"Good place to stay in downtown San Diego"

Modern hotel in downtown San Diego. We stayed there because of the proximity to Amtrak station. Staff very friendly and professional. Comfortable beds.

Look, I'm not usually one to write scathing reviews but Hotel Republic really left a sour taste in my mouth. Let me walk you through what happened because honestly, I'm still trying to process it. So I'm in town for CRSSED and book Hotel Republic - seemed decent enough from the photos and reviews. The night before check-in, I reach out asking to cancel my reservation. Pretty clear request, right? Instead of just processing the cancellation, they send me this follow-up asking if I want to cancel. Which... wait, what? I literally just told them I wanted to cancel. Why are they asking me again if I want to cancel when that's exactly what I requested? I don't see their message until the next day and when I do respond, I'm honestly a bit frustrated by the circular logic here. I mention that their handling of this could be disputed with the attorney general - just a factual statement about how businesses should handle cancellation requests properly. Here's where it gets completely inappropriate. Instead of just processing the cancellation I asked for TWICE now, they accuse me of being "aggressive" in my communication. I went back and reread my messages because maybe I missed something? Nope. I was straightforward and factual. Apparently mentioning basic consumer protection laws when a business isn't handling a simple request properly is now considered hostile behavior at Hotel Republic. The whole interaction left me genuinely uncomfortable about staying there. Like, I ask to cancel, they ask me if I want to cancel (???), and when I point out that this kind of runaround could be problematic from a consumer rights perspective, suddenly I'M the aggressor? If this is how they respond to guests who know their rights and expect basic competency, what does that say about their business practices? 1/5 stars. Hotel Republic can't even process a straightforward cancellation request without making it weird and defensive. The fact that they got accusatory when called out on their poor handling tells you everything you need to know.
