Zanzibar Serena Hotel

Workers were very accommodating

I stayed at the Zanzibar Serena Hotel for one night. Due to a late arrival, I unfortunately did not have the opportunity to make use of the hotel’s facilities. The location is beautiful and very well positioned in Stone Town. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and helpful throughout my stay, which I appreciated.

That said, I do not feel the property reflects a true 5-star standard, particularly when compared to other hotels in the area marketed at a similar level. The hotel feels quite dated overall. The rooms are small, especially the bathrooms, and the pillows were uncomfortable, resulting in a headache and backache the following morning. Breakfast was average, around a 6/10, with a limited selection. Considering the price paid, I expected a higher level of comfort and overall experience.

Very well situated on the beach, a short walk to the city centre and yet only 15 minutes drive from the airport, the hotel has managed to successfully capture the soul and essence of Zanzibar.

This was in an excellent location, right on the beach and was a great place to base ourselves. The staff were very welcoming and inviting, happily providing any assistance if required. Facilities were good - great pool (if you did not want to swim in the ocean) and well located restaurant overlooking the beach. The hotel itself is interesting with quite a history and lots to see of that history if you have the time.

Room was a little tired although clean. We had some nonfunctioning power outlets but the staff attended to this quickly. Very minor issue with the room key - the room key tag was too big to practically take with you so had to leave and pick up at front desk each time.

Mooi zwembad, prima locatie

We kozen – ondanks de absurd hoge prijs in vergelijking met andere accommodaties – voor dit hotel om onze vakantie in luxe af te sluiten. In de advertentie op Booking.com werd als highlight vermeld dat er gratis vervoer naar het vliegveld inbegrepen was. Dat leek ons een mooie extra en speelde een belangrijke rol in onze keuze. Om niet voor verrassingen te komen staan, heb ik vóór onze vakantie contact opgenomen met het hotel om te bevestigen dat de transfers inderdaad gratis waren, zoals in de advertentie stond. Toen werd mij duidelijk gemaakt dat dit absoluut niet het geval was; ze konden het wél regelen, maar voor 40 euro. Ik gaf aan dat het toch duidelijk op Booking stond vermeld. Het antwoord was dat zij daar niets aan konden doen en dat ik dit maar bij Booking moest navragen. Ik reageerde nog dat het toch niet aan mij is om te controleren of de aanbiedingen op de platforms waar zíj gebruik van maken wel juist vermeld staan. Maar er viel niets aan te veranderen. Bij aankomst in het hotel heb ik gevraagd of ik de manager kon spreken. De receptionist belde hem meteen, maar hij was in gesprek en zou later naar ons toekomen. Dat was rond het middaguur. Toen we om 17.00 uur richting Stone Town vertrokken, hadden we nog steeds niets van hem gehoord. ’s Avonds, bij terugkomst, vroeg de receptionist opnieuw of het inmiddels was opgelost — maar dat was natuurlijk niet zo. Omdat we vroeg moesten uitchecken, vroeg ik of we de volgende ochtend een ontbijtbox konden meekrijgen. Je raadt het al: die stond niet klaar. En als je je als klant al zo behandeld voelt, ga je automatisch ook andere dingen negatiever ervaren. De kleine porties bij de lunch voor hoge prijzen, een flesje water dat drie keer zoveel kost als elders, een vies toilet bij het zwembad en een piepkleine douche op de kamer. Uiteindelijk hebben we zelf een taxi geregeld voor 10 euro — iets dat het hotel waarschijnlijk voor een veel lager bedrag had kunnen organiseren. Kortom: een grote tegenvaller.
