Rambas Reserve

Rambas Reserve is a passion project by husband-and-wife team Priyani and Nalanka. They care deeply about preserving Sri Lanka's precious wet zone environment and have created a tranquil, private space nestled between waterfalls deep in the rainforest to help visitors experience nature up close. I went with a friend I hadn't seen in years for a girl's trip. We were searching for a relaxing getaway and got it. We spotted rare birds and threatened purple face monkeys, heard frogs and cicadas, and shared our open-air bathroom with a giant snail. I caught up on reading while it rained and enjoyed the crystal-clean natural pool when the sun came out. My friend and I enjoyed wine (byob) by the tea estate while overlooking Adam's Peak and had scrumptious meals throughout. Although you're in a rainforest, your room feels like an oasis with beautiful textiles, creature comforts, and thoughtful touches. Pictures do not do this place justice -- we decided to extend our stay to two days after arriving. The hosts and staff are kind and generous, and you feel the love it took to build such a special place off the beaten path. There is simply no place like it -- the beauty of Ella without the crowd, a stone's throw from Colombo but a world away.

It had just rained when we arrived, making the access road quite muddy and slippery. A Jeep/ four-wheel drive vehicle with some clearance would be extremely helpful. Priyani and Nalanka graciously picked us up from the carpark and dropped us back, but the journey there was tricky at times. Travel light. Leeches come out after it rains, so use the leech socks provided and don't wear mesh shoes or yoga pants if you hike. There is no credit-card reader or WiFi, so bring cash or pay by wire transfer.
