"Poorly Treated at Check-in and Check-out"

6.0

Everything about the hotel itself was great. The room, air conditioning, the restaurant, the location were all wonderful. However, the staff at reception were not very friendly and only seemed interested in getting more money from me. I booked the room online. At check-in we found out that we were assigned a room without an outside window. It only had a window facing the interior hallway so the room was dark and without fresh air. The window to the hall also made us feel insecure. Anyone could force it open. When we asked to move to another room they said it was not possible even though the hotel was mostly empty. The man who carried our luggage to the room told us that they give this room to people who book with an online travel agency. We refused to accept the room so they offered us a room with a window for a significantly higher price. We grudgingly agreed to pay it. Then when I handed them my credit card they said they don’t accept cards even though my reservation specifically said we could pay the hotel by credit card. This whole discussion was made more difficult by the fact that nobody could speak Englishamd my Portuguese is very basic. This was surprising in a four-star hotel in the main square of the capital city. When we checked out they said we could pay in local West African Francs or euros. I handed the woman at reception all my remaining local currency. I was short by the equivalent of two euros so I gave her a 5 euro note to makeup the difference. She said that it was not enough and asked for ten euros. After arguing with her for ten minutes about the terrible exchange rate I gave up and handed her the ten euros. I did not leave the hotel in a good mood.

"Bleak. Uninviting."

4.0

Often expensive hotels in West Africa appear gloomy, dull or uninviting. This applies very strongly to the Imperio Hotel. An elevator will take you to your floor, you arrive in a dark hallway, everything is greyish and bleak. The rooms are quite small, they are not at all charming. They give a sombre impression, but luckily the view is nice. The wifi is very slow. The air-conditioning did not work in my room. The staff was quite friendly, but when I asked if they could return my laundry within 12 hours they refused and said it would take at least a day or two. This I found quite strange. The food is of good and the restaurant offers a great view. But there are many other places in the area with same quality meals, but much cheaper. The restaurant service was excellent and the staff were very friendly. I know there are limited high-end options in Bissau. Still, this place wasn't to my liking.

"New hotel close to the Presidential Palace"

6.0

It is not a bad hotel. Just a new hotel opened in Sept-Oct 2016. The rooms are OK, at least those that have views to the square and the Presidential Palace, or those that look to the other side. They also have some inner rooms which don't have window,, so they are not very recommeded. As it is a new hotel, everything is OK. The double bed could be a bit bigger, as there is plenty of room in the room. The bathroom is also OK. I stood in the hotel twice, just one night each, and in the first one I got a tube in the bathroom, which was OK (but a bit dangerous as it is very high and you have to use a small ladder to get in and out of the tube), but in the second I just got a shower and the plate was really small and hard to move and have a confortable shower. The other problem is that internet (wifi service) didn't work at all (not the first night nor the last one, ten days after !!!!). The service is normal, not good not bad. They are young but don't speak languages, neither spanish nor english, so communication was a bit difficult. At least, the air conditioner worked, which was great because of the hot weather in the capital. The best: the situation. It is close to the financial area and embassies. The Spanish embassy is just beside the hotel. The breakfast is served in the main floor and it is quite OK. They also have a restaurant and a bakery at the terrace, which is always full of local people having they dinner. I suppose that that is the standard of an African hotel, but I wouldn't give it a 4 star rate, because the service and the quality is more close to a 3 star. But it is a clean place, which is great.

"Imperio"

Very good hotel - with good location. Employees are very friendly and helpful. I recommend it. Rooms are clean and each room has air condition, which helps a lot - considering the temperatures in April.

"Beautiful place and good food"

8.0

This place is located straight in the city centre opposite the presidential parlor. The stuff is friendly and welcoming, the view from above is very beautiful and makes it worth the visit at night. The food is really nice, you can tell that the chef is learning basic culinary. The food was really nice though much more different than a lot of the places we have been to in Bissau.

"Unique view at Bissau"

10.0

This is the most central hotel in Bissau oppened 3 months ago with average costs. The standard rooms are quite good, with excellent bed, good looking furniture, with silent AC and equiped with a 30 inches led TV with variety of channels. The bathroon is large with hot water and very clean. The breakfast was quite ok with varieties of fruits, bread, eggs, meat and excellent pastries made in the hotel. Didn't try the restaurant, located in the 6th floor with the best view possible in Bissau. Like the other hotels I stayed in Bissau, the wifi was poor in the rooms but when connected at the lobby was the faster signal I've ever had at Bissau. The surprise was the staff, very friendly and following european standards, always asking if you need something or helping you getting what you want. The hotel manager was always around checking all details and staff behavior. The hotel don't have exterior área or swimming pool. I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel and would recommend it for a business trip.
