Palihotel San Diego Gaslamp Quarter

The safe is nice.

I understand this is a historic building, but operating an 11-story hotel with only one functional elevator is unacceptable. The hotel has two elevators, but one was completely out of service during our stay, leaving a single small elevator to serve the entire building. When we arrived, even that elevator was being repaired and we were told we might have to walk 10 flights of stairs to reach our room. Fortunately, it came back online just before we started climbing. Unfortunately, the elevator issues continued throughout our stay. The lone working elevator was frequently occupied by staff, crowded with guests, delayed for long periods, or simply unavailable. As a result, we had to walk 10 flights of stairs twice, including carrying all of our luggage down at checkout because the elevator never arrived. The repeated trips up and down the stairs carrying luggage left my shoulders and lower back sore for days afterward. I came for a relaxing vacation and left feeling more exhausted than refreshed. The room was also much smaller than the photos made it appear, and the AC unit rattled loudly throughout the night, making it difficult to sleep. Being located in the Gaslamp District, the hotel is also extremely noisy with sirens, traffic, loud music, and people outside well into the night. For the price we paid, there are far better options nearby with larger rooms, reliable elevators, quieter accommodations, and a more comfortable overall experience.
