"A quiet mountain hut."

10.0

One of our best stays in Taiwan. A nice house, quite high up the hill, a bit on a side of main touristic route. Since the season was low, it was quiet and very comfortable. Wooden floors and spacious rooms give it a nice atmosphere. We decided to replace breakfast for 7-11 coupons, as we wanted to leave early. No problem to communicate to the stuff and you could pay with a card! You can see some nice views on the way to this place. Good value for money!

Our rooms' windows faced water containers with some pumps, so not only no view, but also constant noise from them. But this would be a problem only if you wanted to sleep with windows open, which rarely happens in Taiwan.

"3 story hostel between Shizhuo and Fenqihu"

7.0

The room was large and had a heater. There is a large well equipped kitchen to cook in downstairs.

It was hard to find with very little signs, none in English. It was empty of staff most of the time. We couldn’t check in early as the floors had been mopped and needed to dry.

"We would recommend it to everybody"

10.0

The people from Chia Yuen were so incredible friendly. They helped us with our planning, suggesting the walks and where to go. They provided an amazing tea tasting and brought us back and forth to the bus stations.

"Quiet location at tea farm, central to all walking trails and sunset spots, with helpful staff"

9.0

HOTEL/ROOM: Spotless hotel, clean room & bathroom. Beds very comfortable. Wifi was great. LOCATION: Set in a quiet family-run complex with beautiful views of mountains and local tea fields, 10min walk to gorgeous sunset spots, surrounding by all the great walking trails in the area. Not really walkable to town (unless you like 40min hikes uphill, mostly along a road) but this isn’t an issue. Mr Huang was extremely helpful to drive us into town (and even once a pickup in Fenqihu – avoiding specific busy traffic hours). He was very responsive to all requests (via Whatsapp, in Mandarin – use Google Translate). FOOD: Breakfast tea and hot brekky sandwich is delicious and delivered on time every morning to communal lobby table. Dinner options include individual hot pots next door (order 30min ahead) – note its an enormous quantity (NTD 400 / 450 depending on broth). Two doors down is a small outdoor-only seating restaurant with a small set of further options, good prices and lovely service.

Not much wrong! None of the staff in the complex spoke any English, but all happily used Google Translate. Some minor suggestions to take it to the 'next level': Be clearer at checkin with food options available (e.g. we learned of hot pot option by seeing people eating it and asking); add some hooks to the bathroom; add a bedside reading lamp. Add some more comfortable seating (couch, coffee tables, etc) and softer lighting to improve ambiance of communal area downstairs.
