I made a reservation at this hotel for the night of December 22nd. I made it there shortly after 6 PM that night but found that this hotel required a $100 cash deposit (wouldn't take a debit or credit card for that). I reserved the room for $73 including tax. I was short of the $100 cash for this deposit. The clerk pointed to an ATM in the lobby. I tried it but could not get any cash out of it. Instead I got a receipt showing the balance which I already knew roughly (and I had plenty in the balance). If I needed the balance of my account, I could easily look that up on my smartphone. This ATM is tied to a bank apparently in India, and I was charged $3 for using this machine that did nothing but gave me a receipt of my checking account balance. I tried to get cash elsewhere at a Kroger which I am familiar with. Tried to make a purchase with cash back but was unsuccessful due to the card reader there stating a chip malfunction which caused my debit card being blocked. A miserable night in Roanoke! Gave up staying in Roanoke and ended up driving more than three hours to my destination. Should have gotten refunded due to the problems I had coming up with the cash deposit. I stayed at another Super 8 in Appomattox, VA back in September that required a $50 deposit which that one accepted a debit card for that. Got refunded that deposit. Why a $100 cash deposit at this hotel when the other one I stayed at earlier only required a $50 deposit that was accepted on a debit card? Since I wasn't able to stay at this hotel, I don't have an opinion of the room I reserved. However, I have read later the reviews of what other recent customers have reported of the poor conditions of the rooms at this hotel. Based on my experience with this hotel, I will NOT make another reservation at a Super 8 hotel again!
