Kyoto Machiya Zeniyacho

Historic, authentic Japanese inn- very relaxing with the en suite bathtubs and we really enjoyed the matcha tea ceremony at check-in! Convenient to the trains and buses although not in the historic district of Kyoto.

I loved the property. The hospitality from the staff member was exceptional.

The baths were incredible. It was in a great location and the staff was lovely.

The futon upstairs was a little uncomfortable but other than that everything was great!

The house was vey clean and the bedding very comfortable. The property is on a quiet street so there was no noise. The house exudes a zen-like atmosphere and using both the inside and outside baths was truely an amazing experience. Just what we were looking for! The concierge who checked us into the property was super helpful and went out of her way to arrange a private car pickup at a more amenable location.

The machiya is quite old( as can be expected from a historic property) and there is some visible water damage on the walls of the main bedroom. The only real downside to our stay was that the street the machiya is located on is so narrow, that taxis/cars can not reach it. Thus we had to walk from a main street about 4 minutes away to do anything outside of the property. No big deal if its a sunny day and you are not carrying anything, but if you have to carry your luggage or groceries and it is raining, that make for an unexpected inconvenience.

Absolutely amazing

We loved the experience of staying in a traditional Japanese townhome. The authenticity and the bathtubs, both indoor and out, were very fun to experience. The location was fabulous as well, lots within walking distance. We also appreciated the tea ceremony at check in!

I wish that they either taught us how to use the coffee or had a proper machine to use, that was such a struggle every morning. I also wish that they offered a basic western breakfast option in addition to the Japanese option. Even if just danishes and fruit, that would have been a nice option to have every other day.

2 bedded rooms and microwave to heat up food. Quite near to Gojo station.

The corridor area seems colder than the rest of the room without heater. The tap water also seems to take longer to warm up especially you need it during cold weather.

This was such a lovely break in the middle of our trip. The check in process was so thoughtful. Loved using both the indoor and outdoor baths. Highly recommend.
