Ventozelo Hotel & Quinta

My wife and I chose Quinta de Ventozelo for two days of our anniversary trip to Portugal and it exceeded every expectation. We weren't prepared for how breathtakingly beautiful the Douro Valley would be, and this hotel made the experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff welcomed us with warmth, kindness and humor. Their hospitality was great. We were fortunate enough to stay in the Casa de Romantica room - private and, well, romantic. We got a complimentary small bottle of port. Not a bad start. The staff arranged a nice boat ride for us on the Douro. We had perfect weather to enjoy the entire stay including the great swimming pool. We wish we had stayed an extra day. I honestly believe there is no better view/location amongst all the options. This was hands down the highlight of our entire Portugal trip.

Room was smaller then we expected, There were also quite a lot of flies in the area, which made the stay less comfortable. In addition, it was quite noisy during the day because of the gardener working outside.

We booked the Picnic by the Douro River experience. (fareharbor.com/embeds/book/quintadeventozelo/items). Our group of 3 couples made our way down a road through the vines to the picnic which was already set up in a private pavilion by the river when we arrived, and after we were greeted by Ventozelo staff we were left entirely alone. The picnic style food was delicious and very plentiful (more than what we needed actually). Also provided was an assortment of wine (white & rose), port, water, and coffee. Nice, clean restroom facilities are located close enough to the pavilion for convenience. There are also comfortable chairs overlooking the river, which we used after our meal to watch the boat cruises slowly pass by on the river while sipping a glass of wine. A dock is very close so arriving by boat is possible, and the dock includes a ladder in the event that picnic guests want to have a swim in the river. Our 2.5 hour picnic experience was very peaceful and relaxing - definitely more rustic and natural than what is provided in the meticulously manicured environment closer to the Quinta. If a few flying insects aren't your thing than this is probably not for you, but for us the positives far outweighed that minor nuisance. One suggestion for improvement would be some pretty landscaping around the pavilion. Great for group fun or a romantic lunch for couples, we would do this picnic again in a heartbeat.
