When my sister and I were invited to a wedding in Montignano, I wanted us to experience as true an Italian experience as possible. Elisa, her husband Fabrizio and their family made doubly certain we were left with priceless memories of that. Elisa is the most wonderful host, and it is clear to see that this is not just a business, but a labour of love. She and Fabrizio collected us from the bus stop when we arrived in Todi – and later that evening, drove us to and from Montignano – and helped us in every way to feel at home. While there was a language barrier for two Irish people, Elisa was very patient in explaining everything, with no request too big or too small, and she was always at the other end of the phone if we needed her. The breakfast was hearty and well-presented at a time agreed by both of us, and Elisa stayed with us on both mornings to get to know us while she tended to her animals. When Fabrizio's parents came to tend to their vegetable patch, they were only too happy to explain how their side of the farm worked. While Il Truffarello is also advertised as an educational farm, we didn't get to see it in action, but Elisa was happy to explain how it worked. The rooms were well laid-out and furnished, and the beds were very comfortable. The kitchen was well-stocked and fitted with an induction hob, and the garden was covered with various trees, herbs and plants, including olive oil pressed from olives grown right in the garden. Il Truffarello is a perfect showcase of living in nature and traditional Italian values, which left us with breathtaking views and memories that will last a lifetime. Elisa, Fabrizio and family, thank you for extending such exceptional hospitality, and we look forward to returning in the future!

Our only regrets were that our time at Il Truffarello was too short and we did not rent a car. Returning in future, we would have rented a car or bicycle, as we would have been able to see more of the area. However, for the time we had, Elisa recommended more than enough things to do in the immediate area that did involve needing either, so we were definitely spoiled for choice with things to see in our time away from Montignano. The hamlet of Ripaioli and village of Pantalla were well worth the visit, and had we more time, we would also have visited Cacciano and other local landmarks. We would also return to learn more about the area and its traditions, as well as the traditional methods of Italian agriculture which are so wonderfully brought to life here.
