"Great Value Family Holiday"

8.0

We (my wife and two teenage sons, aged 19 and 16) have just returned from a fantastic two-week stay at Viva Azteca by Wyndham in Playacar. This was our first time in Mexico, and overall, it didn’t disappoint. We knew from the outset that this wasn’t a luxury hotel, but it exceeded our expectations. The all-inclusive offering is solid – good food (albeit a little repetitive), great drinks and all at a much more reasonable price than comparable resorts in Spain or Turkey. There’s a lot to like. The hotel has plenty of facilities but is nicely compact, so it’s never a long trek back to your room from the pool or beach. El Cenote, the pool bar, is a real highlight both visually and as a spot for lunch or a cool afternoon drink. We also really enjoyed the relatively new Café Jaguar, which offers a comfortable, air-conditioned break from the heat. The hotel’s location within the gated Playacar community gives a real sense of safety and security, with a few great bars and shops nearby. Plus, it’s easy to get into central Playa del Carmen or take the ferry to Cozumel. We didn’t give a full five-star review simply because there are a few things the hotel could improve. The solarium area is quite small, with limited shaded beds. This leads to a bit of a scramble for sunbeds early in the morning with 6am starts becoming a bit of a routine. While some staff attempt to enforce a policy around reserving beds (removing towels and belongings), it’s applied inconsistently. Either enforce it properly or let guests fend for themselves, but don’t sit in the middle. Other minor gripes: as others have mentioned, some white swimwear and jewellery did get discoloured. Also, our room was close to the main corridor that runs through the centre of the hotel and noise was occasionally a problem. While inconsiderate guests can’t be accounted for, being woken at 2am by hotel staff using floor-cleaning machinery, or at 7am by leaf blowers outside the rooms, isn’t really acceptable. Some signage asking guests to keep noise down at night might at least show awareness of the issue. The lack of air conditioning in certain communal areas (particularly the buffet restaurant) has been noted by other reviewers too. The open design may make full air con tricky, but it would be worth exploring more effective cooling solutions like additional fans as it gets extremely hot at times. Generally, though, the hotel is well maintained. Communal areas like the lobby, plaza, and poolside look good, even if some of the décor is a little dated compared to newer or more modern-looking neighbouring resorts. Some of the negative reviews seem to expect more than is fair, given the hotel’s price point and star rating. For example, the sargassum seaweed issue did impact the beach, but that’s hardly the hotel’s fault. In fact, staff worked tirelessly under tough conditions to clear it. Yes, the smell can be strong, but you do get used to it after a few days. A special mention must go to the terrific animation team especially Mitchelle, Cesar, Eva, Samira, Allaria and Marysol. They helped make our holiday so enjoyable, with everything from table tennis tournaments and pool games to darts, bingo and even activities at the pool bar during a heavy downpour. Also, a big thank-you to Andrea and Nicolas at the pool bar and Sergio at the lobby bar – really hardworking and friendly staff who helped make the experience even better. All in all, a wonderful holiday at a good, dependable resort in a beautiful location, with everything you need on-site for a relaxing and enjoyable break.

"Maya vs azteca "

6.0

So we figured out Azteca is the family resort, no swim up bar, no beer in pool and not as exciting as the sister resort for adults. You can walk the beach for a 7 minute walk to the sister beach. The algae at the beach is overwhelming and stinks, so we are avoiding using the beach. So we are now paying to go to an excursion swim park. Wish the hotel had a disclaimer. The night life is st the sister resort maya. You can walk streets and find some cool bars and a Starbucks as an alternative route to the other hotel. The swim up bar is slightly underwhelming as compared to ocean riveria.

We are currently staying here and after reading some of the reviews prior to coming, I have to admit we were very apprehensive about the hotel. However after arrival cannot fault it. Food is great and really tasty, plenty of options, staff cannot do enough for you In terms of the seaweed, do your research prior to coming and don’t come to Mexico in sargassum season… the hotel have the tractors out every morning, staff manually scraping the seaweed out of the water with rakes, they are doing what they can. We read about air con prior to coming in reviews and brought electric fans with us to use in buffet/restaurants ect. rooms are cool with air con but I imagine as the hotel is open space air con isn’t a possibility. This is the only down side for us as it is very warm but we are on day 4 and are managing a lot better All in all on our opinion this is a lovely resort we are really enjoying our time here and would definitely stay again

Hotel looks old, old paint on the walls, some dirty. We had a really bad smell of sea weed coming from the air conditioning, issue was reported and we were never notified of any updated, smell went away until water started coming from the ceiling near the ac unit, again the issue was reported and again we were never notified about any repairs done, after that the ac was coming out with a disinfecting like smell, out of the 3 trips to the same area this is the one with the lowest quality, food was great!
