BrookLodge & Macreddin Village

Stayed for two nights recently and really enjoyed it. BrookLodge & Macreddin Village is a large, characterful property with a relaxed countryside feel. The buildings are full of charm and there are open fires everywhere which make the place feel really cosy. Check-in was smooth and professional when we arrived around 7:30pm. The staff suggested the bar for dinner instead of the more formal Strawberry Tree restaurant which was a great recommendation. The staff there were excellent and the soup and steak they recommended were both delicious, especially with a few very good pints of Guinness. My room was spacious and the mattress was comfortable. Breakfast was nice with great pastries, fruit and juices/smoothies. Checkout was also quick and easy. One thing to be aware of is the location. The hotel is quite remote and about a 90-minute drive from Dublin Airport with very little immediately nearby. Because of this, I would strongly recommend renting a car, it will likely work out cheaper than relying on taxis and also gives you the flexibility to explore the surrounding area. The hotel can provide contact numbers for some local taxi drivers, but you are responsible for arranging transport yourself and there’s no guarantee drivers will be available when you need them. It would be very easy to get stranded if you haven’t made transport plans, especially if you’re staying here but attending a wedding or event at another venue "nearby". Walking isn’t really an option either, the surrounding roads are narrow, winding country lanes and not pedestrian-friendly. Overall though, it’s a lovely place to stay with great staff, lots of character, good food and a relaxed atmosphere.

The Irish breakfast tasted good but could have been a little more generous in portion size. The mattress was comfortable but the bed might be a bit short if you’re taller than about 6ft 2. The room was like a furnace and I couldn't figure our how to turn down the heating.

A couple of small things. The UHD milk in the room was out of date, the toilet brush was broken, and maybe a post-winter lick of paint all round but don't get me wrong, we had an excellent time.

Great place for a short getaway. The hotel itself and its surroundings are just perfect for switching off and relaxing.

Breakfast continues to be an issue when we visit. The staff are for the most part pleasant but our order was wrong 3 times and eventually we gave up in asking for what we wanted.
