Historic hotel, scheduled for remodel. Room had a few problems

Old, tired, run down, just bad.

Please note my comments are about the Victorian building that was the original Mendocino hotel. Other buildings that are part of the Mendocino Hotel and Garden Suites properties are in better condition. If you choose to stay here, lower your expectations. The restaurant and bar are closed. The main hotel bedrooms use shared bathrooms (not en suite) except for two third-floor bedrooms. Those two" best rooms" on the third floor require climbing very steep narrow stairs (it is a Victorian building after all) have funky plumbing, broken down antiques (not classy as one "genuine" reviewer states) and yes there is an ocean view from a deck that is probably ssfe, but doesn't look like it is. This is possibly the only building in Mendocino where you can rent a single night room; all others that are part of the Mendocino Hotel and Garden Suites require two night stays, as do most of the other hotels and B & B's in the village of Mendocino.

The views were really fantastic and the location was very close to the beach, that being said, nothing about the hotel suggested meriting the price. Two of the four nights I was treated to the loud sound of furniture being dragged along the floor next to me, and every night there was the lovely sound of drunk men shouting at the neighboring dive bar. The room was horribly unclean, those huge stains on the rug should have sent me running. My room was provided with NO full size towels, dainty little washclothes/hand towels only. They can claim shampoo and soap were provided, neither felt remotely adequate to deserve those titles. It's a great location sure, but why did you need to move the furniture so much?

The hotel is historic and old. The room was not in the best condition, but still clean. The bed was comfortable and big. The bar and restaurant was closed, but it is in a great location in downtown Mendocino where there are plenty of other options. It is so easy to walk around and also walk to the beach or on that beautiful trail on the cliffs. I was told that the hotel will be renovated soon. So it might close for a while. It is an amazing place with beautiful gardens but it definitely need renovating. So I look forward to come back after the work is done. But it might be more expensive then!?

Gorgeous town, friendly place

I like its historic value. I was told they are getting ready to renovate and will, eventually re-open the dining and bar.

The room was clean. But the overall property and garden suites are shabby and poorly maintained. Peeling wallpaper, cracked bathroom tile, old paint, mismatched linens. It gives off an air of a ‘once was’ lovely facility. Disappointing that the bar and restaurant are closed in mid summer well past Covid. There’s even a broken window in the main entrance and there is no encouragement to sit in the area and enjoy the hotel at all. For the cost we were very disappointed. However, the two staff I encountered were friendly and polite and the room was quiet. The bedding was very very thin, nothing luxurious about it.

Very cool hotel. We stayed in the garden behind the main building. Large room. Comfortable. Beautiful area with ocean views.

Impressive old-world charm was exactly what drew me to this venue and it did not disappoint! I was there for the Mendocino Music Festival—which was right across the street. Rock-star parking, friendly service, and breathtaking coastal porch-deck, views made for a lovely visit.
