Hilton Garden Inn Chesterton

Courteous friendly staff, relaxing trip

I rented this room to stay overnight so I didn't have to drive over night and early into the morning.

I was hesitant to book after reading some of the other reviews, but other than it needing renovation and smelling like an old hotel, it was fine. I stay in a lot of hotels (Marriott and Hilton) for work as a single female and didn't have any issues or problems.

I tried to book a room there for May 28th; but no one answered the phone. So a site directed me to Hotel.com, so I booked through there (*adding a fee for trip cancellation). They sent me back a confirmation with the wrong date (*for 2 weeks from now), so I tried to correct it, but could not. So I cancelled it. I tried re-booking, but could not - so I called Hilton in Chesterton directly (*explaining I had just cancelled a room booked incorrectly for June 8th through the 9th). They said no problem, we can re-book it. Never did they say there would be two fees. So I stayed there last evening. The wallpaper was peeling in the room; there was no snacks or drinks in the room, but we could sleep. We checked out in the morning today, and tried to grab some coffee on the way out, but the pot in the longe was empty. No one said thank you for staying; nor asked how anything was - but we had places to be, so we left. When we got home, there were 2 (*TWO) charges for rooms, one for the room we cancelled, and one for the room we stayed. I immediately messaged Hotels.Com, who said Hilton had to approve the refund. At first, staff there in Chesterton said ONLY Hotels.Com could process the cancellation, so I was back to them. Again, they said it was on Hilton . . . so I called Hilton customer service, corporate. They said it was up to the individual hotel as to cancellation policy (*which I have since learned is yet another lie), and the staff in Chesterton was refusing to refund the $238 fee for a room that was booked for literally 4 minutes. I asked corporate why both the staff there, and customer service simply lied over & over to me, but got no answer. The hotel was filthy, service was piss-poor, and they were cavalier that they could simply lie over & over to me. I said I was dealing with a Hilton, not a Motel Six, and thought Conrad Hilton would be ashamed that his name was still on their building. NEVER stay there. EVER. Thieves and liars do not make for a good hotel stay.

Very expensive pet fee. Not clear at booking time. I should not stay if aware regarding fee value.

The breakfast was good. Potatoes were excellent and my husbnad loved his fruti bowl and avacado toast.

We would have liked to have had dinner there, but the restaurant was closed on Sunday. The bathrooms on the main level with difficult for one of us to handle with a walker and healing of a broken wrist. It would have been uch more pleasant not to struggle with entering and exiting the bathrooms.

Room smelled like cigarette smoke and no other room was available. luckily, the window opened so I could air the room.

Clean & comfortable!

The exterior door nearest to our room and where we parked didn't grant us access with our room key. This left my handicap Mother standing at the door while I went all the way around the building to the front desk to "update" my room key because I was told that putting it next to my cell phone deactivated it. I tested it when I returned and it still didn't work. The ice machine on our floor didn't work and the lobby store had warm drinks for sale because the cooler they were in wasn't working.

Was there for a wedding. Nice place and we were able to use the bar area for an after reception event which was cool.
