Amazing hotel, great staff, beautiful rooms and garden. It’s a must !

Nothing to dislike !

This estate is an incredible oasis with a 17 hectares garden. Staying here as the only guests felt magical. Designed by the legendary Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa for friends who were artists, the use of light and space in the estate is incredible, with the main house consisting of two suites full of modern art and antiques. Bawa later designed in the 1990s the incredible gardens, which are over 17 hectares and include sculptures throughout, bridges across the massive lake, a big mangrove forest, the ruins of a chapel, and other artworks. Walking the grounds felt like being in your own fantastical world . The caretaker was lovely and made us a delicious massive spread for breakfast that he served in the garden in front of the lake , with homemade juices, multiple curry, milk rice and other delicacies. He also made us tea throughout our visit. The management for the estate was reachable via Whatsapp. Staying here felt like stepping into Bawa's world and was so much more rewarding and unique than some of the neighboring Bawa-designed hotels. There's letters and pictures with Bawa on the walls and items from his archives. An iconic stay for any architecture or Bawa fans.

Basic amenities but didn't bother us. One thing is you need to pay in cash, which was not immediately clear. As this is essentially a private villa with a caretaker, things will be a bit slower than a hotel but it contributed to the dreamy feel of the place.

The quality of the toiletries could have been better.

This is a beautiful historic property by one of Sri Lanka‘s most famous landscape architects. The beauty of the property is unmatched.  Breakfast was delicious, but one should confirm the order in which you like it presented. 

There were few amenities for the modern traveler. The bathroom was clearly meant for a tall man. I needed help to get the shampoo and body wash down from a very high shelf. The towels smelled of mildew. There was no garbage can in the bathroom, clearly not understanding the needs of women.  The lighting in the rooms  and the electrical outlets were clearly for another time.  Although the staff were overly attentive, their time management was very poor. Our 8:15 AM breakfast was served at 8:45 AM, which ordinarily would not be a problem, but our driver was waiting.
