Fable Dunedin

Some good points (location, great old building) but least favourite hotel so far on our NZ trip. Lots of awards on display. Valet parking for a fee. Not told that we should book restaurant. Were told that there were no tables, but we could sit in the Library (amongst said Awards). Very cold & we had to ask to have the table wiped down before eating. Have to say the meal was lovely but my hubby popped into the restaurant area to find vacant tables…..go figure! Hated the room or ‘suite’ in our case. Very very dark décor. Two small uncomfortable chairs & equally uncomfortable chaise lounge. No space to put suitcases. Bedroom very dark & wardrobe access difficult. Bed was comfy. Stained carpets in hallway & lounge areas ugh. Here’s the kicker. As advised by reception on check in we made sure that we left the correct light on to indicate that we wanted the room made up. Back 5+ hrs later after a long tiring day, room not serviced & told bluntly that preference is given to vacated rooms & that they would get to us!! Had to go out again in the rain to let them service the room. Just felt that ‘they’ were trying too hard to present a cool niche hotel rather than on great customer service. Fell short in my view.

Parking was a struggle due to us not been able to stop on the Main Street so parked elsewhere in a car park

Hugely disappointing ... booked a "Classic" room. The room had no window, it was dark even with all the lights on & claustrophobic. Asked to move to a room with a window, which was no problem for the staff. However, to get into that room, you have to shimmy sideways with your suitcase, so that you don't bang into the wardrobe, right in the entrance way. While the room was beautifully appointed, it didn't live up to a 5-star experience. Had to turn the aircon off in order to sleep - it was rattling and wheezing like an old man with a 2 pack a day habit. It wouldn't accommodate 2 people with 2 suitcases

Stylish and comfortable in a great location with lovely staff.

High spec bathroom.

Loud music at night. Small room. Had to lugg my suitcase up the stairs as no lift access on each floor. No parking. Too far out from amenities.

Super comfy bed

Given a tablet for communication with staff. Bedside phone would have been better and safer. Seemed understaffed

Several of the staff were rude, bed was average and pillows were like bricks. There was nowhere to place toiletries or bag more than one towel which always seems strange in a room for two

Great staff, welcoming and knowledgeable! Nicely decorated hotel with history and character, easy walking distance to octagon, shopping street and rail station/attractions. Convenient room service. Fantastic big bath sheet towels!

Stayed in room 202, very small space hard to navigate round bed and use facilities, not comfortablefor 3 night stay. Window didn't close properly, so unfortunately, we had traffic noise from the main road. Disappointed in room offering for 5 stars, no biscuits/sweets for tea/coffee tray, no soap bars, but did provide slippers.

Location is not convenient. There isn’t actually any parking. They will valet park at a cost
