Tomonoura Shiomachi Hotel Roya

The property was great. The room we stayed in was in a renovated traditional old building, and was very comfortable. Facilities were clean and new. Bath was big and nice, which also was half open-air to our own small courtyard. Meals were very nice and tasty. Neighborhood is a quiet and beautiful fishing village. Parking was easy which is right in front of the property. Staff were super friendly and helpful. It was raining heavily when we arrived at the sister hotel where we were supposed to check-in from. Staff there were helpful and get us seated in the lobby and then arrange another staff to lead us to where we would actually stay. We felt well taken care of since the first moment. Very nice experience.

The in-room bath is very nice. However as it is not as straight forward as open and closing a tap, it would be better to have better instructions or user manual for it.

What a special experience! This is a glimpse of history with modern amenities and thoughtful staff. We had a triple room, which worked well for us as the sliding screens separated two sleeping areas. Breakfast was beautifully presented and delicious. Dinner options are very limited in the area, so consider reserving dinner at this property.

Dreamy location and view on the port. Amazing staff very kind and helpful. The room and house it was located in was absolutely beautiful and very authentic. We didn’t want to leave !

Room was nice, hotel itself didn’t feel like a hotel rather more like a extension of “ sister hotel” Ofutei where you would initially check in. Very odd arrangement as Shiomachi hotel at no stage felt to me like actual hotel. Staff tried their best.

As per my earlier comments, never felt like I stayed at actual hotel rather, was just given a room and keys to it. No one spoke english,Tomonoura was a complete ghost town during my visit and to be perfectly honest it’s not a place to stay overnight. Even staff mentioned to me “ Japanese people don’t view Tomo as a touristy place “., so why would anyone stay :)? Day trip at best.. only place during my month long Japan trip felt like complete waste of time.

We stayed in a lovely restored Japanese house with comfortable Western style beds and a large living area, kitchen, bathroom with cedar bath and shower facilities, and sunny indoor veranda. An offshoot of the nearby Shiomachi Hotel. You check in at the Ofutei then they transfer you (2 mins by car) to the new site. Incredible attentive and professional service (for two days) from staff member Watakabe, the best service we’ve had in 6 weeks in Japan. Mito also very professional and helpful. Thank you both! Super comfy beds, lots of hot water, spotless accommodation. Heating in bathroom and loo not great but rest of house very warm (v cold weather when we were there). Breakfast served next door was stunning. Tomonoura is a fascinating little fishing village with a pretty front and some lovely historic houses, temples and streets. The edge of town is quite run down and industrial, but it seems to be making an effort to rebuild itself and has some excellent restaurants (Yuki’s Place, Otebi) and bakeries (next to the lighthouse). The hotel runs a useful shuttle bus to and from Fukuyama Station and is very good at communication.

Heating and light issues but very minor and probably due to cold weather. House is historical in style but in brand-new, excellent condition.
