I recently stayed at the Riviera Hotel for two nights and was incredibly underwhelmed. While the hotel is technically clean, it is extremely dated and lacks the basic comforts you would expect from a 4-star establishment. The Room & Comfort: The furniture and carpets feel dingy and "tired." Most importantly, the beds were very uncomfortable, making it difficult to get a restful night's sleep. The room was lacking basic amenities—there weren't even tissues provided. I also encountered a major issue with the electrical outlets: none of them worked correctly. I actually had to unplug a lamp in an already dimly lit room just to charge my phone. Dining: The food was another major low point. The buffet was severely lacking; for a hotel in Portugal, where fresh produce is abundant, it was shocking to see they relied almost entirely on canned and frozen foods in the fruit and breakfast sections. Service: The staff were noticeably unfriendly. Instead of feeling welcomed, I felt like they were doing me a favor just by checking me in or answering a question. There is a total lack of genuine hospitality here. The "4-Star" Rating: I can only assume the hotel maintains its 4-star status due to the presence of the pool and the adjacent shopping area, because the rooms, food, and service certainly don't earn it. Having a pool doesn't make up for a lack of basic room functionality and poor quality food.
