McMenamins Elks Temple

The interior is fun with a lot of history. The art is funky, in a good way. We had a large room on the 6th floor with a balcony over the Spanish Steps and a view of the water. The bed was comfortable, the AC worked well. Great water flow in the shower. Free coffee in the morning. Many bars and restaurants to choose from in the building. Good food! Good location. Rail line stops there (didn't use it) and shops and restaurants are two blocks down the hill. The staff is so friendly!!! Julie (front desk) upgraded us without asking. I would go back to Tacoma just to stay there again, but without a car!

The parking is practically non existent. The free coffee from the 6th floor was weak and luke warm. However, the coffee in The Pub was good, strong and hot. The lighting in the room is very dim.

We loved the Tiki bar in the basement. There’s lots and lots of stairs. No place to park. We parked in a lot below the hotel. Climbed lots of stairs to get to the hotel. It has beautiful decorations. Great food. Getting to your hotel room requires stairs. The hallways seem claustrophobic. If climbing stairs and enclosed spaces don’t bother you it’s a fun hotel. There was a secret bar on our floor. Opened the door it was a narrow room full of people with no windows. It would be really fun there to go there for Halloween. If narrow spaces with no windows bother you then this place is probably not it. Maybe go there for the good food and leave.

We only stayed one night because we were in town for a concert, so we didn’t utilize all the amenities this place has to offer. The food at the ground floor bar/restaurant was good but service was slow - friendly staff though. I would return to stay if I ever visit Tacoma again and would like to check out all the bars!
