We loved our stay. The property shares facilities with Sofitel Winter Palace, so you’re welcomed by lush gardens and even flamingos roaming around. The location couldn’t be more perfect, Luxor Temple is literally across the road (highly recommend visiting at night when it’s beautifully lit). You can also walk to the Luxor Souk for bargain souvenirs, and just opposite the main road there are plenty of great restaurants for evening strolls. The rooms are classy and comfortable, true to a 5‑star experience. Most of all, thank you to the wonderful staff who made our stay so memorable.

The check in counter could take more time during busy period.

"Five Star Service and Gardens - shabby round the edges"

8.0

I couldn't decide between 4 and 5 stars so here's why it could be 5 and then why 4 5* : -has flamingoes wandering around the gardens! How could that not merit five full stars? - the gardens - so peaceful and relaxing - a haven from the noise and dust outside - the staff - friendly and impeccable service - the location - right next to Luxor Temple and the Corniche - the history - faded grandeur - how romantic. Pretend you are starring in Death on the Nile 4* : - faded grandeur = flaky paintwork, aging furniture, everything needs a bit of a jetwash and/or lick of paint - breakfast - fine but not lavish (although they did make me falafel on request so that should be a 5* really!) - noise from the traffic outside - family hotel so children making noise inside (bit unfair to mark down for that!) - pool - needs a bit of a clean as well -bathroom - others have posted photos already but what on earth is going on with the position of the shower screen? -plugs - you need an adapter and they are very weirdly situated in inconvenient places - price point - I paid pretty much the same as for other Luxor hotels of a far higher overall standard ... but without the gardens. For you to decide which you value more. I did love the atmosphere here and would recommend it overall. It's due a refurb that's all.

"The reception staff are rude, and the rooms are very poorly maintained"

4.0

The reception staff in the Pavilion section are very inattentive, and I don’t think they are friendly at all. I especially cannot say many positive things about the female employee named Alaa. The pool staff are extremely friendly. The restaurant staff in the old part of the hotel are also very polite. We stayed in the Pavilion section, and I can say that the room is incredibly old. The bathroom overflows with water, and the hair dryer looks like it’s from ancient Egypt. If you are planning to visit and you have long hair, I definitely recommend bringing your own hair dryer. The rooms are truly very old, so don’t expect a high level of comfort. After finishing your sightseeing in the morning, the pool area is very pleasant in the afternoon — it’s quiet and peaceful, and you can read your book, eat, and drink something. The hotel garden is very enjoyable and is cleaned daily by the staff. Overall, I believe the reception staff (Pavilion section) harm the reputation of the Sofitel brand.

"Good location, average and old rooms, terrible service"

4.0

We stayed at the Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor during our holiday in Egypt. Having read the reviews on Tripadvisor, we booked rooms at the Winter Pavillion. We'd booked two rooms and as I am a Diamond ALL member, one of the rooms was upgraded to a suite. The location of the hotel on the bank of the river is quite convenient. There are plenty of travel agents and a bank to exchange money to the left of the hotel. Across the hotel, along the promenade are a variety of restaurants (surprisingly, a few restaurants have the exact same menu leading us to think that there is perhaps a central kitchen) as well as the requisite overpriced with questionable quality souvenir shops. On the right of the hotel is a market area about 5 minutes away. There is McDonalds and some more restaurants as well as shopping (including gold pendants) and small convenience stores where the prices are unmarked on the products and depend on the shopkeeper's assessment of your ability to pay. If you want to pick up some local beers, there is a store in the market. Note that you will be accompanied and offered multiple services every single step of your walk but while it does not get aggressive, it is extremely persistent and annoying. The hotel itself has two sections, the original building and the Winter Pavillion. The original building is worth a visit for the atmosphere but not where I'd stay. The Winter Pavillion is a bit more modern and I emphasize a bit. The grounds of the hotel are lovely to walk through and we saw flamingos. The rooms in the Winter Pavillion are decently sized but old. The TVs are small and are the very old LCD type. The bathrooms are average. Fortunately, there is a bidet. The shower area is extremely old fashioned. The bathtub has been repurposed into a shower area with absolutely no paneling on the side. The result, every shower leads to a pool of water outside the tub, which is a huge safety hazard due to the risk of slipping on the tiles. We had the housekeeping staff install shower curtains in both the bathrooms. The rooms again due to their age, do not have multi plug sockets and you will need to request an adaptor using the show and tell method. The rooms also do not have heating, and the air conditioning controls are a placebo in that they are controlled centrally. In December, it means either switching off the air condition and getting stuffy or double blankets. The staff offered a heater but looking at the age of the hotel and the equipment, we did not feel it would be a safe option. We had breakfast every day at the restaurant next to the Winter Pavillion. The variety was average, but the quality was very mediocre. For instance, a decaf latte was hot milk with two sachets of Nescafe decaf powder. The preserves, the bread selection etc were very average in type and quality. The fresh fruits and hummus were great though. There was a live egg/waffle/crepe station and the omelets were decent, however the hygiene was a bit suspect. Whenever the staff left the station, the birds would make a feast of the condiments as very often the staff forgot to cover them. What makes this hotel not worthy of the Sofitel brand name is the dismal quality of the service. The front desk staff are perpetually disinterested and or they do not follow simple questions. It took us forever to check out as the desk staff were unable to operate the credit card machine correctly. The worst service was at the restaurant where we had breakfast every morning. With the exception of the gentleman at the egg station and the one who served coffee, every single staff member had a perpetually sullen look and were extremely curt while speaking. This made for a rather irritating start of the day. They did brighten up considerably to specific nationalities. In summary, average rooms, good location, terrible service but with the extremely limited options of global hotels in Luxor, we didn't have too many options.
