detailed in work. YunQi showed us on day of arrival with lots of warm gestures, Yue & Liu brought us for morning street tour with care and explanations, Cindy was passionate in teaching the night yoga. Thanks all for making our stay so wonderful. Truly a 5 star rated resort!

I stayed at Room 205 where the view was disappointing. The grass outside my window wall was dying and desperately needed landscaping. Thinking about the price I paid and looking at the grass pissed me off!! Inside wasn’t much better - bulged and stained carpet created an unpleasant atmosphere. If you stay in Room 205 you also get the pleasure of looking at the driveway and see all the cars coming in the hotel. This hotel is totally overrated! Try to book the highest floor you can get…good luck to all!

I like the hot spring in this property. But there are many areas this property is very poor design and managed. 1. Restaurant is not providing enough foods. As the high priced property, there is no food available while I stayed there. There is only drink in the room, no snack, no food in this property . Restaurant is closed and providing no food at all. I have to wait when they are opened. I will suggest future visitors to bring their own food while stay this property. To be hungry at that rural location is not good vacation at all. 3. Not safe to stay. My husband failed down in the stairs in the room. There are many stairs in the room. The black color make room so dark. The elevator is more like ghost place. In this property, everywhere is dark and black color. I don't like to stay in such dark place in my vacation. Overall we feel it's not good vacation for us at all. We were hungry with no food service and worry to fail in the room all the time.

What a surprise and delight to arrive at this exclusive and secluded spa- retreat outside the beaten track. Wonderful and attentive service, comfortable rooms with hot-tub, a separate spa with treatments and hot water pool - and not to forget the exquisite japanese inspired cuisine! I am at loss for words. This place is the best hotel I have ever stayed in. It has everything you could wish for and more. They have an amazing inside and outside onsen, 24 hour ice cream, and everything is beautiful. There are lots of fun activities to do such as forest in a bottle where you make a miniature plant display. This place is the best.

We had a very thorough check in service, where they explain everything about the place, your room and onsen etc. I would have given 5 stars, however, the food options were just a too limited for us, and there was no restaurant availability for our first night which was really disappointing so we had to make do with the in room dining options. Also, it would have been nice to know they were able to do breakfast a la carte (which was really nice of them to do this for us in the end, but we didn't know up front) - sometimes you don't want such a lot of food in the morning. Also the surrounding area is quite built up, so although the hotel is beautiful, you can see a lot of other buildings (from our room at least).

Amazing spot for a quick family vacation. Lunch and snack options are lacking, especially compared to other Ryokans in Japan, but excellent breakfast and dinner quality.
