Hotel El Refugio de Juanar

This is a splendidly isolated hotel, at the end of a winding mountain road, 5km from the main highway running north from of Marbella. Apparently it's a converted hunting lodge, and certainly it's surrounded by mountains with hiking trails and viewpoints. The little gift shop in the lobby had good hiking maps, including several recommended routes. The staff are friendly, and have enough English between them to cope with hopelessly monoglot visitors such as ourselves. The food is good.

We enjoyed the hotel and situation although initially surprised as in the middle of nowhere. On reflection very pleasant surroundings and nice atmosphere.

Das Hotel liegt sehr ruhig, von der Landstraße fährt man 5 km auf einer schmale Straße in die Berge. Die Zimmer sind einfach, aber geschmackvoll dekoriert. Ein schöner Pool lädt zum Schwimmen ein.

We have stayed at the juanar twice now, one in June and recently in March. Both times the hotel was almost empty but the member of staff who seemed to do reception, bar work and served us breakfast and dinner, made us very welcome. We stayed on a half board basis and couldn't manage to eat all the delicious food we were served in the evening. Breakfast very basic and Spanish but that was fine by us. It is a nice change to stay somewhere with character. It is a dream location for walkers, and very peaceful at night. Only niggle this time, maybe because we were the only residents, was that the hotel public areas were cold as there was no heating on. A wood fire was lit at night where we ate in the bar are as the restaurant was closed up. Also the pool area which we used on both visits and had all to ourselves, could do with sprucing up

Very nice hotel, very quiet, with lovely localisation (hills and forest, perfect for trekking), very nice staff. But the description is false: There was no AC in the room (but it was still comfortably cold) and the breakfast was not a continental one. Every day it look exactly the same way: coffee/tea/colacao, 2 toasts, some jam, churros (with chocolate if requested), fresh orange juice and a cake, everything served to the table. It was nice, but after 4 days I had enough of this amount of sugar and dreamed about some ham and cheese.

Very disappointed. We were told that there was a balcony and it was only a window box! We booked for our anniversary and didn't get what was described. Bathroom was very basic and no bathrobes! No air conditioning although it said climate control. Long way to another town so no other restaurant near so had to use the one in hotel , road was a rather windy mountain road. Unless you like walking or cycling it is not suitable .

Ha sido un fin de semana fantastico, a pesar de la habitación . Con una pequeña reforma y un poquito de gusto en la elección de telas de colchas y cortinas y sobre todo el color de las paredes la habitación ganaría muchísimo y estaría en consonancia con los alrededores del hotel que son fabulosos
