The Nomad Motel - International Falls, MN - Near Canadian Border

Rooms appeared nice and clean. Location.

Beds were frankly awful. They looked great, but were incredibly soft. Room was a bit damp. I didn't like the automated check in system. As I have an international number, I could not receive the text to get access code to get the key, so required me calling, being on hold, then giving a different number. Check in is at 3pm, but the rooms are sometimes available earlier if already cleaned and thus the key was accessible however somehow it is not registered in their system that I have accessed the key so staff still enter the rooms after you have the key. Upon checkout, there is a big screen in lobby (not really a lobby but a room with automated key dispenser) that very clearly says to put key on bedside table and close door behind you. I had assumed the process would be to put the key back into the auto key dispenser. Next day I got a precharge of $100 for lost key! I called and was told key was not found. I explained exactly where it was and that I followed the instructions. Also the number I was given to call was in Ontario and my phone plan would not let me call Canada, so I had to use another person's phone. Was told I would be charged $375 if the key was not found the next day. I had no recourse--just my word against theirs. Very frustrating. Key was eventually found; it had been knocked off the bedside table (where instructions on screen in lobby told me to put it), when sheets were being changed and was found behind a bed. So all worked out in the end, but clearly this is a flawed process.

It is not 5 star. For the area it was quite good. Very clean. Old motel so bathroom was small but adequate.

I had not received a text prior from the hotel regarding contactless check-in but I was easily able to contact someone for help. She was very helpful and apologetic for any inconvenience.

It was clean and furnished in a utilitarian style. We disliked the robotic check-in with no welcome. Upon calling the help number and leaving a message inquiring of the wifi password, my call was returned by a man identifying himself as the "owner." After providing the password, he inquired about my impression of the automated check-in, something that I stated I did no like, that it was robotic and impersonal, and there was no opportunity to ask questions or get extra assistance. Before I could finish, he rudely interrupted by talking over me, and stated that I "rude," even though I was responding to HIS question. He quickly escalated his comments to an attack on me personally and wouldn't allow me ot respond. During this, he stated that he would "refund (my) money" and that I was free to seek other lodging," all this because I responded to the question he asked. Realizing that it would have been inconvenient to move after bringing our belongings into the room, and that there may not be other rooms available, I informed him that I would hang up if he continued his abusive remarks. It's doubtful that he even heard me over his own infantile screaming. I wasn't about to allow myself to be subjected to further abuse and I promptly hung up. I wouldn't recommend that you consider subjecting yourself to the possibility of similar abuse. Consider patronizing another lodging facility not far away in the same price range that serves breakfast where you'll be greeted by a real person.

No people check in was interesting but easy

Stop over to our fishing trip.. VERY CLEAN

Motel was clean and comfortable. Great location for my visit to Voyageurs.
