"Nice small hotel"

6.0

We arrived here after 27 hours on the trans Mongolian express so a very comfortable bed and a shower were a god save. The room was clean and comfortable but a bit noisy. Ulaanbaatar has a goodly supply of people who enjoy a drink or two and a lot of them seemed to be outside our window that night. We had dinner in the hotel - eggs with caviar, fish and chips and ice cream which was simple but good. The staff were pleasant and helpful.

"Nice for Ulaanbaatar"

8.0

Rooms were OK. We arrived there as a family after being on the dirty roads for 18 days. So we were just happy for a shower and a cozy bed. Wifi worked. Breakfast was OK. We only spent 1 short night, leaving early for the airport. They organized a taxi for us - friendly staff.

"Great for a 3star in UB!"

6.0

I have no idea what the actual 5 star hotels are like in Ulaan Bataar, but the Edelweiss which was selected by our tour agency as a base in UB was well located and obviously a high standard for a developing country without many western style "luxury" tourist offerings. Edelweiss management and front desk were always welcoming and helpful, the housekeeping was good (maids like others do appreciate a small tip each day), the rooms clean if a bit tired. On my second stay there within a week of whirling around Inner Mongolia, the room stank of cigarettes but they promptly moved me to another. Major building work going on next door and they start early and finish late so it can be noisy. Water pressure variable, but breakfasts good-terrific (seems to depend on occupancy at the hotel any given day, the more guests it seems the better for breakfast spread). We walked most places to and from the hotel, hence my top marks for location. Enjoyed Nomads Mongolian BBQ restaurant downtown, The Verandah and even the Irish Pub. Hotel restaurant ordinary.

"Good small hotel but with no lift (elevator)"

8.0

The room was clean and reasonable sized. The head staff spoke fair english and was helpful. The unexpected free breakfast was good. A good range of food available for dinner. The fish and chips were very good. The wifi worked well. We stayed here prior to a night in a ger. We were dropped back there at 11am as a base before leaving for the station at 7pm. They stored our bags without charge so we could wander round UB in the meantime. Mindful of a previous review I paid the driver for a lift to the station in advance. He was quite happy with that and waved away an additional tip after we were dropped off. So the Edelweiss hotel gave us a good experience. Without a lift to our floor, we made use of the bellboy who cheerfully carried our bags up.

"Good service, great location"

8.0

Solid hotel, clean, dependable wifi. They do a great job with laundry. Good English-style breakfast. Rooms are moderately priced. Same staff at the hotel for many years. Only a few blocks from Chinggis Khan square. I would recommend you consider it. If you want the most modern room in the city, you'll look elsewhere, but I have felt well-served each time I have stayed here.

"Shabby by Western standards, but staff attentive and breakfast great."

6.0

Rated as one of the top inner city hotels by my tour operator. Anything but. Shabby and old. Construction for an additional wing in front, so not a pleasant arrival. Maybe they are planning an extension and a big refurbishment? Chipped furniture and very tired décor. Low voltage lighting made it virtually impossible to read in the room, even with three lamps switched on. Whole socket fell out of the wall when I tried to plug in my phone. TV wouldn't work, but I will say the maintenance man was there in a flash and brought an extension lead so I could have the tall lamp next to the bed, the TV working. All this meant I had to put the kettle on the floor next to my bed to plug it in. Such are the joys of travel. No buffet breakfast because it is the end of the tourist season, but I could order anything I wanted and got an excellent English breakfast (being a little tired of Chinese food at this stage.). I had an accident and cut my hand and the hospital told me I couldn't do my trip to the ger camps inland so I decided to get home quickly. The staff were really kind and helpful and, thank heaven, the WIFI was first class so that I could change all my plans, flights and connections online from the room late at night. (They have Facebook and Google in Mongolia -- yay -- unlike China.) If they refurbish the rooms, I would certainly stay there again, but not if it remains the same and is still punted as "one of the best" by the tour operators.

"Good for a shower at least"

2.0

Stayed here for two nights, one before a trip to stay out with Mongolian Nomads and one on returning from this trip. Rooms quite outdated. The beds could be replaced as I could feel the springs in both of mine (and I am by no means heavy) Shower was very nice, hot water with good pressure. A take away breakfast was provided when asked. Luggage was stored while on trip. Staff had booked taxi for me to a local office I needed to visit and advised the price, when taxi arrived to the destination the price had doubled! Complained to hotel when I returned and just got a shrug of the shoulders! Requested the service of the hotel driver the next day (thinking it would be a fair price) who tried to charge $30usd for a slow 15 minute taxi drive - argued and paid him $20 - still hugely over priced!!! On the last morning asked hotel to book another taxi and confirm price, when taxi arrived I asked that the receptionist to pay the taxi driver my money upfront so as they wouldn't charge extra when arriving at the station - if looks could kill, I wouldn't be writing this review now! If visiting this hotel I would suggest to print a city map so you can walk instead of using such taxis and as this cannot be provided by the hotel - a basic item in hotels and hostels these days you would think ... I would never return here or recommend a stay - look for alternatives!!

"A hotel that will leave you with a bad impression of the country and its people"

2.0

I could give you the long story of my experience with not just this hotel but Mongolia in general. I will however save you that for another day. All I can say is that apart from a reasonable room in this hotel, all you will meet here is staff that will try their best to rip you off! From deliberately checking us into a single room charging us for a double room to making the hotel driver overcharging a short drive to the bus station at 6 times the "normal" price, all set up by the receptionist. No information or city map available in the hotel. Finalised by the receptionist turning angry when asking her to pre-pay our last taxi in order not to get ripped-off! Good luck!

"Watch out for exploding light bulbs!"

6.0

The rooms are clean, and the cleaning staff are probably the best part of the hotel! On arrival, despite having booked a double room, we were given singles, and the cleaning lady moved us herself to a double room, and cleaned it straight away for us! How good is that? This hotel really needs some good maintenance. Whilst in the room, the light bulb in the passage way just outside the bathroom exploded right above me when I turned the light on. Apart from the almighty bang, there was glass EVERYWHERE, and smoke following a flash of light. We immediately rang reception who totally did not understand the severity of what had just occurred. Once again the cleaning lady to the rescue! She was first on the scene, cleaned thoroughly all the shattered glass and steel bits lying around, and despite speaking NO English, seemed at least concerned for my welfare. Not so the other staff. Not once did reception seek to find out if I was hurt (luckily not, just a bit deaf from the bang) and then only sent an electrician up when we reported that we had NO power in the room. They thought it would be solved by changing the light bulb! If I could recall what room we were in, I would say avoid it like the plague, as it will happen again. I've given 3 stars for service, ONLY because of the cleaners.....
