Minshuku Shiroyama

Typical Japanese local minshuku. Clean.

We had a new room and it was better than expected. The onsen is older but I enjoyed the outside section.

The property is not in a town, so eating options are limited. However, we enjoyed the full service dinner.

The property is in the countryside but it has a bus-stop which is 6 mins walk away with 2 daily buses that goes to Taketa train station where you can catch the train to Mt. Aso or to Kumamoto. It is really quiet and is connected to an onsen shared for public use. The room is large and comfortable and dinner was local specialties with substantial servings and courses. Free tea and coffee was also available for guests. The owner was very warm and helpful as we were delayed coming to the property and when we had to depart before breakfast, he made us onigiri to take along for breakfast.

Not easy to reach due to the 2x buses per day and train connection. Calling for a cab was a challenge as well as we could not even book a cab for the next morning. If you’re driving this will help a lot in getting to and from this property. However, it is in a very nice rural area and quiet.

Room and futons were very comfortable. Breakfast was amazing and plenty of food. The onsen was nice to have indoors and outdoors. Owner was very nice. Very easy to find the location.
