The Golden Lion Inn

Friendly helpful staff, no cleanliness issues, great value for money including an excellent breakfast. Plenty of places to eat out nearby ...... Cantonese, Indian, Italian, The room, Platform 3 was railway themed and spacious.

Car parking was a nightmare, only six bays to the rear of the Inn. Cannot park on the High St. on Friday night due to the Saturday market setting up at 5.00 am. Had to park in the Town centre car park (£5.00) nearly a mile away. The single beds in the room need replacing or upgrading ~ very firm and way too narrow. They are suitable for a child or teenager, but not suitable for a six foot adult male, resulting in a poor nights sleep.

Proper pub in a lovely old building with rooms above. Room itself was spacious, Providing tea and coffee making and toiletries in bathroom which was good with a reasonably sized shower. Good selection for breakfast. Great location in High Street with parking at the rear.

Each room has its own theme given over to individual professional designers. I've happily stayed in two, one with GWR decor, yhe other art deco. Wonderful. . Everything else does what it says on the box. But hang out in the pub. That's what makes this place reallyl. Proper diverse bunch of garrulous locals who welcome you into the jolliness you always hope to find in a pub and when you do feel suitably inclined to say thank you (sorry can't be there for the independent band gig May 23rd). Hence this review.

The room was comfortable as was the bed. Reception was cheery. I had the large breakfast which was too large for me, very delicious and very good value. The pub is just inside the town gate and in a very good position for shops and restaurants.
